Teclast P85T (8", 4GB/64GB, Android 14, Widevine L1) US$47.56 (~A$73.08) Shipped @ Factory Direct Collected AliExpress

On sale is this budget tablet from Teclast that's decent for a tad over A$70. Obviously this is no Lenovo Xiaoxin but if you're wanting to do the very basics like watching YouTube, general browsing, basic gaming or even use as something like a Home Assistant dashboard this will do.

Features include Android 14 with Google Play, 8" 1280x800 IPS display, 4GB RAM (+6GB virtual RAM), 64GB storage (microSD support), Allwinner A523 octa-core CPU, ARM Mali-G57 GPU, 5000mAh battery with USB-C, 2MP rear + 0.5MP front cameras, dual speakers, 3.5mm audio, WiFi, Bluetooth 5.2 and Widevine L1.

While this tablet does feature Widevine L1 DRM, Netflix HD may not work. I own this tablet myself and the downsides are that the screen brightness isn't the best, no GPS and it's not the fastest tablet out there. You get what you pay for!

It's important to note there are two versions of this tablet. An Android 13 and an Android 14 version - I received the Android 14 version.

As for unethical advice for a cheaper price. You may get a partial refund if you do a dispute as the page says "8GB RAM" when it reality it's 4GB (10GB with virtual RAM).

    • Thanks for the “tips”.
Have been looking for an “ipad mini” size android tablet for a Home Assistant wall mount display - this might do the trick.
Just to confirm, it’s full android, and not the gimped version? And is there any way to ensure you receive a 14 version (all the pictures in the ad show 13)?

I didn't know there was a cut down version of Android 14 and looks to be the full version with the mini app taskbar and everything. The listing says it's the 2023 version and that's the Android 14 one. Still a bit of a gamble and my order a month ago was Android 14.

Sigh tempting price for a second Hass dashboard….

  • How long would the battery last as HA dashboard running without AC do you think? I don't have power where I want to place it but was thinking of rotating it with a second one (while one is in use, the other one is charging)

my iPlay 50 Mini doesnt last 24 hours (been testing it as I am waiting for my step down converter) and thats using external motion sensor to turn on and off the screen. Though it does have smaller battery and better screen which I assume drains it more.

Thanks, exactly the feedback I'm looking for. I have a few old ipads I'm going also try…

  • How does Minecraft go on this?

Playable. I had a tiny bit of stuttering.

    • CODM is the real question….

  • was gonna grab this to replace an ageing SM-T385L, doesn't seem like much of an upgrade screen wise though.

  • How would this go as a kids device, used almost entirely for youtube and roblox? Occasionally stolen by mum & dad to follow online recipes while cooking :)
Worth stepping up to something like the M50 Pro for $150?

    • The 3d games will be a bit more of a struggle.

  • How bad is non HD Netflix for these tablets that can't do it?

    • It's bog standard…. definition.

    • About 480p assuming Netflix will be in SD. The display is only 720p so it's not a massive downgrade.
