OzBargain's Ideas for a Trailer Mover

Looking for a trailer mover to make it easier to navigate my 8x5 trailer tandem trailer into a smallish turn space which is hard to do with the ute. It is a gravel path, not concrete.

Considering a Trailer Valet but is a costly investment.

I need to be able to get it into the part of the shed and then back out. So something like this from Repco I don't see is very suitable.

Looking for OzBargain's thoughts, ideas, and alternatives on navigating the problem.

Here is a diagram

It's an 8x5 trailer, if you can't back it in, just push it in yourself.

8x5 single axle, sure, its a hell of a lot easier. But Tandem is a little harder.

I am currently doing it myself, but it is a little painful having to push and pull, especially when loaded.

      • Does it need to go in the shed? Can you just move it back a little further than your picture shows and leave it there? Is the fence in front of that bay a boundary fence?

        • Yes. I had it out in the elements beforehand and I would have to unpack all my stuff from it, cover it with a tarp so that it didn't go all rusty. I am using it every weekend, but not during the week. I built the shed extension exactly for storage of the trailer plus some extra shelf space, so it needs to go in there.

  • What's the tow ball weight for the manual move? I saw someone on Reddit repurposed a mobility scooter.

    • +1

Not sure, need to weigh it.

I like the mobility scooter idea! If I had a ride-on mower, that would also be handy! Might be a way to get a ride on, dual purpose - Trailer Mover and Mow the grass……. tax deduction, now that has me thinking!!!!

Was the repurposed mobility scooter the one on the news towing his boat down the main road?

  • a sheet of form ply on the gravel under that Repco dolly might make it easier where needing to turn?
    .

    • +1

Yes, that could work……. but would need to be a big piece of ply….. but yes, that could work.

      • Perhaps put down some cheap paving in the required area? (could even scrounge some up for free from marketplace)

        • +2

Thats a good idea, might look into that!

Its been tempting but the wife doesn't approve.

its easier to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission… just do it.
or take her away for dirty weekend and arrange to have it …. trimmed to the ground while away cause you wont be gettin any for a while after she sees the tree gone

Like @Muzeeb said, thats bloody awesome! And the lights are a nice touch!

      • yea they were done by mate who did all the welding and metal cutting at his work…

    • well. we know who to call when Mad Max becomes reality :)

  • Owner of a cheapie/no name motorised jockey wheel from eBay.

They should be alright for your use case - but you’ll have to find a battery as well, adding to the cost. You’ll just have to treat it gently

I’ve destroyed mine using it to push a 1.2 tonne van, 20m up a slight hill - the aluminium casing has broken where the steering handle attaches, the tyre is worn out after hitting minor ledges in the concrete etc.

Oh well. It's powered vs the Trailer Valet which is manual or requires a drill attachment which is an extra $110 (so going to be like $750 all up delivered). So $400 plus a battery is still going to be a bit of a saving.

      • is that a cordless drill to power it? Good luck with that.

        • Yes. This and it goes via High Range and Low Ranger Gears. Here.

I spoke to a tradie who had one on his trailer this morning and he loves his. He bought his 2nd hand.

          • +1

@geekcohen: $110 for that? Be better to get soneone to weld a bolt on the end and use a standard socket.

The issue you will probably have with this is leverage with the shortness of the handle for turning

Also those tires might just be good for burnouts if its gravel

  • +1

Gravel is going to require some nice wide wheels. Many commerical products are targetted at being on hard surfaces.

Hire a manservant to do this for you. When he's not moving your trailer he can shine your shoes and press your outfits.

  • If you use the van less, maybe change positions?

    • Can't unfortunately. The trailer side is lower in height than the van, please I wouldn't be able to get the van in with the angles. Bad enough with the trailer, will have no change with the Van.

  • Where did the gate on the right lead to? Does it open against the shed?

    • Gate on the fence line or the shed? The gates open as indicated on the diagram

      • Oh, I thought the one on the right was closing off the land to the RHS of the shed. Didn't realise it was a door for the shed itself.

I've bought a Hulk 4x4 HU1810 Trailer Dolly With 10" Rubber Wheels for $115 with eBay plus.

See how it goes on my rock and might modify as per @pharkurnell's build.. At least I have bought the framework for mods.
