You Can’t Defeat Scam Callers

I activated a new amaysim number today and within 2 hours i’m getting scam calls and texts to the brand new number. All of it was the stupid shit like unverified passport and missed packages.

Is it getting to the point where even a new number can’t get past being on a scam list? Do the scammers just try random numbers and see what sticks or are ‘new numbers’ being recycled?

Likely they’re not new numbers, it’s just new to you

And the reason the previous person got rid of it was due to all the scam calls they were getting…

    • You can look up where the number was originally provisioned. There's a good chance it wasn't originally an Optus provisioned number.

The numbering plan provides that numbers are recycled after a 6-12 month quarantine period - See ACIF Code C565:2005.

Section 10.12 provides that a number recovered because of nuisance calls must not be Issued to another customer, by any CSP, for at least 1 year after the number is
recovered. For non-nuisance calls a CSP must not Issue the number to another customer for at least 6 months after the number is recovered.

You'd be quite lucky to get a number that hasn't been used before. You'd really need to find a number shortly after a new prefix is released to the telco.

If you are getting scammy stuff the moment you activate ask Amaysim to get you a new number due to nuisance being received at the current #. They should change the number for free.

  • My new S24+ seems to filter almost all scam calls where my mate 20 would let them ring (almost 1-2 daily) I would block one number then the next day the last digit was different so would call through

My Moto Neo filters them all except for the chinese (west taiwan) embassy one

If you have a flagship smartphone you may have a call screening function that you can switch on. On Samsung it's Bixby Text Call
    https://www.androidpolice.com/samsung-bixby-text-call-guide/

on iphone it's live voicemail https://support.apple.com/en-au/105066

and on Pixel devices its Call Screen https://support.google.com/phoneapp/answer/9118387?hl=en

Live Voicemail is available only in English in the United States and Canada, excluding Guam, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

  • Recycled number.

  • I feel like it is a bit of a cycle with me.

I get quite a bit scam calls, text etc… then all of a sudden it stops, I stop getting scam calls/texts.
and then all of a sudden I start getting again on my e-mail, phone & sms

Since I've gone to pixel I hardly get any scam/spam calls or message.

    Their filtering is awesome.

    • not exclusive to the pixel. Eg same is available on Samsung

I went from Samsung to pixel about 12 months ago. Very similar but I think pixel is slightly ahead of the game.

i must agree, spam calls/txt get filtered very well on pixel

  • 2 hours i’m getting scam calls and texts to the brand new number

    recentish google phone?
Enable "Caller ID and spam protection"
I barely see any as they all get automatically detected/blocked or sent to spam. The spam and blocked sms folder is full of package delivery scam sms's that I dont have to see.

I just checked my auto blocked folder for shits and giggles. Apparently I owe on lot of money for using toll roads. My nearest toll road is 200km away.

      • We all get that one. I just delete it.

        • I don't even have a car…

          • @holdenmg: They are just using random numbers hoping someone will bite. What gets to me is I keep getting this one. They don't seem to get that I'm not going to fall for it.

Doesn't solve the issue of spam calls but for those interested in how long their number has been around for.

You can find out when your mobile number was first allocated by using the following website (it's an Australian Government run website)

    https://www.thenumberingsystem.com.au/#!/number-register/sea…

    • Wow, my number was allocated during March 1998.

I just blocked anything starting with 04 and that seemed to get rid of most of them.

Sucked in, I program my spam dialler to use +614

I tend to only get a 3am wake up text about not paying my toll fees, never owned a car

Set Do Not Disturb? Txts used to bother me but now I sleep soundly.

      • Me too, I leave the phone in the kitchen.

I've had to turn off my spam filter on my phone because centrelink calls from private numbers with next to 0 notice, and I'm dealing with a home insurance claim so I have to let all calls through. The amount of spam calls and text is next level
