Good find. Holding out for a 4K Max so my existing 4K can retire to the spare TV.

    • +3

I found upgrade to Max was not a big jump, almost non existent. I still found the menus sluggish. However, once I switched to the Fire TV I was like WOW! this is FAST!

I suggest look into that and get it when on a deal from Amazon and test it out for few weeks (Amazon offer 30 day returns no questions asked).

Is this version the equivalent to the 4K Max from mid-2022?
    The specs look the same

    • Almost the same. CPU is a bit slower on 4K2g, Wi-Fi/BT is a bit better on the new one, RAM are a little bit different. Everything else are pretty much the same as 4K Max 1g.

4K2g is running a newer version of Android (11 instead of 9) though.

    • +1

I had them both and the old max was noticeably faster

I'd buy this if I knew when or if my soniq tv is coming

    • +2

Buy and don't open. Return later, no?

    • +1

My fire stick max arrived yesterday before knowing when or if the Soniq TV is coming 😅

  • Waiting for a deal on the Chromecast with Google TV 4K. Kayo doesn't support the fire stick. Pretty sure once I buy the Chromecast, Kayo will work on the Fire stick though. That's how things work…

    • +3

My dad uses Kayo on the fire stick just fine.
I set it up and dont recall doing anything weird.

      • +1

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I want to view it in 4K. The firestick doesn't let you view in 4K yet.

    • +1

It’s been available on fire stick for at least a year now

    • +1

what? I use Kayo on my firestick for the outdoor tv - works like a charm?

    • I've had Kayo working fine on 4k firestick, I think from memory I side loaded the APK. Mind you I only used kayo for a year when it was free. Not worth the costs now, just an opinion..

    • +1

wait for the Chromecast Google TV 4K refresh, going to be announced at the Google event

  • +2

C'mon JB, 4K Max next, please!

  • I've got a 4K fire stick and they are absolutely plastered with ads.

  • +1

anyone know of any good IPTV links for just sports i could get for the firestick?

    • Plex has a good selection of free Sports and Entertainment channels on their Live TV section.

      • thanks. Am happy to pay too

Storage with the 8GB model for me, has always been an issue, especially if you want to run Kodi. Best to wait for the Max version.

As others have said, Kayo and Binge were added a year ago.

  • This or an Apple TV? Is it worth the extra $$

    • $39 v $200+ is a big difference in $$. The Apple TV is better… It's just a matter of how much that's worth to you. I use the ATV4K as my primary media steamer.

      • Apple TV can also be HomeKit hub if that’s relevant to you

      • I'm thinking of moving from FireShit to AppleTV. Can I play media off a USB drive like the FireStick, or is it annoying like the iPhone with transfering to the VLC app, streaming over the network, etc?

    • Very easy to side-load apps into Fire Stick but I don't think it's possible to do that on Apple TV (as far as I know).

  • i will use this one mainly for youtube,

my current chromecast 3 only default to stream 480p youtube, what about fire tv?

    • +3

Download SmartTube on Fire Stick, avoid ads, 4k available.

      • any no ad youtube link to download on phone? my vanced youtube dead

        • Youtube Revanced.

        • Try Firefox Focus

These are great (and small) if you travel a lot like I do. Just load them up with your favourite apps like Kodi, Stremio, Aussie TV catch up channels, plug them into your hotel TV it’s like watching TV at home. If you go overseas get a VPN and you can watch Australian TV from anywhere. I joined JB perks and bought one for $29 with the intro voucher discount.

    • +2

i thought of doing the same. got to the hotel, plugged the Fire Stick into the TV, then couldn't do anything with it because I forgot to pack the remote (facepalm!). In the end it didn't matter, I was in Saudi Arabia, no VPN's allowed!

      • The Fire Tv app lets you use your phone as a remote! This came in handy when our remote stopped working and I had to wait for the new one to be delivered.

        • Yes it does - but the remote and the Fire Stick need to be on the same wifi network (as I far as I recall). To get the Fire Stick onto the hotel wifi without the remote, I think it's not possible. Maybe there's some clever geek way to make it happen, but I'm not a clever enough geek!

  • Can i watch other services with this? Have a TCL and am tired of the laggy UI and no prime.

    • Yes, it runs Android (for now)

  • Neat. Signed up and got the 10 dollar discount, bringing total cost down to $29 plus postage. We have this on the TV in our living room area and it works great. Our TV in the media room has been struggling to stream Disney, so this will work great for that one.

  • Anyway to create a one off phone number for the perks voucher?

  • what timing lol i bought this for $79 yesterday :(

i just bought this and going to return the other one since i haven't opened it

    • JB has a 14 day price protection policy where they will refund you the difference (on the same method you originally paid). You don't need to bring in the product - just the receipt

Sideload SmartTubeNext for ad-free Youtube with SponsorBlock.

  • This or Google chromecast?

    • +1

Chromecast, this device requires you click a profile to login. Chromecast just loads into home screen.

    • +1

The fire stick remote is better as it has physical fast forward and rewind buttons

  • When Amazon drops Android, will they force their new OS on Fire Sticks already on the market?

  • If I want to be able to project my laptop or android phone (separately) on to any TV while traveling, is this a good option or are there better ones?

  • Does firestick run vanilla Android TV or bloaty ad riddled Google TV?

    • +2

Ad filled Amazon skinned Android TV.Probably why it's 1/3 the cost of the 4k CCwGTV.

FWIW, I have the Max model and I prefer it over my CCwGTV in terms of UI smoothness but, ATV is best.

    • Bloated and Ad-filled. When I first bought mine, it was great. Now it shows random (profanity) ads.

  • Thanks OP - Bought with $10 voucher

  • Anything I can do to run this on my non-HDCP compliant TV?

    • Just coming back on this. I purchased this and was able to use it with my existing TV. Now wondering why Chromecast didn't. This requires a wall plug; mine didn't run off the TV's USB.

      • I recall reading that the Fire Stick needed 1 Amp but the CCwGTV needed 1.5 Amps. If your TV's Usb port is limited to 1 Amp, that could be why.

  • I have a Vodafone TV box and find it ok apart from running out of storage now every time I try to install an app from the Play store. I believe they both have 8GB of storage, so I won't be any better off with this right? Also, I despise ads!

  • Can this firestick run a browser and watch free* streaming sites well with no issue or lag?
And can we also run an adblocker?

  • Damn. Literally just bought one of these for $60.

I have an aging cheap Google TV and it's laggy and has frequent crashes so got this to replace the built in OS

  • I've been using the 1st gen Fire Stick 4k for netflix and VLC. Works well, but recently they've started putting full screen ads and generally enshitifying the interface… Probably going to buy an Apple TV now that I've joined the cult.

    Just thought I'd warn people.
