Its in the tiniest writing ever!!!

      • You just need to "zoom and enhance" like they do in the movies.

        • That is what we did!! Took a photo and zoomed in! :)

          • @JimmyF: Checked my wife's card. She does have a (tiny) number on the back. I was able to register my licence on the vicroads app and then use that info to get the licence on the Vic services app. (I was unable to use my licence as identity a few weeks ago with my WWC check as it was looking for a number at the back)

    • Yes I discovered in the MyVicRoads App that I do have a number. But my physical licence doesn't…. It's a little old so they must have added the number in the database…

  • +3

I've had a scan of my licence in my stocard app for a few years now. Only place it hasn't worked has been for chemist scripts and once for a click and collect.
Has been fine for hundreds of click and collects, auspost pickups, even been pulled over by cops twice and they looked at it.

Glad to have an official option now though

No more carrying wallets? You drop your phone, whoops does not work anymore. Whoops battery is flat. This isn't a worry for a card in my wallet.

    • You still have a physical card the website states. But you don’t need to carry it if you also have it on your phone.

“Can I still use my physical licence card if I don’t have a smartphone?

Yes – all licence holders will continue to be issued with a physical card. The digital driver licence doesn’t replace your physical licence and is optional. If you don’t have a smartphone, you’ll still be able to use your physical licence. You will need to renew your licence as usual to ensure it remains current.”

      • -3

So what your saying is theres no use having a digital one cause you still need to carry your physical one "incase" ???

        • Not sure if you struggle with basic comprehension or just having a laugh 😆

But incase it’s the comprehension. You don’t need to carry the physical one.
“ there's also a bit of leniency in Victoria, as you can avoid a fine by bringing your licence to a police station within seven days of failing to produce it on the road.”

          • @Wasabi Ninja: So if you don’t carry a wallet with a physical card and you can’t show your licence to a cop you need to go to a police station within a week anyway.

Sounds inconvenient IMO but I guess some people can just keep their licence in their glove box.

            • @Ghost47: Yep.
I’ve been just using my phone for years. Never had a problem as my car has a charger etc. I’ve actually never lost or damaged a phone to the point it’s not unusable either. Most of them are waterproof these days, I take mine kite surfing and it’s fine.

              • @Wasabi Ninja: Oh so WA have had it for years then?

I don’t see the fuss about it all but then again I’m happy to carry my wallet around. It’s good to have a backup IMO. Maybe I’m being silly carrying around my credit cards and my phone.

                • @Ghost47: No we just show them a pic of our license and they’re happy. Well that’s what I’ve done when I got pulled over last time for speeding. Cop didn’t say anything about it.

    • -1

no idea why you got negged. its all bound to happen….

      • say stupid shit, get negged. Simple

    • +1

No one is making you use this, use your card if you want.

    • +4

What if I drop my wallet, or get pick pocketed? Whoops, don't have it with me anymore.

    • You drop your phone, whoops does not work anymore

      Not everyone is clumsy.

      • Most 20 year olds are.

    • You could drop or lose your wallet too and boom no physical card.

    • No, I am all for going digital. OP stated no more carrying wallets. I do not think this solves not carrying a wallet around. Your phone battery goes flat and now no ID. I do not agree with the original statement of 'no more carrying wallets'.

Personally I have lost my phone a lot more often than my wallet.

    • Who ever lets their phone go flat?

      • Yeah everyone panics when their battery indicator goes red and finding a charger is always the next task.

if anyone like me was wondering wtf is the link :D

  • Welcome to the club Victoria

One issue that we all face is even though the ID is digital you'll still need the physical ID to do certain applications

  • +1

I was excited until I saw I need another government app..

  • +2

I really dont understand the excitement….

    Educate me

    • I tend to not carry my wallet everywhere since I could pay with my phone. I was caught out many times without an ID when trying to pick up an order or a parcel from the post office.
For me, this is not going to happen any more.

  • Yeah…I’m going to unlock my phone and hand it over to a police officer and not expect him/her to go through it, may as well hand over my wallet too and expect it to come back with the same amount of money in it🙄.

    • Most apps require pass codes and Face ID to open personal information. Even if the phone is unlocked.

      • Like phone records and text messages?

        • -2

          Yes

          • +1

@Wasabi Ninja: Ok so police officer demands to see ID so you unlock your phone and bring up the digital ID and give it to the police officer so they can see it clearly. The police officer appears to be scrolling around and clicking stuff. How do I know my text messages and phone records are safe?

            • +1

@OBEY YOUR MASTERS: No. When you open the app with the license you press the side three times and you can’t view anything but that app. (Apple).

To set it up the first time:
Open settings and go to Accessibility
Scroll to the bottom and click Guided access
Turn it on and add a passcode

Now if you want to lock it so no one can open any other app.

Open the app and triple click the home button (iPhone 8 and older + SE) or the side sleep button (iPhone X and newer)

You can either click "Start" in the top right corner to just restrict anyone from leaving the app, or you can draw shapes and add areas where touch will not work.

To leave just put the passcode in.

