Infrared/Scanning Thermometers - Looking for Recommendations

As per the title, I am looking for an accurate infrared/scanning thermometer.

I was gifted one but we've had nothing but issues with it so I want something else.

While the adults are happy with the old school mercury thermometers, kids don't want a bar of them.

Price ideally not more than $80 but I am flexible on price.

Thanks in advance.

  • We’ve used the Braun Thermoscan one for a while. Need to take it apart every few months to clean the battery contacts, but it’s been pretty good

Definitely didn’t buy it for $100ish or whatever it is now

  • What's the issue with the one you had previously?

I've got a few brand new in box sitting in my garage, happy to send you one for cost of postage.

    • Are Infrared accurate?

I'm actually looking for one for food to complement my Thermapen (to save me pulling out my whole roast out of the oven to measure the temp)

      • Infrared ear thermometers measures via ear canal so wax, ear infection or any form of obstruction can throw off the readings (a bit), most common times people complain they're not accurate is due to them not sticking in far enough (ie, user error). Push the nozzle in until you feel the circumference of the nozzle hugs the walls of your ear canal with no gaps.

As for accuracy, 1) from brand to brand you're likely to find a 0.1-0.3° variance, and 2) bear in mind tympanic (ear) readings are on average up to 1/2 a degree higher than oral. Oral and rectal are still the gold standard but obvious why they're phasing out.

In short infrared is accurate, I realised half way typing this that you weren't actually asking about ear thermometers but wanted to swindle the word rectal in here.

        • Good to know.

And yes, any excuse to use the words rectal, rectum, anus, anal, butthole etc is a good enough reason.

        • How can you tell the difference between an oral and rectal thermometer? The taste is different.

  • For some reason I thought you were asking for the ones for food. I was going to recommend a Thermapen.

I'm not sure the Infrared is accurate.

I also have the Braun Thermoscan. $50 10 years ago.

  • What issued did you have?
All brands do require that painful rtfm.
    No rtfm, no useful result.
