Who to Use for Comprehensive Car Insurance?

So in the 3 years I've had a policy with Suncorp my annual premium has gone up by $600 with zero claims or demerit points etc.

This year I'm shopping around and looking for others experiences. My main priority is customer service, if I do make a claim I want the process to go smoothly. I have a good driving history with no claims other that for a windshield a couple of years back.

Who would you guys recommend?

Cheers

Having just done the rounds, I'd try Australia Post/QBE for a low-price first year premium

    • TIL Australia Post sells insurance

  • What state are you in?

LPT: bill shock is not an answer I will accept.

    • :) QLD.

      What state are you in?

      Anxiety

        That is an acceptable answer.

  • I've recently switched to GIO as they were the cheapest for me. Best to just do a bunch of quotes and find the cheapest one, but avoid the budget insurers.

"GIO does not offer insurance in Queensland. GIO and Suncorp are both brands of the Suncorp Group, a leading financial services group offering banking, insurance, and superannuation products."

Having just done the rounds, I'd try AAMI for a low-price first year premium

    • I just renewed for year 2 with Aust Post/QBE. AAMI was cheaper but I wasn't keen to change my policy conditions (young drivers). I called Aust Post and updated my demerit points status which reduced my premium by 20%

    • A rare moment when I agree with JV, I'm in regional QLD and switched to AAMI from QBE after they jacked the premium. They both offer a discount when you start a new policy

  • I go with to Qantas when they have good points deal on

ceebs it's issued by Auto & General Insurance Company same as Budget Direct

    • Yep, competitive price and I was gonna go with them but found they require the policy to be in the name of the registered owner which doesn't work for me. A person with a financial interest in the car is the one who usually takes out insurance.

  • I went through all the popular ones in Jan, have a look through car insurance tag.

I ended up going with AAMI who was just cheaper overall without any cashback/promo.

  • What car do you drive?

  • With RAA. Rav 4 costs us $700 something.

Been with AAMI for car and home insurance but recently it's been very bad.

Make sure to check their network of repairers against your location and be prepared to deal with their incompetent overseas team. Had a not at fault and they were painful to deal with so had to get AFCA involved.

  • My AusPost Full Comp annual cover is about to expire in a few days, quoted almost double since last year.

Have quoted through basically everyone, crazy inflated prices.
pd.com.au has come out the cheapest by far, 40% lower than AusPost's new pricing & close to my AusPost cover from last year.

Thanks, they were even more expensive than my current policy ($1793.00). :)

Crazy how they work it out..

  • If anyone has an active pd.com.au policy and is happy for me to use them as a referral shoot me a PM. Plan to sign up within the next few days.
    You get a $100 GC, I get a $50 refund.

  • coles car insurance

    • Not my experience. Last year premium from Coles was $469 for a 2010 Lancer. No value shown. I assume it's market based but can't find any evidence that is the case. Excess $850. no optional extras! This year's premium, just received, is $864. The car is worth maybe $6k. I've driven for 50+ years, never had an accident, never had a claim. So I've been looking around. Best is AMMI at $491, cover is $6,140!! Budget was $528 but had high excess. Biggest laugh was Compare the Market. I think there was only one recognised insurer, Budget Direct. Hadn't heard of the others, one quote was around $1,400! RACWA where I have been a customer for more years (house and wife's car insurance) than I can remember, quoted me close to Coles price with a market value of $6,400. I think age is a factor but Youi ($795) said it was not. End result, premiums have gone nuts.

  • If you are buying a new car, definitely use Australia post as they give new for old replacement for three years.

  • RACQ used to be quite well-priced but like most insurers their premiums increased last year. I can say from first hand experience though that their claims process is very smooth, from assessment through to repair.

I swapped over to Australian Seniors last year as they were significantly cheaper. Fortunately I can't comment on their claims process.

  • Woolworths Insurance if they have promotional rewards points. Last month they gave $60 worth. Budget Direct is also comparable. It is time consuming to search since each person/car seems to be different.

You can go back to Suncorp every other year, but you have to switch at renewal to let them know you shop around. Otherwise you get hit with a loyalty premium.

    • Thanks, yeah will try them again next year.

  • Have you tried asking your current insurer if they can match their competitor's pricing?

Avoid Youi insurance, they used to be very expensive but last year they did two things. They dropped their prices to be more competitive and also dropped the 'we ask more questions' rhetoric.
I threw it open to a forum online as I was thinking about going with them but almost straight away people responded telling me they still ask a lot of questions and the reason for that is so they can deny your claim if information has changed and you have not updated it.
If this is true then I'm not interested…

    • Pretty sure they can't deny your claim if the changes do not relate to your car policy. The PDS also has a list of events you need to notify them about so I'm assuming if an event isn't on that list then they can't deny a claim. Quote-wise I'm currently debating between YOUI and AAMI. ;)

Youi was really good when my sister's car was stolen - BUT - as they paid out the full claim, which meant that the policy ended, and then it took another three months for her new car to arrive, meaning she held no insurance at all for that three months, they jacked the quote way up on her new policy because she had no longer held continuous insurance. No doubt within their rights but it still didn't sit right. They knew why she hadn't held insurance all that time but it didn't matter.

        • Yes I wonder how much they tack on to the quote when you tell them you've had a claim within three years too?
