Recommend Me a New Smartphone for Less than $1,000

My trusty Samsung S8+ is on its last legs and I need an Android replacement for less than $1,000. I was leaning toward the Xiaomi 13T from Spectronic for $715 but was wondering if there might be a better alternative I should consider. Any suggestions welcome!

Must have:

  • Great battery life
  • Good camera
  • 5g obviously

Wouldn't mind but not necessary:

  • A headphone jack
  • Expandable storage
  • E-sim capability
  • Available at brick and mortar retail rather than online

Don't need:

  • Gaming capability

  • I ended up getting a S24+ for $1048 used my busted S8 to get the bonus trade credit although its probably neded now was through Gov EPP

    • I wasn't aware you could use an S8 as a trade in but, yeah, I think that deal is long over, sadly.

Motorola G54 has been a popular pick for OzBargainers in recent months.

Can be found readily for $250 to $300, regularly discounted to $200 to $250.

There have also been a handful of times it has dropped below $200.

Fulfils all of your dot points except for the camera (maybe you could use the difference leftover from your $1k to buy a dedicated camera? :D) and the availability at physical stores is dependent on whether the store you choose to buy from has a pick up option.

    iphone 13/14

  • Poco F5 pro. ~$820 delivered from Goldway store @ aliexpress - there is probably some discount codes to reduce it further Link

Only 2 years of software support remaining and $100 more for a worse camera. Doesn't seem like the right choice for me, unfortunately. Appreciate the recommendation though.

Poco x6 pro reads pretty well , and around $500.

  • Why is 5G so important, let alone obvious?
Not a problem with $1k budget, but I'd rate waterproofing and esim higher, and software that hadn't been mangled by Samsung.
If G54 doesn't do if for you, get a Pixel.

    • Because 5g is much faster than 4g? I wouldn't rate esim capability above it as I'd only use that rarely while travelling.

  • Poco x6 pro global version

    Monsterly great phone

  • i got a moto think phone.
    crap camera though.

I have the G84 and the G54 as a backup phone.

The G84 meets all your needs except the lack of esim. Has a very bright screen that looks really nice.It operates very smoothly and I find the camera pretty good. I really like this phone and I think its a keeper.

The G54 has everything you need, but I find the screen a little sub par, especially regarding brightness. Also the colour temperature has a cool hue that I have not found a setting that looks good to my old eyes. Again, camera is ok in my opinion. definitely a step up from the G82. Other than that it is very good, especially for the price when on sale.
