Just be careful if you get stopped by police (i.e. RBT) and police deem this as an entertainment device (as its not a built in device) its 3 points and approx $500 fine. My friend got booked 6 months ago on a long weekend.

Also most of the time the fine cannot be challenged as its considered as operating an electronic device while driving

    • +4

Thats odd. How is that different to a docked mobile phone being used for GPS ?

      • +1

        https://www.nsw.gov.au/driving-boating-and-transport/roads-s…

Depends at the time what the officer deems it. They may inspect it and if it has video /audio capabilities, they may deem it a digital screen .

Just a heads up make yourself aware if the digital screen legistlation before using anything other than mobile phones/dedicated GPS devices as they CANNOT BE CHALLENGED successfully in court.

        • +2

But even if it's deemed a digital screen, if it's being used as a navigational aid, it should have been fine…unless I'm reading your link wrong?

I'd say someone is lying! (Either the cop was just dodgy, or your friend was using the device for a non-allowable purpose - either could be true, tbh!)

(Fwiw, sounds like having it ON, but not using it for navigation would be a non-allowable purpose - which is likely what happened!)

          • @caprimulgus: So you are not allowed to use a device that has media capapbilities other than your mobile phone as its considered essential. Same applies to dedicated GPS devices. They also have a screen size limit of under 7".

Anything else such as tablets and other digital devices are not allowed unless they are built in stock by manufacturer.

If your not convinced call tomorrow and inquire.

            • @easternculture: I'm just going by the link you provided for your state. My reading of it is, no: you cannot use a device like this for media playback (like you would a mobile phone). You may only use a device like this for navigational aid. If you are not using it for navigational aid, then it must be switched off (or not visible to the driver).

Not saying whether this makes sense or doesnt - just saying how I interpret the link you have provided.

Sounds like your friend was using it for media playback (eg. music), which is not allowed under the laws of your state.

          • +1

@caprimulgus: A quote from the link above states:

“You must not drive with a digital screen on if you can see it, or it could distract another driver, unless you’re using it as a driver's aid. In this case, it must be in a holder fixed to the vehicle or built into the vehicle.”

Sounds like it’s fine if it’s displaying map information, like Google maps. Just have it on that all the time so if a cop stops you, it’ll be a driver aid they first see when they approach you.

        • this is not true at all - the legislation is very clear - you can use a docked IPAD if you want, as long as it is displaying maps and not entertainment, you are fine - "your friends" story is incomplete or not true - the officer can inspect the unit if they want, but it has no bearing on the law as it is all about what you were doing with the unit whilst driving, not what it is capable of doing.

    • Where was this? Seems absurd, unless that malaka was using it to watch movies or send a text.

      • Didnt really get into the story but he came and asked me of there is any to challenge the fine. And from my research i was enlightened to how serious digital screen traffic offences are

        • I think the main thing is that the law is down to interpretation, by both the individuals governed by them and the individuals employed to enforce them, what one police would charge someone for, another may not. Although it should be uniform across the board, the nature of humans means it will always be that way. Your friend may have had the only officer in your state that would actually ping someone for one of these which is just unfortunate. You should be able to fight your case in court though, thats kinda the point of court existing, to question and refute the police assertation that you were in the wrong.

You can challenge in court but you wont win. Unless you have video evidence that you were in the right, the magistrate will almost always take the side of the officer issuing the fine (whether its police or council) given that the officer has never been officially proven to abuse fine power.

And offcourse, the likely hood that you would be stopped by a police officer is low if you are driving safely. However, they are always looking for a reason to fine you in the background. Source: i have a few mates in the police force and they are told to do this .

Another scenario would be if you have a larger one mounted on dashboard or windscreen, and the mobile phone camera detects you touching it, it will take a picture. Because its larger than a phone , you will probably get a fine as they will likely assume you are using a tablet for media purposes.

There is no case study yet regarding these exact devices so no one can make that assertation. The rest of your comment is just hearsay and assumptions constructed without any actual evidence. When giving info like this its good to mention what you did originally, but you cannot make any assertations beyond the anecdotal story from your friend, its misleading and could result in unnecessary/unjust punishment.

I actually sat in a court room before i challanged my fine and when i challenged it. I also recently went with a friend challenging a fine. As i said, the magistrate will almost ALWAYS side with officer unless you have evidence as their job is to uphold the law. The only way you can discredit an officer is if you have video/audio evidence. The best you would get is a reduced fine but you wont win.

Plus all officers in NSW have body cams and they should always have them on

Neither of which has anything to do with these devices, so it holds no relevancy to this device in particular. Please put aside your desire to be correct and understand that you are throwing your opinion out here in a way that suggests it is fact when it isn't.. You honestly don't know how it would go in court because once again there is no case study around these new carplay devices. Its good you mentioned someone getting in trouble cause it is a possibility, beyond that you are just making things up.

