AliExpress with PayPal - International Transaction Fee? (2024)

hey all

yes i've read this post already (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/658793) , but it's over 2 years old. and I want to know if this is still happening recently.

i have an Australian credit card that I want to use and get bonus reward points. on Ali Express they have option to pay directly with card (can choose AUD/USD/EUR currency) or with Paypal. i'm guessing paying directly will definitely hit me with the international fee but not sure about Paypal.

my question is: if I pay with Paypal in AUD, will it be considered as an international transaction? has anyone tried this recently?

thank you

if I pay with Paypal in AUD, will it be considered as an international transaction? has anyone tried this recently?

With a card that charges international transactions it will because AliExpress is not located in Australia. Furthermore letting PayPal so the AUD exchange rate will result in an inflated rate.

I personally use a Coles Rewards Credit Card. I set AliExpress to USD, change the currency options during PayPal Checkout to USD so I get the Mastercard rate and earn Flybuys points. With cashback I get even more bang for buck.

    • i thought paying with paypal means the merchant processing will be located in Australia? Or is it still based on where the actual store is located?

Based where the store is as their bank account isn't Australian. The AliExpress' AUD rate fluctuates unlike the USD price too. You can get quite ripped off.

  • If I use Ali with Citi credit card, they charge around 4% international transaction fee no matter what currency it's paid.
I Always use either 28 Degree or ING cards for any international transaction, as they don't rip me off like Citi do.

  • I use Paypal on Aliexpress in Australian dollars. No seperate fees on my bank statement. Just the single transaction.
