Asahi Super Dry 500ml (Case of 24) $69.25 + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store) @ Dan Murphy's (Free Membership Required)

190

First time posting so please be gentle:

This is brewed in Japan and imported. This is by far my most purchased beer! Not quite as nice a Orion or Premium Malts but way better value for money when buying the 500ml cans that have been imported from Japan. Enjoy!!

I purchased two slabs and can 100% confirm that mine are imported from Japan and made in Japan.

Special offer is only available for 6 packs in SA not Slabs

This is Japanese brewed and imported 😄

I'm pretty sure Dans (and most other places) stock the locally brewed 500ml cans nowadays.
It says 'Australia' in the product specs on the site.

        • +1

I got 2 slabs yesterday at this price and both were from Japan.

      • +2

Says Australia in the product specs. I'm pretty sure it's brewed locally

        • +1

Perhaps its a mix, but the last two I got were imported from Japan

          • @Salster: Last one I bought from Dan's was also Japanese brewed.

  • +3

Last lot I got from Dans were Aussie brewed. they’ve switched from the Japanese brewed. Def not as good IMO. switched to Monsuta

    • Ah that sucks! My last two were from Japan

    • +1

Monsuta is great! Much more like Orion than Asahi 👍🏽

      • Monsuta is brewed by Orion I believe 😁

        • For Dans!

    SA done dirty again.

    • Shows the same price for a slab in SA.

  • Says "Country : Australia"

    • +2

I just triple checked my packs and they all say "Beer - made in Japan" "Brewed and made in Japan by Asahi Breweries Ltd, Tokyo, Japan. Imported to Australia by Asahi premium beverages pty Ltd.

I bought a case last week and they it says brewed in Japan

  • So cans that have heat cycled in an unrefrigerated shipping container across hemispheres taste better than those that have been locally brewed to the exact same recipe? Interesting…

    • +2

Funny story, but my mates and I did a blind Japanese beer tasting comparing imported versus made under license and overwhelmingly the imported won.

      • Doesn't surprise me if you want to drink Aussie Beer drink xxxx and good luck to you if you want Japanese beer get it from Japan.

    • It's clearly not the same Asahi san would be turning in his grave.

    • You're not a beer drinker are you? Stick to your locally brewed Canadian clubs.

  • Once the old batch of imported Asahi cans sell out, they're only getting the locally brewed cans

    • That will be a very sad day!

  • Product specifications
    Country Australia

    • As I said above, I got two slabs and they are both imported from Japan. Would definitely check when doing C&C

      • Would definitely check when doing C&C

And if it's not? Would they allow a return?
The product clearly says it is made in Australia.

Fat chance.. Dan's did a catalogue promo on imported Heineken last year and when I went to grab it in-store they were actually the Aussie version. When I complained to head office they admitted they incorrectly advertise them as 'imported'. They changed the listing, but not the price and basically told me bad luck, no credit, no acknowledgment for wasting my time, just buy the Aussie version for the same price or piss off

        • I have never had a problem with a change of mind at Dan’s house and getting an exchange or refund. However, mileage may vary depending on where you live and how nice you are to them I would guess

          • @Salster:

and how nice you are to them

If they were customer focussed, it should be the other way around.

            • @jv: Agreed @jv but sadly, in my experience, that’s not how a lot of Aussie businesses operate.

Good price, my fav beer. Always get the 500ml's as they seem to be the only ones from Japan and despite what people are saying I got a case last week from my local Dan's which was from Japan, so they are either too trusting of what is on a webpage or things are changing which will be annoying.

Thanks OP. I've been waiting for the price to drop from their RRP.

  • No case deal in WA either, only 6 pack.

  • AU, not japan at burley waters

  • Price has gone back to normal for me in Vic

  • Also 12 x 500ml Asahi from Japan $70.19 + Free Shipping

    Replied to your comment there:
    Dearer price @Dans in Qld
    $22 for 6 as member
    $76.99 for case of 24
    Same in SA.
    Still at this price.

    • Yeah the price has gone now and only a members discount on the 6 pack is remaining ☹️

      • +1

Just purchased 3 cases @$69.25 each.

Might be dependent on stock at your local store.

        • Awesome!! Thats great news! Was it Japanese, or like some others were saying that it is now AU Asahi? Mine were definitely Japanese

          • @Salster: Will tell you after I pick up tomorrow.

          • +1

@Salster: Altough the carton itself has the curious and initially worrying "brewed and canned under supervision of Asahi Breweries Ltd., Tokyo, Japan" and also "AUS 30 11 23" for the best before stamp on the carton, the 6-pack cardboard container and the cans themselves have "brewed and made in Japan by Asahi Breweries Ltd., Tokyo, Japan", then "imported to Australia by Asahi Premium Beverages Pty Ltd", listing their Southbank VIC HQ address and same best before date.

Just chilling some now to see if there is any difference in taste.

Should be noted that they did change the recipe about 2 years ago. I preferred the old recipe, but there's not much in it, and for a mass produced lager the new one is still fairly solid. Got to agree though that the stubbies brewed in Vietnam and China are swill.

You would hope now that Asahi own CUB, even if they brew here they should be able to get pretty close to the original in a brewery of that size and standard.

Little known fact is that for decades about 70% of the malt used in all big brand beers in Japan was provided by the Kirin Malt factory in industrial area of Perth (sourcing all of their barley from the wheatbelt a few hundred km's outside of Perth). That is why there wasn't massive difference between the taste and styles of a mass produced AU and JP lager - all very high standard.

IMHO, I think that Sapporo Black Label is about the best of the reasonably priced mass produced Japanese beers (Yebisu obviously best but at a slightly higher price point). Sapporo is brewed under licence here in Australia at Coopers. Comes pretty close to the original, if you ask me, and would expect a decent standard from Coopers. They did discount pretty heavily a few years ago when first brewing them here under licence, but although haven't really been looking can't say I've seen decent deals on a carton of Sapporo for a while.

Actually prefer consuming and brewing craft beers myself, but Super Dry is the go to for my better half who doesn't quite appreciate the nuance of the craft tastes :-).