Of course none of this is necessary since the cops just scan the QR code and won’t need to see anything clearly on your phone.

              • +1

                @Wasabi Ninja:

No. When you open the app with the license you press the side three times and you can’t view anything but that app. (Apple).

Lel. You vastly overestimate the average phone user's tech literacy. Most people don't do anything of that nor are they aware those features exist on their phones.

      • +1

Oh right, that's why they brought in a law in Australia that if you don't unlock your phone you can face up to ten years prison lol.

        • Sounds like you’d have to hand over your phone then champ. But in this instance it’s been made clear you just have to hold your phone so the cops can scan the QR code. They don’t want to touch peoples phones and get hepatitis.

          • +3

@Wasabi Ninja: Mate I don't even offer my phone, just hand over my licence like a good law abiding citizen😇.

I don't know if you know this, but they can't catch hepatitis twice?

            • +2

@scooba: No one hands over their phone or license. The cop just scans the QR code. Welcome to 2024.

Upvoted for the hep twice gag 😀

              • -1

@Wasabi Ninja: You know they brought a law in not to long ago in Australia that if you don't unlock your device for law enforcement you can face up to ten years prison, right?

                Much appreciated lol👍🏻.

                • @scooba: Yeah and this is the same if you have a hard copy license. And has been the law for some time.
Having used a digital license before. Cops don’t search my phone or hold it. 😀😎
                  I appreciate your appreciation. 🤘

                  • @Wasabi Ninja: How is it the same for a physical licence and why do you keep using the yank spelling for licence?

You're very trusting in this very immoral world…

And I appreciate your Simpsons cronato.

                    • @scooba: Because the cops can ask for your phone even if you don’t use the QR code. Chances of them asking to see it are exactly the same and very rare. I say that as someone who’s never been arrested though.

                      • @Wasabi Ninja: The cops can ask you for your phone if you hand over a physical licence?

                        • @scooba: Yes they can. No more or no less if you hold your phone and they scan the QR code. In both circumstances they have to be arresting you.

                          • @Wasabi Ninja: Sure they can ask for the phone but they're not getting it, same goes for my wallet.

                            • @scooba: Same if they scan my qr code 😀
Not sure what you’re getting at. But I’m enjoying the banter

                              • +1

@Wasabi Ninja: No banter intended bud, just exercising my right to privacy If the cops want my phone and wallet they'll have to arrest me and even then they're not getting me to unlock my phone for them.

Also not willing to trust them to snatch the phone out of my hands when they're scanning the QR code, not very trusting am I.

I guess what I'm getting at is this isn't Xhina…

                                • @scooba: You sound a little unstable. I’ve never had anything but positive experiences with the police. They’d never snatch my phone, but even if they did they couldn’t get past the QR screen. My phone locks apps by clicking three times on the side.
Lastly I don’t have anything to hide on my phone. I could understand rock spiders being as defensive as you though.
Thanks for your banter all the same.

                                  • +1

@Wasabi Ninja: So they couldn't get past the QR screen and your phone locks apps by clicking three times on the side and I'm the one that sounds unstable?

Ah the old "I don't have anything to hide" argument lol.

Yes I could understand people with very suggestible "adult anime addictions" locking all their apps.

Again, this isn't the PRC mate.

                                    • @scooba: No they wouldn’t be able to get past without a passcode. Now you sound technically challenged tbh

No argument about having something to hide. I’m just one of the many Aussies that live honestly and cleanly. No worries if you don’t.

                                      • @Wasabi Ninja: You missed the point that I was pointing out that you lock your phone and all your apps down and you're accusing me of being unstable lol.

Yeah I'm technically challenged because I don't own an Android that I'm rooting so I can install some half baked ROM from XDA, good one pal👍🏻.

Oh there's plenty of room for argument about "having something to hide" and saying your "one of the many Aussies that lives honestly and cleanly" makes me think you're not because you're having to tell everyone that and are saying silly things like "No worries if you don't".

I'll leave you with this quote from our mate Edward Snowden in regard to "hiding things", enjoi.

Arguing that you don't care about privacy because you have nothing to hide is no different than saying you don't care about free speech because you have nothing to say. - Edward Snowden

                                        • @scooba: I’m not reading all that dribble. But yes I lock my phone to apps when I give it to young kids that play games on it. I don’t really want them to accidentally purchase something on amazon or anything. It’s a pretty old and basic feature on phones.

                                          • -1

@Wasabi Ninja: Oh dear, it seems I've offended you somehow, maybe it was the PRC quote as you're not responding to it?

Interesting angle with the "locking your apps when you give your phone to young kids", somehow I don't think that'll fly with the police mate??

                                            • @scooba: Not offended at all, I’m just not into your conspiracies haha.
Nothing needs to fly with police. I’ll never have a problem with the police. I’m just not in that kind of lifestyle.
Get a few traffic infringements here and there and they’ve always been respectful.

                                              • -1

@Wasabi Ninja: Ah I know what it is now, it was the “suggestible anime” comment and now you’ll try on the conspiracy theorist trope lol.

Yeah I dunno mate, all this talk including “rock spiders” and “young kids using phones after you’ve locked the apps” from you is a tad concerning.

