Sony Alpha A7C II Not Charging via USB-C

I was very excited to finally buy a new Sony Alpha A7Cii after a very long search. I managed to get JB to price match Amazon at $2651 and then used 5% off JB vouchers to bring it down further.

Awesome.

Picked it up, installed the new battery, got a Usb-c cable and plugged it into charge. The charge light turns on for 10 seconds and then turns off. I left it for 2 hours.

When I came back - the camera still wouldn’t turn on. I swapped it for another at JB (assuming the worst) and the replacement is doing the same thing.

Is this normal or am I just being impatient? New one is plugged in and I’ll leave it overnight. I dont have a separate charger for the battery (NP-FZ100) which Sony kindly sells for $129!

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated from anybody out there with Sony cameras.

RESOLVED - I just needed a more powerful usb cable and hub. These big batteries need a higher charge.

  • Have the same camera. To me it doesn't sound like the camera is the issue, especially since you've swapped it once already. Haven't experienced the same issues you have, but try:

    • Check you haven't missed a piece of plastic you're supposed to peel off, especially around the battery or battery connections
    • Check the battery connection pins in the battery compartment
    • Taking out the battery and putting it back in
    • Taking out the battery, leaving the charging cable in and turn it on without a battery inside the camera.
    • Try a diff USB C cable or charging port/brick/outlet

I have the dedicated charger (lots of 3rd party on Amazon/eBay - i went with Neewer brand, it's fairly well known) but I use in-body charging 90% of the time. (Unrelated to your problem - just saying you don't have to spend $129 for this if you wanted it)

    • Great ideas, thank you for sharing.

      • If it still doesnt work, bring it back to jb!

        • JB were really good to swap over the first one, even though it was my own damned fault to not use a different power source.

If your Sony Alpha A7C II camera isn't charging via USB-C, here are some steps you can try:

    1. Remove the Battery: Take out the battery from the camera and then re-insert it. Sometimes this simple action can reset the charging process.

    2. Check the USB-C Cable: Try using a different USB-C cable. Faulty cables can prevent proper charging. Ensure you're using a high-quality cable that supports data and power transfer.

    3. Change Charging Port/Brick/Outlet: Plug the camera into a different USB-C charging port, wall brick, or outlet. Sometimes the issue lies with the power source.

Remember to be patient and allow the camera to charge overnight if needed. If the problem persists, consider reaching out to Sony support or visiting a camera service center for further assistance¹.

Additionally, here are some general tips for charging Sony cameras:

    • Make sure the camera is turned off while charging via USB.
    • Only use the original USB cable that came with your camera.
    • Avoid continuously charging the battery pack if it's already fully charged or close to being fully charged, as this can affect battery performance²³.

You do realise that jv just copied and pasted from an AI generator?

And I’m perfectly okay with that!

        • No need of AI, just googling, "Sony Alpha A7C II Not Charging via USB-C" also gives the same results. Lol

            googling does not bold correctly.

So I tried every usb hub and usb-c cable I could find until I saw the softly glowing light of a dell usb-c laptop charger. After a quick google check to see my camera wouldn’t explode I plugged the damn thing in.

AND THE CHARGING LIGHT STAYED ON!

So either it’s charging the battery just fine or my camera is about to go into meltdown.

Either way I’m happy to know the camera is fine. For those wondering - Sony do not provide a charger or custom usb-c cable with this camera. I reckon I might need to invest in a new usb plug that gives a higher charge (house littered with old iphone chargers and they don’t have the power I suppose).

    Thanks to all that responded!

    • You shouldn't charge from a USB hub (the ones that connect to a computer), they are low powered and don't have enough power to charge things up properly.

You can use any other USB C charging bricks or a multiport charger. Old iPhone chargers will (should) work just fine.

I could have sworn there was a USB C cable in the box.

      They should be fine…

      Or get something like this…
