Looking for 2.5" SSD Recommendations

Hi,

I'm looking to get some 2.5" inch SSD recommends

Mobo currently has M.2 slot alread6 currently being used with a SSD and a 2.5" used for HDD.

I'm looking to expand this and add a 2TB - 4TB SSD for faster games and software use.

Is it also worth considering get a M.2 to 2.5" adapter to use this https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/838946 instead? I've heard there's no noticeable increase in performance but if I were to upgrade my computers mobo later on I can directly used the M.2 and this method is slightly cheaper as 2.5" are going for $200+

  • get a M.2 to 2.5" adapter

Will that support NVMe, or just m.2 SATA? You'll need active conversion.

  • Just get a Crucial 2.5 SSD. That brand seems to be the sweet spot in terms of price and performance. I installed a 2TB one in my Xbox One X and its been perfect.

Any spare PCIe slots? can get m.2 adapters to PCIe.

Otherwise, samsung 870 evo or crucial mx500 for 2.5" sata SSD

This, it's the easiest way to add m.2 drives and keep the speeds up.

  • considering get a M.2 to 2.5" adapter to use

You can't convert a M.2 NVMe Drive into SATA.

if your motherboard have spare PCIe Slot (preferably PCIe Gen3 +, with x4 lanes), you can buy PCIe to M.2 NVMe adapters (not PCIe to M.2 SATA adapters mind you) along with that drive.

As for 2.5'' SATA SSDs, the market is getting smaller and the only 2 known good drive is what Caped Baldy mentioned above. Samsung 870 Evo and Crucial MX500.

My local computer guy recommended the Synology SAT5210 range to me. Got the cheapest 480GB for around $380.

I also replaced my nvme boot drive with a Synology SNV3410 400GB.

The Samsung 870 Evo and Crucial MX500 have been nerfed. If you are buying anything within the past two years then you are not getting the same quality and the amount of reviews on datahoarder reddit show a high risk of failure. I think they deliberately changed something to push us onto their enterprise drives.

You can also try the Micron 5400 Pro, but that looked too cheap but was the other recommendation. That would be better than the nerfed version of the MX500. It's the same company apparently, just one is consumer, one is enterprise.