Again - You have no idea how a court case involving these would result - no one does

                  • @doobey1231: Please try and let us know so i can say i told you so

There doesnt need to be a case study because they fall under digital devices.

A necessary digital device is allowed.
A non essential one is not.
Even touching a smart watch while driving can result in a fine.

                    Good luck

                    • -1

@easternculture: You are still not getting the point and I don't think you ever will. Welcome to hold your opinion but please don't push it onto anyone else because it is inherently wrong. Have a good day.

@doobey1231: Unfortunatly legistlation does not allow opinions. Its a written law. I recommend you invest some time and read the relevant legistaltion and the headunit requirements for your relevant state before you commit to one of these.

                        Good luck

            • +1

@easternculture: so now you think you get fined on assumptions?

              Just stop

              • @the-fuzz: Lol. Its up to the police officer at the time they stop you. If you are doing something wrong or illegal, they would. They follow the legistlation.

If you have one of these mounted and have a youtube video playing your fav song yes they will fine you.
If you are found using it for other than GPS, yes they will fine you.
If its over 7" and the officer deems it non essential because you already have your other phone on GPS guidance and your stock car headunit is functional, then you might get a warning or fine.

                • +1

@easternculture: Im referring to your comment on mobile phone detection cameras…….

I can guarantee I have spent A LOT more time in courts than yourself, for these types of matters - body cams are not always on….. and they are not relevant to traffic matters. The HWP dash mounted camera could be used, but it will not show what was on the screen, A motorcycle officer using their helmet mounted camera could be used if they pulled up next to you whilst you were watching "entertainment".

You are not getting a fine because your "screen" could have been playing a movie - the officer needs to provide evidence that this was the case, the police prosecutor needs to challenge your evidence and 95% of magistrates are normal people who deal with police on a daily basis, thus understanding they make alot up.

My point about all of this - if you are following the legislation and using this device, you have nothing to worry about.

                  • @the-fuzz: Also as mentioned below, the legal requirement of digital screens aka headunits that provide entertainment is that they are wired to the handbreak to disable the media capabilities.

            • @easternculture: Court is not a binary - win or lose system. Majority traffic cases in court are for pleading. You can explain and convince the magistrate about the circumstances - whilst accepting your fault. He will consider your prior traffic offence history and then issue the penalty/fine.

I attended couple years ago, accepted my fault, requested the magistrate for leniency and he let me go. It was my only time in a court.

              • @r0nmac:

                Happy for you mate.

Interesting. How do they let Teslas on the road then? They literally have netflix in them lol
Plus screen size is more than ipads

      • -1

Apparently if its stock from manfacturer, then its legal.

Some car makers initially had head units with media capabilities but were removed on later models for legal requirements

        • -1

Again - not true at all.

They still have media capabilities, the only requirement is they cannot be on, unless the handbrake is engaged and car is in park.

          • @the-fuzz: *provided it is wired into the handbrake, thats the legal requirement.

The headunit thats posted here is not wired to the handbreak to disable media functions which infact could make it illegal if you read the relevant legistlation

            • @easternculture: read what I replied to……. You consistently move the goal posts…….

I'm fully aware of the legislation - its part of my job…….

              • -1

@the-fuzz: Lol ok. Pulling out that "Part of my job" card now aye 🤣

You made my day … have a good one. Gotta run some errands

  • +5

I got one of these (without the camera) and it's fine for the price!

Also got a 12v one of these to power it via USB-C PD
    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006032167585.html

    • how's the audio quality through car speakers?

      • It's ok (using aux out) but I really only use for navigation

    • Is it slow? Any issues with overheating and shutting off?

      • +1

did a bit of research it's not lightening fast but only slight delay (google either 10.2 B5303 carplay or pofodo 10.2 carplay there are some reviews / videos), with wireless carplay etc & reverse camera, mount etc it's good for the price I managed to find it for $57 on aliexpress gonna chuck it into one of the cars without carplay I'm not expecting it to be amazing just to do the job

      • +1

No issues with overheating and shutting off so far. It's not slow or super fast, and doesn't lag when giving directions or in general use.

For the price, not a multitouch screen so can't pinch to zoom. Using a Subaru Crosstrek rental at the moment and the inbuilt screen doesn't have pinch to zoom either so not sure if that is just a limitation of Carplay (?).

    • hey mate just wondering which one of the USB-C PD was the right size for that aliexpress unit

  • +3

You can get this cheaper on AliExpress, and it ships from Australia as well (mine arrived in a few business days, despite the estimate on Ali).
