Which Grocery Savings App Are You Using? Grocerize / Frugal / Gander / Wiselist

Are any of these apps worth downloading?

I always check the catalogues from Aldi & Colesworth before I go shopping.

Would these apps make it easier?

Also I stumble across store specials from time to time, which aren't in the catalogues.

I just try and bulk buy regularly used shelf-stable items like tinned tomatoes, pasta, etc when they're on sale. Checking catalgoues or even an app every time you go shopping seems exhausting and I doubt any extra savings would cover the time and mental energy spent.

    • hint: it won't.

I went down the rabbit hole of using these apps and stuff, only to realise that Aldi is cheaper most of the time so why bother.

I've got a spreadsheet listing items we usually purchase with links to the item on the websites of the shops we purchase them from. Usually only use for more intermittent or bulk purchases like cat biscuits, printer ink, etc.

To update just need to click the link, enter the current price and date, and the sheet will show me who's cheapest.

      • Nice work - you should make an app for that !

Spreadsheets work on your phone too.

And that is the reason these apps are pretty useless to be honest.

You also need to factor in your time spent trying to save a few dollars, is it worth it?

I prefer better habits and broad strokes rather than penny pinching and tonnes of research.

I do all my fruit and veg shopping at markets like flemington, and other things at aldi (colesworth where appropriate). I'll occasionally check colesworth for things that are 1/2 price and take a few if I need them (eg: chips).

At the end of the day you can spend countless hours trying to optimise this, at the cost of your time and sanity

Yeah most of the savings comes from bulk cooking and consistency in not getting take out or buying pre-prepared foods.

Grocerize isn't an app you don't need to download it… its a website.

I just get all half price stuff from woolies and coles. Cheaper than Aldi 95% of the time.

Depends what it is. A lot of their "half price" stuff is actually more expensive than Aldi at retail. Notice how Aldi doesn't have to resort to fake sales like colesworth?

As an example even at half price the chips at colesworth are usually the same or more expensive than Aldi.
