Zap Fitness Australia - Charges Quarterly Administration Fee?

Hey everyone, was thinking of joining my local zap fitness.

On their website before you sign up, they state they charge a quarterly account service fee as well as their joining fee.

I've never seen a gym charge quarterly for admin and accounts maintenance, sounds so bogus. Has anyone seen this or challenged this before?

It's a $4.99 fee quarterly, which might seem small. But it's the principal!

Yeah some gyms charge this. I know world gym does.

  • Maybe.. join another gym?
Or see if can negotiate a sign up with modified terms (was previously at jetts then good life and both times negotiated the sales person down to my ideal fortnight price, no admin fee no card fee etc)

    • Yes, will be going elsewhere. That current gym is just super convenient in terms of location and parking and is also within a nice jogging distance. I have tried to visit the branch several times but its not staffed 24/7

My gym transitioned from Jet Fitness to Zap Fitness (a number of Jet gyms transitioned to Zap throughout Vic). They do not charge any quarterly fees. I am not sure if this is because I am still on grandfather Jet Fitness plan. However my gym has $9.99/week no joining fees displayed outside the gym. Pretty sure if you talk to the customer service on phone (and tell them you getting a better offer from another gym), they will waive the joining fee and admin fee. Give it a try.

    • Thank you, waiting to see if I can catch anyone F2F.

I bet you could negotiate a $19.96 yearly discount to make up for it.

Just have a read of their membership terms and conditions and you wouldn't consider Zap. They are a bogus scummy company run to loot their members and many terms on their membership agreement would be borderline illegal. Unfortunately most of the gyms in aus are similar to zap. But there are good ones as well. Just need to find them out depending on your area.

Yeah, go for it to "Make Zap great again!" K. Marx says, 'If there are not enough volunteer ids, capitalism cannot survive'. You are paying for theirs OK pills and condoms. Good luck!

    You mean the principle?

They're a private business and can charge you whatever they want. If you're not happy with the price, try another gym.

    • Of course, they can charge whatever they want, like I can question certain prices whenever I want. The post is also to highlight what they do so people can make better informed decisions before signing up. Is that ok with you boss, or do I need your approval?

  • a lot of gyms charge you leaving fee too.

Hence why i haven't looked at joinining gyms will save up, and build own gym at home (i.e. if i manage to get a big home 😂)

  • Oh yay, more USA style 'hide the total price with fees and add ons' stuff. I hate it. The price you see should be the price you pay and be inclusive of all costs the business wants you to pay.

    • The reason was bogus too - It's to do routine admin work on your file. WTF could they be doing to my file that would justify the cost

  • But it's the principal!

If that's the case, I don't think you're going to be joining any gym haha. Whoever writes these gym contracts has done their best to try and tack on every single charge they can think of.

  • Thanks all - I have sent an email to them to see what they can do. It is one of those gyms where staff are nonexistent (I have tried to go in to speak to a person several times)
So far over the phone they tell me the fee is to do regular account management - wtf does that even mean lol

    • It means nothing. They should do 'routine maintenance on the file' as part of the overall gym fee.

Stupid thing is, if they bumped up the regular fee by twice the admin fee noone would bat an eye.
