  • Nice find. I've already got one, but another for the annexe area is good.

    Very nice find, thanks OP.

Grabbed the 10P version for $35 https://www.amazon.com.au/Coleman-Accessory-Northstar-Ground… - at Tentworld a similar sized area is about $70, so 50% off.

    • Thanks OP and thank you for the 10p option. Easy buy

    • Did the same as you. Brought the oztrail 10p tent a few weeks ago so this is perfect.

  • And it's gone..

  • Unavailable so quick…

  • Took me ages to realise this had nothing to do with wifi…

At 1st I thought the tent was included and was made of mesh, but it turns out the tent part is whited out as it's not included.

Ah that makes sense. I thought so too and thought this would be good as cover for my tomatoes in my garden to protect from possums.

  • Ahhh would have liked one of these….

  • So I buy this to add more weight and volume to my setup and.. that's it?

A tarp under the tent would at least help with waterproofing. This is a mesh to let the grass under your tent breathe, to my understanding. Which is great for the grass, but I don't think the upvotes come from the grass.

    • I’m not sure what advantages it has… some protection for the bottom of your tent?
I have heard some camp sites are requiring these under tents… but haven’t experienced that yet myself.

      • Yeah, it does add some protection, but so would a waterproof tarp. Surely it has some application, to some people in some situations, but I don't believe camp sites would require such device under the tent.

The whole thing smells like marketing and creating a trend to sell more plastic.

          Yeah I don't get it.

Sand, dirt and grit falls through mesh openings

Sand, dirt, and grit hit the underside of your tent through mesh openings.

Allows the grass underneath to breathe

Tent on top of this prevents the grass from breathing.

Prevents foreign matter getting into your bedding

This is nowhere near the bedding. Can leave footwear outside to not bring in foreign matter.

          I didn't know what I'm missing here.

I've seen similar mesh already installed at some camp parks - makes sense for them to protect their site from erosion, dirt spreading, etc.

Tarp can pool water right under your tent so I think this prevents that but still provides protection from the surface below.

      • Pooling water is mostly due to using a footprint larger than the tent base. The tent should fully cover the footprint.

        • I've had it happen with one that was slightly smaller than the tent, but yes I was told that as well. Hopefully this will be useful but I imagine a properly set up tarp will be fine.

      • I didn't think of that, but also never used a tarp under the tent, TBH. My tents usually have a built in floor (!), I only recently saw there are tarps to fit under a tent.

        • +1

Ours too, but you can get small holes if nothing is under it. I guess it's mostly to protect it from sharp rocks etc. We had a tiny hole after a trip (no tarp).

        • +2

Yes, most tents do have waterproof floors. However if you get a hole in the bottom of your tent, your cost to replace it is hundreds of dollars.

If you want your tent to last more than a few camping trips and want to prevent it from being pierced by unknown objects that you cannot see while setting up, you need to put protection down underneath the tent. A tarp is better than nothing, however a thicker mesh is better with an added benefit of very slight cushioning.

Mesh flooring when used as an annex also helps with preventing bringing dirt and other crap into the tent.

So is it purely marketing? Not really. Is it required for camping? Not really… but is it a nice luxury to have that will save you money in the long run.

These do a decent job at knocking any sand or dirt from the bottom of your feet, and dumping it through the mesh. It's a nice thing to have, but you can buy "sand proof" beach mats that are exactly the same. Aldi had some recently.