A few traffic infringements hey, I’m not touching that one as that could free fall into a stereotype I’d prefer not to mention.

                                                • @scooba: If it gets you through the day rock on bloke. 🤘
I’m going for a surf before the sun goes down.

                                                  • -1

@Wasabi Ninja: You're going to upset the Christians if you keep throwing up the cronato like that.

Enjoi your surf, hope the cops aren't waiting for you when you get back lol.

    • Ok, you hand it over if you like.
The rest of us will just show it to them in our hands.

      • -1

If it was designed properly there’d be a QR code the cops scan with their own device to pull up all the information. Doubt they want to touch peoples phones that carry ecoli from people using them on the toilet.

      • Until you're required to hand it over when you're being detained or under arrest, then when you're asked to unlock it due to "suspicious circumstances", just like the cops can now "wand" you for no reason other than "you might be carrying a knife".

But still, in a perfect world your method will work👍🏻.

    • +3

You are never required to give someone control of your device

      https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/licences/digital-driver-lice…

Do I need to hand over my phone when my licence is being checked?

No. If someone needs to check your licence, you don’t need to hand them your phone.Just tilt your screen towards them to show the details on your screen, or the QR code for them to scan. In the myVicRoads app, you can enlarge the code by tapping on it if you need to or pull down to refresh the screen. Always ensure you maintain control of your device and only let the verifier view your details or scan the QR code.

      • +1

Yeah sure, in a perfect world where everyone's devoid of corruption and no one's having a bad day and the police might take them to the shop because they upset them just enough so they want to frame them for being a jerk and not let them off with a warning.

        • +1

The Chopper avatar adds to this post.

    • You don't need to hand them your phone, but you've clearly looked into this in detail before going on an anti-police rant.

    • Whatchu hiding?

    • Yeah I'm scared they'll go laugh at my nudes and mock me and log in to my banking apps and take my money and send messages to my mum and blah blah blah

      • Yes those are the pitfalls when you come from your home town lol.

  • Welcome to the 21st century guys, I bet you feel as elated as QLD did when they went from fake laminated paper licenses to real plastic card licenses

  • As always Victoria is behind in what's going on with the rest of Australia. Too busy gloating about irrelevant things or worshipping scrawny guys in tight shorts chasing each other up and down a field with a big "H "at either end.

    • Victoria land of the IIII at either end.

    • +3

      Sydneysiders and their projection…

  • Welcome to 2019 Victoria.

  • Don't know about Vic or QLD specifically, but in NSW some banks won't accept the Digital License as ID.

    • Victorians still get issued with a physical license. They can leave it in the draw for when they need it at the bank. Which are mostly closing cause no one enters them anymore.

  • +1

unlike QLD’s, VIC’s are not apparently ISO 18013-5 security compliant :(

neither are NSW or SA’s, but theirs were introduced before the standard was published

  • Fantastic, just registered.

I lost my physical licence a month a go. Saves me paying a re-issue my lost card. Will have to wait 5 years before I get my new card when my licence renews.

I rarely carry my wallet for the past few years anyway since I've been able to pay with my phone.

I reported to the cops that I lost my licence. They don't care and won't even note it down unless there's been been fraud.

    • I'd get a new license, maybe helps in fraud prevention.

      • Thought about that, I'm on hold with VicRoads to report the lost licence and also ask if I get a replacement licence will I get a new card number.

      • +1

I called up and confirmed I will get a new card number so just paid for the replacement.

  • I've had a digital ID for years and so far it's worked for me. I've got a scan of my license on my mobile in a encrypted file. For police checks etc, it's not a reqirement in VIC to have a physical license so all good. Probably won't bother with this for now

    • +1

"I've had a digital ID for years and so far it's worked for me. I've got a scan of my license on my mobile in a encrypted file"

Not really, you have scanned photo of your licence which isn't legally accepted unlike digital ID. An encrypted file makes no difference.

But you are very correct for police checks, it's not a requirement in VIC to have a physical license. The police will look up your details using their computer/database if you carry your licence or not.

However if you don't carry your licence (or produce a digital licence), they can request you attend a police station with your physical licence.

      • You're right but on practical grounds for my needs it's either been (incorrectly) accepted e.g at the post office or never been in a situation where i needed a physical card. mostly do online checks etc

  • -6

Lol, of course it's Victoria. Australia's testbed for implementing a Chinese-style surveillance state.

    Never go full retard digital.

    • Wow, astute observation.

Well, except Victoria is lagging behind QLD and NSW in implementing digital licenses.

    • I’ve had it for almost five years in NSW.

      Take your own advice.

  • -1

What happens if your phone is flat, stolen or broken and the police pull you over?

    • +1

You’ve got 7 days to take your license to any police station.

    • Same as when you are not carrying your physical card. You have to go to the cop shop and show them.

    • What happens if your phone is flat, stolen or broken and the police pull you over?

You probably won't get a fine for using your fine while driving.

    • -1

What happens if your wallet is stolen, left at home or the card is broken and the police pull you over?
