It has been a few years since I tried it, but the Yalumba Y series stuff used to be pretty good. The children of the revolution pinot is decent for $10, although it's very light and really a summer red. Plus it's vegan.
I'd probably stick with the cheapo bec hardy deals that pop up regularly on here.

Thanks @freefall101 - there are quite a few mass produced wines in those 44. I'd put our up against most of them everyday of the week. :-)
@jv Try 19 Crimes Shiraz which seems to be rated criminally good by several reviewers. I had bought for a friend who enjoyed it.
