  • Digital Driver's Licence?

So last year, living near Ballarat gave me this last year.

    • Yeah the rat was the testing ground for vic for this.

  • fantastic… if you never need to show your licence outside of INSERT_STATE since digital IDs aren't widely accepted at all.

(agree with perons who said they should all work inside whatever "Wallet" app is appropriate - though I suspect that could be a problem if they use unique QR codes every time it displays)

That's just a grumble, they should be - but again it's a mess like the initial situation with vaccination certificates - hopefully more places having them, and people encountering the frustration of NOT being able to use them when expected, will build loud enough complaints that we eventually get digital IDs/licences that work in a universal manner. Though I wonder how they'd feel about forgoing the revenue on those useless "international driving permit" things)

    • Read the fine print mate. They still issue a hard copy license.

      • I know you get both hardcopy amd digital, it isnt that they don't give you a hardcopy that is accepted everywhere, it's that they're all putting out Clayton's IDs so we still need to carry the card in our wallets if we're venturing further than our state's borders.

        • Yep. Digital only at home. I’d take a hard copy license regardless when travelling.

Good to see this thread has created a safe space for anti-police, conspiracy theorists and cookers to link arm in arm. I blame Dan Andrews.

    • +5

How could Dan Andrews do this? Last night he even pooed my pants in my sleep.

  • ugly af app

      Maybe that's just your photo…

    I live in NSW
Haven't carried my wallet in years
    Welcome to 2019 Victoria

You guys are still in 2019? I have some bad news…

Put some cash into wallet just in case …

Cash is King. I still bring my wallet with some cards and cash just in case. Anyone should always bring cash at least $50/$100 just in case something happen. Sometimes I still read some news in Australia that people cannot pay for goods in supermarket or restaurant because of visa/master/bank/Optus/Telstra network problem, lol. People have to find ATM to withdraw cash. Even if the ATM is having network problem, at least people should always have cash …

Imagine you have car accident and/or accidentally your phone is broken on the road. Phone broken, no cash no digital license 😭. Think about that … At least you still have your wallet, right?

Make sure to wrap your wallet in aluminium foil too.

      • And your head while you're at it

  • Can't add a Marine licence hope they fix that soon.

  • Next, put the id on a chip planted on wrist. No need to carrry phone!

    • +1

Yep as I’m getting into ol fart territory and finding I regularly forget mobile, wallet etc and I never thought I’d ever say this..BUT

      Chip me up baby….

      • +4

Trust me with that you will never lost in transit anymore

  • +1

I live in the place they had the trial, signed up, forgot about it completely. All for the option but yet to really see the point unless you've gone out of your way to not have a wallet

  • Has anyone had success in adding their Ambulance Victoria membership? The only option presented to me is to create a new membership, and no option to import existing membership.

  • The driver's license can be accessed via myVicRoads app or added to wallet in Service Victoria app. Which way do you prefer and why?

And we wait for the news of database has been hacked…

    • -1

Do you mean your phone database? It's not like your license details aren't already in government databases, or identity services couldn't already real time check a government service to verify your identity…

    • +1

🤦‍♂️ Your details were already in the Vicroads database. Nothing has changed other than a different way to view it digitally.

    • "we take your privacy and security seriously"

  • Welcome, to the world of tomorrow!

I can see this being eventually useful as the first step of a government run identity verification service for other organisations so I'm not having to take a photo of my license and passport and emailing it off to Barry Plant to be hacked and then available on the dark web forever. If instead during my online rental application I get a .gov popup that I then auth on my phone and all Barry Plant gets is a green tick, that seems like a positive development.

      it probably already is

      • +1

Probably, but still a step in the right direction I think.

Tip for Android users - I've heard stories of police requesting people to hand over their phone so Police can 'verify' your ID back in their vehicle, potentially using the opportunity to snoop your unlocked phone. Android has an 'app pinning' feature that locks you in the app, should you feel comfortable relinquishing your phone in the first place. (Personally, I'd politely refuse)

The cops scan a QR code. There is no need to give them your phone.

  • I am sure that if there is a way to waste money on this development, create a cost overrun in public funds or end up with a public liability cost - then the Victorian Government will find a way to achieve it in rolling this out. No way would I be using this digital version and encouraging the Victorian Government to find more innovative ways to destroy value.

    • But Vicroads is now private so…..

  • Was a simple process to add the lic on VicRoads app.

I also tried using the Service Victoria app option and it resulted into an error right after I submitted my identity details. lol.

    • +1

I started with VicServ app and failed as I didn’t supply the number on the back (which I didn’t have). Vicroads worked, and gave me the number, which I then used to download the licence from ServVic.

      • why do you use Service Victoria? unlike VicRoads, it requires identity check

        • With service vic you can add other id such as digital working with children’s check etc.

Seems half baked. Can't access the DL while offline.. Should be able to add the Digital card into my apple wallet for quick access without needing the internet connection

    • To remedy this you carry the physical drivers license, then you don't need internet.

      • it's been a while since I had to carry a wallet or any physical card for that matter. Physical DL stays in the car glove box permanently…
Moved here (Melbourne) from Sydney and seem to have stepped back into the stone age (technologically). Someone get the labour govt kicked out so the state can move on and catchup to the rest of the world

        • Yes, but thats all money….. money they are spending on Dan's Big Build.

  • This is great! I haven't carried my wallet for months and have had issues occasionally not having my license with me.
