[SUBS] Suzume (2022) Now Streaming on Netflix

1360

From director Makoto Shinkai (Your Name., Weathering with You, The Garden of Words) comes Suzume, a modern action adventure road story where a 17-year-old girl named Suzume helps a mysterious young man close doors from the other side that are releasing disasters all over in Japan.

Storyline

Suzume, a 17-year-old girl who lives in a quiet town in Kyushu, meets a young man on a journey "looking for doors." Suzume follows him to a dilapidated building in the mountains and finds a free-standing, undisturbed door as if "it" alone were saved from devastation. Suzume feels drawn by an invisible power and reaches out to the door. Soon, doors all over Japan start opening one after another. The doors that opened must be closed to shut out calamity that lies on the other side. The places she wanders into have a sky where all hours of the day seem to blend together. Beckoned by the mysterious doors, Suzume's "journey of closing doors" begins.

Strangely yes. You could also post when a movie is on free to air TV.

A great deal would be getting a dollar every time this question is being asked :D

        We'd all be rich

      • That's cool. Gave me something to scan and put in my watchlist

        thanks

Member since 2019 and this is your first time encountering this? surely not.

      • First time noticing an Addition To Streaming service because it's not one they are interested in, probably.

    • +3

Aww, look at you raging against the machine

      Bless

    • if it's aimed at otakus you'll get the seal of approval

    • Does this mean I can post free pics of my cat here too?

I'm happy to see this and am gonna watch it so thanks.

However, despite the description and the clarification from @frowny it does seem a little out of context for what this site is about

Still, it's what I'm watching tonight

      • Ive gone and plonked!

      • Don't be one of those plonkers.

        You're a bit slow.

This was mentioned 22 hours earlier which is why I mentioned @frowny who posted exactly what you wrote, as well as it being clear in the title.

I'm happy to see these, however, I can see the point @headless was making.

I'm not complaining. It does help if you read a post properly tho

          • @G-rig:

I'll keep posting if people keep whinging about these type of deals.

Did you even read what I said?

"I'm happy to see this and am gonna watch it so thanks"

It's pretty easy to scroll past and/or are too lazy to change the settings.

Read my post, I am happy for these. I don't want to change my settings, I was just agreeing that this isn't really a typical bargain.

You really are dim-witted aren't you? That is not whinging!

          • @G-rig:

It's pretty easy to scroll past and/or are too lazy to change the settings.

How ironic. You could do the same thing ya know… Scroll right past the whinging comments…

Have you guys watched the parasite the grey? it's pretty good :P

+1. Watched it in cinema and it was awesome. Although I still think Your Name is the best with Weathering With You next favourite.

      Your Name ftw

    • Thanks my weekend is shorted.

  • Shame it's not the 4K HDR release, but I suppose they haven't released that version outside Japan yet

    • Correct me if I'm wrong but anime very rarely ever gets a 4k release. The best workaround would be, if you have an nvidia gpu, enabling their rtx super resolution and their new rtx video hdr

      • There are a handful of 4k anime movies at JB. One of which is Weathering With You.

Your Name also has a 4k (at least in the UK).

      • +2

        It's a 4K HDR BDRip on Stremio

    This song though. So beautiful.

What was interesting about Your Name was that it portrayed Japan (Japanese cities and towns and countryside) almost exactly as they are in real life. Although the colours and skies in Tokyo probably look slightly better in the movie than in real life. The attention to detail was phenomenal, and it made the movie so much more enjoyable to watch. I've seen so many anime that fuzz over that detail, creating a very fake looking Japan.

    • Weathering with you pulls off the exact same trick I reckon.

  • +2

In my personal opinon, this was my favourite out of Your Name. and Weathering With You. It had the best side characters, and felt the most fun to watch (along with being visually stunning as expected of shinkai).

That's not to say the others were bad or anything, I loved them. Your Name lives rent-free in my head even years after watching it.

I think it's best enjoyed in cinema because the sound was awesome and they decided to go 21:9 for this movie, but I'm glad to see it being added to Netflix

  • is the movie ok for 8 yrs old girls? Ta

    • Its been a while since I saw the movie at the cinema, but it may scare small children. No gore. Eight year olds should be fine. Also there are scenes of intense grief that may upset children.

Try to see it without reading too much about it, as it's worth letting the story evolve in front of you without spoilers.

  • Third act of Suzume got me right in the feels 😁

  • I watched the English version a couple days ago. I thought it was pretty good, but I felt the character Serizawa was a little weird. The whole story of Souta owing him money, then flipping it around to him owing Souta money didn't make any sense at all. Not as good as Your Name, I haven't seen Weathering With You.

    • +2

I would rate the movies in this order:

      1. Your Name (Shinkai is never going to beat this)
      2. Weathering With You
      3. Suzume

Weathering With You and Suzume are different movies and are both good, but there are flaws in the plot that subtract from both, especially Suzume. Weathering with You has a couple of spectacular music pieces.

What about Hoshi no Koe and 5 Centimeters per Second?

        • +1

I don't remember anything about Hoshi no Koe even though I watched it years ago. 5 cm/s is somewhat memorable since I remember it as the first Shinkai work I watched and the fact that it had a sad melancholic ending - people do tend to remember bad things more after all. Definitely prefer the 3 works Cluster listed.

      • +2

Garden of Words isn't too far off Your Name for mine

    • That was just to show he's a bro to Souta. He says he has to come along because he's owed money (kind of selfish motive) but actually he just wanted to look out for his pal.

That said, I really didn't enjoy Suzume that much at all hah.

      • -1

It was just unnecessary. It was already clear by that point he was doing what he could to help. It just seemed pointless to throw that in on top at the end. It's like extra praise after already having put someone up on a pedestal. Couple other things I didn't get was…

        SPOILERS

The Tokyo keystone (I forget the name) just showing up in cat form and then joining the party in the third act out of nowhere. Perhaps it was the more mature/parental god trying to put things right. But didn't really feel explained all that well.
The paradox around the 3 legged chair being a completely separate object from the original 4 legged chair due to the time loop… She receives the 3 legged chair at age 4 from her older self in the ever-after. Then keeps it all that time until at age 17 she gives it to her younger self in the ever-after, repeating the loop.

  • Suzume Chan.

What streaming platforms have Your Name and Weathering with You

    • Prime video has both I think.

      • They both used to be on Netflix…. How annoying.

      • FYI they’re only available to rent, not included with Prime.

  • This is also streaming on Chrunchyroll

  • Really good movie (still nowhere near Your Name. imo though), but absolutely phenomenal soundtrack by Radwimps, who have done Shinkai's last three films.

  • The doors that opened must be closed to shut out calamity that lies on the other side.

Sounds a bit like Hodor in Game of Thrones.

  • Also, came across this Parasyte: The Grey on Facebook. Looks good. Maybe time to go pull myself back on Netflix?

So… haven't watched any anime etc for a very loooooooong time.
I watched Suzume before it came up on this thread and earlier, Blue Giant. Enjoyed both!

I then saw all the "Your Name" recommendations here and thought I'd give it a go. Just finished it… wow it's good like you all said. Glad I came across this thread and saw all the recommendations.

    Thanks Ozbargrainers!

Complete the set and watch 'weathering with you'!

      • Thanks man, def gonna give this a watch. To be honest, usually not my genre but really enjoyed the two so far. I'm sure I'll enjoy Weathering With You.

        • +1

It's a strange genre of slice of life + weird supernatural stuff…..but it works.
