RACV Towing Fees and Questions

Hi All

Need to tow sister's manual suv AWD - shes got RACV insurance (it's near her house) so she'll call tomorrow

Does anyone know the waiting time?
And will they send a flatbed truck- I heard that towing it on 2 wheels on the back or front can damage the differential?

She was going to tow it above the 20km limit to her usual mechanic- any idea about how much it is per km?

Thanks!

Addit
Called them so if anyone needs further info here it is:

Public holiday towing took only 30min wait time
They gave a flatbed truck
And yes it does damage the differential from my research.
And they do only 20km limit but given it is a public holiday they said they can tow twice 20km each..to her place and then to the mechanic.. hopefully

Hope it helps anyone

Does anyone know the waiting time?

It depends how busy they are.

  • shes got RACV insurance

    Her insurance won't care.

If they have roadside assist, insurance covers the cost.

Everything I've had towed has been on a flat bed, I have no interest in a tow vehicle that leaves part of the car on the road.

  • In Victoria it is for the most part illegal for a tow truck operator to use something other than a flat bed truck. You will get flat bed truck.

I have never waited more than 45-60 mins for a tow, and as I am driving a shitbox I have had several.

Tomorrow is ANZAC day. Early morning most likely they will send someone straight out, 30 mins max. Late morning you will be competing with a bunch veteran's cars whose batteries are cactus, so maybe to 1.5 hours. The call centre may give you some stupid-long waiting estimate but it will be less.

Excess kms will be something a bit over $5 per km.

I’ll call them this morning for you sir and report back

  • No idea of cost as I have total care.

I needed a tow about 12 months ago and the wait was less than 30mins.
I needed a second tow about 6 months ago and the wait was supposed to be about 1.5hrs, after 2hrs they called me back and said it would be at least 3hrs. I cancelled the request.

    • Negger want to explain that neg?

  • RACV Roadside Assistance will cover 20km, anything above is extra. Wait time will be longer on a PH, had to use one on a PH and it was around 1.5 hours.

  • The stories you accumulate over a lifetime.

Have only needed a tow once. Coming back from a kart race in Lithgow my car broke down in western Sydney, I needed it towed to my mechanic in inner Sydney. Rang NRMA. They gave me a $/km price that seemed reasonable. Agreed. Tow truck arrived. Loaded up the car on the flatbed, and hooked the kart trailer to the truck's towbar. Got to mechanic's workship. Towtruck operator told me how much I owed him, and it was twice the expected price. His explanation was that that $/km was for EACH of the car on the truck and the kart trailer being towed behind it

    • That's a joke…did you end up paying or contest it
.there should be a extra charge but no way double

And will they send a flatbed truck- I heard that towing it on 2 wheels on the back or front can damage the differential?

It won't harm the truck's differential at all.

    • From my research depends on awd or fwd etc…but yes harmful

  • Does anyone know the waiting time?

23 minutes if you call now….

And will they send a flatbed truck- I heard that towing it on 2 wheels on the back or front can damage the differential?

Normally they are flat beds. Request a flat bed.

Otherwise read the manual for towing and what you need to do. Normally there is an option to disengage the diffs etc.

So? How long did you have to wait?

  • Actually, RACV outsources it to the nearby towing services.
Mine was towed by Nationwide Towing
