Mobile for around $350

I previously had an HTC Incredible S, this weekend it met an untimely death. I am looking for a replacement. I use my phone a lot ( I regularly send over 100 sms a day for work and this led to the glass being marked on the screen of my old phone). I am looking to spend around $350. I am wondering what are the best options at the moment and whether I should wait for anything soon. Apart from that it needs to be able to tether as I use wireless hotspot daily. (Note I 100% will not go on a plan and I currently use the optus network)

All suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks for your help guys

  • LG nexus 4? should be $350 for the 8gb version on the google play store.

get a screen protector if you really are damaging your screen just from texting

Yeah Nexus 4 is out tomorrow.
      It's an extra $50 to get the 16Gb ($400) version if 8Gb isn't enough.

No external SD card, and no 4G, but otherwise an incredibly good phone, especially for the price!

  • Thanks that was what I was thinking!!

In reality is 8GB enough storage in your opinion ?

Does anyone know what the turn around on them will be if we order tomorrow ?

Screen protector is available from where ?

For most people who use a phone as a phone and not as a full-time media player, it is enough.

1 or 2 weeks, they have a lot of orders to fulfill after all.

      eBay is your best bet.

    • You'll probably be left with about 4 - 5GB usable space, after the OS is taken into account (I could check, but I'm too lazy :-P)
I would go for the 16GB myself, just so that there's no issue of running out of space. I don't use it all on my N7, but I'm glad it's there.

If you use a wireless hotspot daily, would it be beneficial to stretch your budget and go for a 4G phone instead? I think Motorola just released a 4G phone (Razr M, perhaps?) that might be worth a look into.

Food for thought: if you use your phone so much, then perhaps the glass backing on the Nexus 4 isn't quite practical. It is more likely to break, case or no, if you use it an inordinate amount throughout the day.

    • I'd be looking at the 16Gb..
The 8Gb would be sufficient, but the 16Gb gives that extra breathing space for events like going on a long road trip and loading up the phone with music that I wouldn't normally carry around from day to day.

Screen protectors are ugly and ruin the looks of the screen.
My 26 month old Galaxy S has only the slightest of scratches that are only noticeable from non-viewing angles in the correct light.
It usually lives in a slip case to protect the screen when it's in my pocket.
      Unless you're a complete Klutz, don't bother!

  • Off-topic but if you're sending that many texts you might want to use a computer to write/send them… be a bit easier on your fingers! I think there's probably stand-alone apps that do it but you can also do it via AirDroid (free app) - it exposes a lots of your phone's services as a little 'desktop' in your web browser, including SMS send/receive.

    • If only Google Talk were available here (pretty much the same concept as iMessage, and would fulfill the same function as the aforementioned third party apps).

    • You know what the market needs? more QWERTY slide out Android phones that are high end. Somehow they're not quite popular though.

    • I send them on the fly not usually from my desk. But Yeah I have been intending to get a desktop client

    Missed out :(

    • Keep checking today and for the next few days.. I reckon they may have more stock, but it was selling so fast that they decided to pull it from sale.
Or alternatively, it gets them some free headlines (ie free advertising) if it "sells out" in minutes!
Then once the headlines are published they can re-open sales.

  • Ok my paitence is up with Nexus. Any further advice ?

  • Where can I get the LG nexus 4 for $ 400?

    • Nowhere. It was available for around half an hour before it sold out in November last year. Hasn't been seen since. A lot of people have moved on to other devices now, but there's nothing quite like it at that price point.
