Network Box Ideas

Hello technology OzBargainers, I have a Wi-Fi modem, router, NAS, and power supply (UPS) sitting on an Ikea stool in the corner of a storeroom.

Do you have any suggestions on how to better house these things?

Ideally, I want it wall mounted and up high to free up ground space. Mount the Ikea stool to the wall?

Thank you.

Place on top of bookshelf or cupboard.

In case you haven’t heard, bookshelf has been discontinued because it has been a long time since anybody bought a book.

Beware, you're getting dangerously close to homeserver territory which is addictive and expensive

If you're going to be adding more equipment, consider a wall mounted cabinet such as these

    • Not going to be adding more equipment but it would be nice to get the equipment off the ground. They seem quite expensive for a box!

you can pick them up pretty cheap second hand on ebay

  • Two stools?

single bracket dead centre with even distribution of weight. Save $7.89 plus disbursements for screws.

      • For NAS and UPS? Wouldn't do that at all. NAS and UPS go bang on the floor and will most likely no longer work. More expensive than $7.89.

Obviously you'll have to standby to catch the NAS if a particularly big write jolts it out of balance.
But if it saves $7, would be worth it to some!

Do it right and get a wall mounted comms cabinet.

    • That's what I was thinking. A Box /cabinet of some sort that can be wall mounted. Don't have the floor space.

This is the way - all other options are ghetto and just ugly.

  • i keep all under my desk

    One of these? https://www.ikea.com/au/en/p/eket-wall-mounted-cabinet-combi…

Just need to work out ventilation holes.

I had one of these mounted on the wall high up in my study until I went a 40RU cabinet once I started expanding my rack mount gear. It’s nice and out of the way.

Could also build a simple shelf with two angle brackets wherever is convenient for you- use some wall plugs like these to mount pretty much anywhere

    Or these

I think i have to measure things up go work out the right sized cabinet.

I have moved my NBN modem and wi-fi router into the roof space. NAS is sitting inside the entertainment unit and I haven't been game enough to move it into the roof space as it could get hot up there during the day.

  • Do WiFi signals get effected when the router is put into a box?

    • +2

Of course - especially a metal network cabinet. They're not designed to hold WiFi routers/access points

Thank you. Maybe put it on top of the cabinet…
