NSW Seniors 5% WISH Cards - Working for Everybody?

Tl;dr do they work? Or did I stuff something up?

The wife, our three children and I were at Big W today. In an effort to make my scrimping a little less disruptive I scanned items into the Big W app as we went to keep a total.

When we were done and on our way to the registers I hopped onto the NSW Seniors WISH card portal using my Dad's details to login, to purchase a 5% off card equal to the value of our transaction ($86). This would be the first time I have attempted to do this.

I selected Everyday Wish, selected "buy as a gift", them filled in the details and added to cart. It was at this point that we got to the checkout and the family got loud and annoyed, so I just went as fast as I could to complete the transaction. I don't remember any details of what happened next - four voices talking to you simultaneously will do that.

When I went into my bank account after we were away from checkout, the full $86 face value of the gift card had been deducted from my card.

What has gone wrong here? Do they check the Biller Details (I used mine, not my Dad's) against the NSW Seniors details during checkout? It's the only thing I can think of, as I've gone through checkout again (just not paid) and it shows the correct amount under the pay button once you've entered your card details.

Or have I unwittingly made an error in the rush to get it done prior to checkout?

(Obviously I can't just complain, as I'm using my Dad's NSW Seniors details.)

  • The discount is off the purchase price of the gift card.

The digital gift card is emailed and I add it to my Rewards app.

At the checkout, the full price of the purchases is deducted.

    It's always worked for me.

    • Yes, of course.

To clarify - face value was $86. Value debited from bank should be $81.70.

Instead, $86 was deducted from my bank account, and I was given a $86 gift card.

EDIT - So it seems I've stuffed something up somehow. I'd love to know how so it doesn't happen next time…

      • Does that $86 gift card shows up on the senior card woolies account under my orders?

If not, the maybe you times out the login and purchased as guest?

  • There are 2 ways that I use the web site.
    1. Decide on the amount that I want to spend from my CC, prepaid card, etc. Say $150. Divide it by 95, and multiply by 100 = $157.89 GC for a $150 transaction cost.
    OR
    2. If I wanted a GC for $86, I'd divide 86 by 100 and multiple by 95 = a $81.70 transaction cost.
Before I hit pay I always check the actual transaction cost that I am going to pay.
Not something that I would want to do on the spot.

    • Yeah it was the checking that I didn't do. I agree, next time I'll be buying in advance.

The promo code is automatically applied after logging in, maybe you accidentally unchecked the promo code.

    • Aha! This must have been it. Damn, such a simple thing to miss!

You can't uncheck the promo code. AT least I can't when I tried.

so your attempt at rorting the system backfired, that's good

When you buy the card it is sent to your email, not instantly, but soon. I have to print mine out because when I tried keying in the number at Big W it didnt fit.I just print it at officeworks and put it in a plastic clear see through folder

    • Foolscap no doubt?

    • There are two sets of numbers - a long one for online and a shorter one for instore

    • They scan your giftcard barcode these days . You don’t punch in anymore.

When you open gift card email, there is a link to add that straight to your rewards app directly.

From buying gift card to spending it, I just have to punch in the PIN

Can't help you but my suggestion would be don't stress over buying it on the spot and having the risk of getting it wrong under all that stress. I assume you're doing this so you can spend the exact amount but the reality is, since it's a wish giftcard I'm sure you'll be back in woolies within the next week

    • I like standing at the self serve clicking the 'yes I wish to continue' whilst waiting for my e-gift card to arrive. Nothing more exciting than seeing your invoice come through, knowing the gift card will shortly follow.. ahh shopping in 2024, so complicated.

  • To update: I have since successfully checked out with the 5% discount, and I still have no idea what happened.
