I'd go as far as to ask admins to remove this post:
    (1) It's basically just advertising
    (2) Crypto is a product that has actually caused more harm in our society than good. I don't know how many more examples of people losing homes/years of savings, from failed exchanges (FTX, Celsius, Blockfi), to coins (FTT, Terra/Luna, BeanStalk). Or the amount of sheer energy required for transactions (~215 kwH per transaction, or 27,400 TWh in 2023, i.e. 2% of US energy consumption).
    (3) Crypto was meant to be a means of decentralising transactions. It's now little more than speculative trading on something that intrinsically has little/no value. This conference is no different to others on pyramid schemes.

      • (1) I don't think discount = deal. One could simply jack up the RRP and then offer a discount. There are more than enough examples of downvoted deals as a result. I could find some if that helps, but I think you've been around to know what a downvoted deal looks like.

        (2) I fundamentally disagree that these events are designed to talk about the issues on taxation and regulation with blockchains. Reasons being:
a/ The decision/policy-makers required for these issues are not listed on any of the forums.
b/ The bulk of the time allocated for these events are for blockchain-related businesses to promote themselves in booths
c/ even in their keynote speaker agenda over 2 days, there are only 4 talks (out of more than 70) related to governance/security/privacy. None of which covers taxation or regulation explicitly. The closest one is some crypto startup is talking about cybersecurity issues.

I think you've also missed my point of my last point. There are always noble use cases for blockchains, but at the end of the day, I can easily name 20 instances where crypto has caused more social harm than good. Before asking questions around "how do we address the issues", we really need to ask ourselves "do we really need blockchains"? I don't doubt that Blockchain exists as a technology, but I don't think you can make an assertion that it's here to stay without any backing/reasoning. Many things exist, e.g. guns in America, doesn't mean it's a good thing.

        • Many things exist, e.g. guns in America, doesn't mean it's a good thing.

You’re right. But guns are here to stay too…

          • @bemybubble: then your analogy is pretty much equating this Crypto convention to a Gun convention. Do you think any of them are designed talk about the issues with guns?

            • @kenplho: It wasn’t my idea to conflate crypto with guns. That was your suggestion.

All I merely pointed out was that if you are going to compare the two then both are here to stay.

              • @bemybubble: It is absolutely my suggestion to conflate crypto with guns - I'm making a parallel between things that have caused society harm (e.g. mass shootings with guns in the US, to people losing their savings with promises of quick money in crypto).

The status quo is that both exist, but it doesn't have to stay. There are multiple instances where crypto has been banned (e.g. China, Egypt, Saudi), just like how there are instances where govts have implemented gun buybacks (e.g. Aus, NZ). These crypto conventions are trying to promote the use of crypto/blockchain (note: they call it a "crypto convention", rather than the blockchains, why do you think that's the case?), rather than coming at it from an angle of "oh boy, we are stuck with blockchains, how can we regulate it?"

So the question I'm really asking is - do you think crypto is good for society?

    • the amount of sheer energy required for transactions (~215 kwH per transaction
