Is Chicken Wire Enclosure Safe for Cats

Hi, l bought a pet enclosure 3 by 3 meters wide and 2 meters high, it has steel chicken wire netting as its walls. l am worried my cat might try to climb the chicken wire netting walls and hurt its paws or claws.

Should l replace the steel wire netting with nylon netting, would nylon netting be safer for my cat then steel netting or is the steel chicken wire netting nothing to worry about?

They are best used for chickens

Why did you give up on this idea?

Just put a dog on the other side of the enclosure, the cat won't want to escape.

  • I'm still more worried about your plan to leave them outside most of the time.

Nylon seems more likely to cut them than chicken wire, no? Depends how thick the chicken wire is though. But they will try climb it and quickly figure out whether it hurts them, just sit with them the first few hours to see if anything goes wrong.

no my plan will be to keep the cats indoors most of the time and outdoors in the enclosure a few hours a day for sunlight , so you think theres no risk of any serious injury to their paws if they try to climb the chicken wire

  • How about a huge fish tank made of glass? No chance of claw issues.

    • How much would a 3 meter by 3 and 2 meter high glass fish tank cost, thousands , no thanks

      • Perspex wouldn't cost that much.

      • 3m ply is cheap.

      • Your cats would cost more, no thanks

  • If it keeps a fox out…

  • 240volts through the wire will keep them off it. /sarcasm tag

  • Is Chicken Wire Enclosure Safe for Cats

Depends on the size of the cat.

  • Not sure how energetic your cats are but I imagine chicken wire would get bent and out of shape quickly.
Our cat breeder, as well as 2 local catteries use cat netting for outdoor enclosures.
If you're wanting a snake-proof (python) enclosure, then there's a fine gauge netting to cover the lower part… apparently pythons don't like to climb it.

Our catio has mouse/snake mesh walls, but after many years it's now rusted and needs replacing,

  • Is the cage fully enclosed? If not the cats are going to escape.

  • It needs to be a thicker gauge wire that also doesn't bend. Cats (especially healthy, active ones) can bend and push through it over time, or dig under it. A particularly determined cat can chew through it and hurt their mouth in the process.

If you can cut it with scissors, a cat can get through it.

(A relative breeds cats and has built many enclosures)

  • lm not worried if the cAT escapes as 99% of the time when it escapes it just stays in the backyard, my only concern if it it tried to climb the chicken wire it will harm its paws , would nylon netting be much safer then steel chicken wire netting for its paws or not much difference

our cat enclosure was a chicken enclosure. it is regular chicken wire (but with fine snake mesh around bottom 1m). they have been fine in there for around 4 years so far, including when one climbed up the walls and realised the roof was also covered so sat in what can be best described as a make do hammock of bird netting (bird netting was original roof before we moved to where there are foxes)
