Just stumbled upon a great deal from JET Charge as they're celebrating their 10,000th home charger installation. They're offering a hefty discount on the Wallbox charger and installation—saving over $500! Seems like a fantastic deal for anyone looking to set up a home charging station for their EV. Thought I'd share it here since it's a limited-time offer!

I can't see any good deal from here. My charger cost me $700 & installation cost $650 with new CB + nearly 20m of 10mm cable as well.

    • What brand and specs?

      • Tesla

        • +1

So the specs on that says it's 11kw (3-phase) which means that the Jet Charge one above in the deal will charge the vehicle in twice the speed of the Tesla branded one.

Single phase is the same but so are the costs.

          • +2

@richadam: Tesla Wall connector can do 11kw 3 phase as well

            • +1

@ndenham: That's what I said, Jet Charge is 22kw, so twice the charging speed

              • +3

@richadam: only for EVs that can accept 22kw (there's a few but not many), a model 3 will only charge at 11kW regardless

              • @richadam: Fair enough, I hadn't noticed. Sorry

              • +4

@richadam: The tesla wall connector does 22kw on 3-phase too

              • @richadam: if your Ev cannot accept 22kw flow, it is useless, for example MG4 can only take 7kw.

            • +1

@ndenham: Tesla wall connector can do 22kw 3 phase

          • +1

@richadam: Most EV out there can only take 11kw anyway

    • Any chance you can pm me the contact details?

      • I'm in Syd. Where about are you?

        • I am in Sydney. Mind pm me the contact details?

        • I’m in Syd. R u able to pm me the contact details? Thanks.

        • In Sydney. Thanks. Will wait for your PM.

Yeah - I don't see the appeal - $700 for a Tesla wall charger and any sparky should be able to do it for less than 1k.
Worth noting that the Tesla wall charger will work with any EV brand and you only need to connect to it via wifi and set the flag in the settings.
Friend of mine uses one with her BYD Atto at home and it's a great option.

If you need to charge a non-Tesla EV, you won't get any charger-based control with the Tesla HPWC. It's not OCPP compatible so you won't be able to charge on solar for instance or integrate any other automation beyond what your car can do.

That being said, the extra $900 over the Tesla solution buys a lot of electricity.

      • $900 is 80000km at $0.08

        • Where can I buy a kWh for 8c? Or am I missing something? Genuine question - I don't have experience with EVs.

          • +1

@reu: OVO Energy charge $0.00 (ie free power) for kWh between 11am and 2pm, and $0.08 for kWh between midnight and 6am - you need to have an EV to get onto this plan.

So as long as you charge over night or in the middle of the day, you can run your EV for almost nothing.

Just be aware that this may not be a final price and may change based on your property/switchboard layout.

My quote increased $950 after specifics were provided.

Not saying it’s deceptive or misleading, but just be prepared.

That said Jet Charge were the most prompt and had the best customer service from all the quotes I received.

  • +1

Literally the same price as the quotes I got two years ago from other Electricians.

    • inb4 the "hurr durr ackshually inflation ackshually a great deal" crowd

  • Not a deal. Tesla charger works fine and most cars have software controlled charging even if they’re not Tesla. JetCharge supplied and installed my Gen3 wall charger for $1500

If you have PV, if you park at home during the day, if you want future flexibility these solar smart EV chargers make more sense than regular chargers.

It's going to cost you ~$900 more to get a solar smart charger (2300 for this while Tesla quote 800+700 install I think).

There is maybe 25c/kWh delta between solar power and imported power depending on your tariff. You're going to need to use 3600kWh to break even which is 54000km by my math, so could be as little as 3 years depending on your driving habits.

Lifespan of a charger like this should be much longer than that.

    YMMV

    • There is maybe 25c/kWh delta between solar power and imported power depending on your tariff.

      Can you elaborate ?
OVO charge 8c per KWh to charge over night, and pay 8c back for solar during the day.
Whatever you pay to charge over night, you can potentially make back during the day from your solar.

Not sure where you're getting the 25c from?

      • The majority of people are on flat or tou tariffs, will be paying roughly 30-35c/kWh give or take during the day, and getting 5-8c for export. Delta is 25c for easy maths. If you're putting your PV into your car instead of exporting it then you're losing a few cents export, but you're saving 30c imports by not importing at other times.

Yeah, sure there are interesting tariffs out there, but not everyone knows about or can use retailers like Ovo. Not everyone is best served by these types of tariffs due to other use cases. Some of these EV specific plans have 60c/kWh rates in peak periods plus demand charges which is a deal breaker for some. Some people can't park at home during the day to take advantage of their excess PV so my example doesn't work for them.

        Again YMMV

  • Can this be installed to a three phase AC to charge any EV via a 5-pin to type 2 32A cable?

This setup can supply up to 22kW. Will it damage a EV which can accept up to 11kW?

    • +2

No it won’t damage your ev. The car and supply equipment negotiate the speed and it’s managed by the car

Never use this company. Two months ago, I applied online to install a charger, and they came to give me a quote. They said it would be dangerous because the house is sloped and it is a two-story house, and they said they would go to the office and contact me, but they have not contacted me since then.

  • Can’t see a deal here, Tesla powerwall 3 $700 from Tesla, approx $700 install..

  • +1

https://evse.com.au/product-category/car-brands/mg-ev-chargi… is cheaper with15% off and depending on the difficulty of install, last time my sparkie only charge $600

  • I was looking at smappee for excess pv and scheduled charging, thoughts on that vs the Wallbox?

    So many options 😜

My solar is SMA but their EV charger+ SH2 would cost way more i think.

  • +1

$1900 for 7KW is crazy expensive.

I bought the 7KW https://inchargex.com.au/products/portable-ev-charger-32a-5p… for $300 last time they were on special, and it cost me $300 for a Sparky to fit the 5 pin 32A socket in my garage - assuming you're in a single phase house, then this setup is great for $600.

  • In regards to OVO, make sure you have a compatible smart meter. Our Atlas mk10a isn't, despite being a 'smart meter'
