  • You'd be buying rubbish at this price.

    • Presumably, but I don't see the catch myself. The A13 is an ARM core so it shouldn't have the compatibility problems of the MIPS CPUs. It should support FullHD playback and the youtube link from kiwipride seems to show the screen as being responsive (though the video could be misleading).

  • Not bad for $54. How long for delivery?

    For the 7" model:

    • The site says 1.5 GHz in the title, 1.2GHz in the description and you have it listed here as 1.0 GHz
    • What does "apply Android 4.0 system mean?" Does it come natively with ICS?
    • Battery Life: 2~5 Hours

This tablet will only end in frustration, poor buying in anyone's books. I have not negged as it may be useful for a project but not as a full time tablet.

I understand that the A13 is rated for 1 to 1.2GHz but can be run at 1.5GHz if you want a lap warmer. This seems to me that this would be the first ~$50 tablet that is usable for those who spend their days next to a powerpoint. So, I'll give a plus despite it's limitations.

  • For $54 cheaper than a lot ereader and also cheaper than the Kmart $99 tablet.

But I will prefer to pay a bit more for the Ainol Crystal.

Tablets and e-readers aren't really comparable, except in devices like the Kindle Fire which try to be both.

But I will prefer to pay a bit more for the Ainol Crystal.

      I'm with you there.

  • I am looking for a cheap tablet just for me to read ebooks. Is this good enough? Please advise.

If you want an e-book reader, buy an e-book reader. While a tablet can be used to read e-books, it falls short in a few ways:

e-readers use e-ink displays that are reflective and are actually easier to read in bright light.

      e-readers are generally lighter.

e-ink displays take very little current so battery life is long.

e-readers have dedicated buttons for flipping pages, going to the TOC, etc. that make the experience smoother

You may have to get additional software to read some formats on a tablet. On an e-reader it's built-in.

        Agreed,

There are three advantages of cheap tablet however:
        1) Tablets tend to be robust. You really don't want to sit on a Kindle.
        2) Tablets support more book formats, for example you can load both the Kobo and Kindle app on the tablet. (And video books too if you really want)
        3) When you decide you hate the tablet, and you see a good deal on a real e-book reader on OzBargain, you can re-purpose the tablet as a cheap electronic photo frame or such like.
