CatchOfTheDay - Do they sell fake Monster cables?

I know it's a waste to pay for monster hdmi cable but it's only $23 shipped atm.

I actually prefer the Sony ones.

I use ordinary, generic 2-4 meter long HDMI cables on all of my computer and AV equipement (all costing less than $5) and they haven't missed a beat.

The signals that pass thru HDMI cables are all digital, which means that technically, there cannot be any signal loss or degradation, since the information that is passed through is either a "0" or a "1".

Of course, all digital equipment is susceptible to interference, but because digital signals are so resillient to them the problem doesn't really arise until you use very long lengths of cable (exceeding 15 meters or so).
In either case, there are VERY few people who do need 15+ meter long lengths of HDMI just to connect their tech.

For the rest of us, a $3~4 dollar cable does the job exactly the same way a $100 Monster branded cable will

    • yeh i know that all hdmi cable are pretty much the same. i tend to pick the 1 that looks better

but i dont like to wait for 2weeks or end up with a cable that might not work..
i hate to do all the cables eg take the TV off the wall, reconnect the cable etc just because the cable failed after a few months.

actually like the sony 1s better since its a twin pack
but ive NEVER seen sony cables come in net

if these a genuine.. $10 is alright for their QC..

    • A guy i know paid over $300 (from memory) for a really long monster cable for his projector.
I scored a 2nd hand projector, new motorised screen and a 10m HDMI for about the same price as his 'monster' cable.

The entire product range of monster is a crock of shit, don't waste your money.

Cheap HDMI cables are crap, they last about 4-5 months, Spending about 40-50 on HDMI cable will make sure its still working in 12 months time.

I learnt the hard way by buying heaps of $6 buck cables, none of them still go

    • Interesting, have only ever bought cheap and only ever had a problem with one. The thing is i have bought over 50 for myself, friends and family.

Perhaps your cheap source is also a crap source?

    • Mine cost $5 from eBay and I have it connected to my comp + benQ monitor. Used it for a year and still counting…

    • Your likely doing something wrong.

A HDMI cable that does not move and sits on the floor will last a very long time, even if it was $2.

Expensive cables are useful for cables that are moved or plugged in regularly as they have much better quality connectors.

The other benefit of expensive cables is they generally work better when over 10 metres, below this any cheap junk you find should work fine.

      • Expensive cables as in something that costs $20 on eBay, not your $100 cables that go at Jb HiFi or Hardly Normal…

        • I get your point, but realistically anything from eBay can be a fake or just as bad as a $2 cable.

There are plenty of $30-50 cables that I would buy from a reputable store if my HDMI cable was going to get a lot of wear and tear or was going 10m or more.

For me though, the 4 HDMI cables in my house make up two $2 cables, a $2.95 cable, a $5 cable and a white flat 10m HDMI cable for $30 (goes from my computer to my TV so I can play on the couch)

I never have any issues because nothing has been touched since I installed them.

        • True, but if you're buying a $20 "genuine" monster cable from eBay then you kinda get what you deserve.

There are a few small reputable aussie ebay stores that sell very good quality HDMI cables, I've used Space HiFi a few times and there cables are excellent.

I still don't see why you need to buy a high quality 10M HDMI cable, obviously you wouldn't buy the cheapest one from china with a 28AWG wire gauge, but i wouldn't be buying anything premium either.

I like the idea of the HDMI cable from the pc to your tv though.

I guess the price you pay for the HDMI cable depends on if it takes 5 seconds to swap it over with another $2 cable.

generally longer cables are fixed somehow and are annoying to swap over as well as the fact that everyone has spare 2m cables, but not 10m.

HDMI cable from PC to TV is perfect for Steam's new big picture mode which turns it into a console.

  • I bought a bunch of these (mostly 1m ones) a few weeks ago: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/84075 and they work great. Knowing the right length you need really helps with the cable situation behind the TV
