Free Timber Cutting Service with Timber Purchased (in-Store Only) @ Bunnings

1190

Just in case people didn't know about this. If you buy large timber at a Bunnings, you can have it cut at least once for free. As much as I would love to own a track saw, this service has meant I cannot justify another tool to own and store!

I have never been charged for extra cuts but I always go when it is super quiet (7am or close to when they close, keeping in mind the timber section gets fairly understaffed close to closing time). As long as you are friendly and have the measurements and pieces ready to go, usually they don't mind doing multiple rips and getting paid with a thanks mate.

"Does this service have a cost?
Bunnings stores may charge a small fee for timber cutting. The price is:
Timber docking - First two cuts are free, and 50 cents per additional cut
Panels and sheeting - First cut is free and $1 per additional cut."

There is also usually a large bin near the timber saws that have off cuts you can take for free.

Should I also mention that there is very convenient parking in the timber yard that is especially useful when it is raining ;)

      • Before they clock off.

        • In the car park or when they are sampling a cheeky snag from the stand, amiright!? ;P

          P.S I kid…… never interrupt a man(or women) and his snag……

      • Sorry, I only just saw this comment.

I suppose it depends how much you have to cut.

I personally aim for about midday or early afternoon if i can, otherwise no less than 30 minutes before closing if it's only a few cuts/they're not too busy with customers/if you're a bit desperate.

        • So literally their busiest times according to google maps popular times graph, cool.

    • +1

I used to hate that when people came into the deli I worked at as a kid. They'd wait until 5 minutes before closing time and ask for newly sliced ham. We stripped the slicer down an hour before closing as it takes a while to clean. Most would understand and be absolutely fine when we said we couldn't do it, one or two would kick off. Usually the same ones that tried to get us to use the same machine to cut thin slices of cheese (a definite no on that one, no matter when they asked).

  • How much for extra cuts?

    • It's in the deal above;

"Bunnings stores may charge a small fee for timber cutting. The price is:
Timber docking - First two cuts are free, and 50 cents per additional cut
Panels and sheeting - First cut is free and $1 per additional cut.""

  • I remember Bunnings removing the cutting machine from two major WA stores, probably 10 years ago! Are there any stores in WA that even offer this service now?

    • I'm pretty sure the Cannington one has a saw (or did when it opened).

  • What does the bin look like? Also did u mean the place where you can drive in to pick up large timber orders?

If so what time of the day is it usually full of off cuts?

There is also usually a large bin near the timber saws that have off cuts you can take for free.

    • Yes in the timber yard near the saws used by staff in this deal.

The 3 Bunnings I regular have a large rectangle plastic tub about the size of 2 shopping trolleys on a dolly. They are using full up to the rim.

It might just be a per location thing as I'd imagine it's a pain to manage for no profit.

      • Thanks. Might have a look next time i go

      • They welcome you taking them because those bins have to be wheeled out and emptied into a skip manually lol.

        • Nice

  • Curious anyone using the offcuts as firewood?

    • You wouldn't want to. A lot of it would be treated softwood. You should only be burning dry untreated seasoned hardwood.

      • I see thanks

        So treated means like Lacquer?

What is untreated seasoned hardwood btw

        • Treated means anything that is not simply cut down and dried out. You don't want to breathe in smoke from treated wood. You also don't want that in your chimney.

If you are burning it in a firepit or wood heater, go to a place like this: https://g.co/kgs/vrfASjq
They get red box or yellow box gum trees, cut them up, split them and then let them dry out for a year. Perfect burning wood.

Useful when I want to save money (e.g. want 2 x <3m buy 6m and ask them to cut in half instead).

  • There are quite a few posts about Bunnings free/courtesy offering. The initiatives are good but customer experience can be easily destroyed if the staff are not properly trained. I can give you an example what I experienced. Went to Bunnings to do a return for a tool bought from another store, a gentleman titled store specialist looked at the invoice then immediately asked me to go back to the store where I purchased it. I advised him to double check the return policy but very unwilling to do so. After that, I’d like to do price beat with Amazon for something and this gentleman again just immediately rejected it said they don’t PB online store/Amazon. Again, I suggested him to bring the supervisor in as I have done Amazon PB many times both in store and Email. And still denied to check T&Cs and unwillingly to ask for help. This caused half an hour “communication”. From experience I’d call him arrogant but I’d still believe he’s just making his living and don’t want make mistakes hence just rejects anything that he is not familiar with. All these T&Cs are written black and white, if I’ve not checked the T&Cs of return and PB, I’d have gone back and forth half a day to get what I need sorted although these are all standard offerings.

    • I've had similar experiences. Now I'll just thank them for their time and try someone else.

  • It's super quiet at 7am? I thought there would still be plenty of tradies getting supplies so I always avoid anytime before mid morning. Problem with going late is the loading area will probably be closed. Last time I needed a few cuts I went late and I had to trolley the wood through the length of the store and down the escalator like an idiot lol. The staff were excellent though.

  • I've had 30+ cuts for free at times. It really just depends who you get!

  • Last time we tried to make use of the service, they were short of staff and handed us a hand saw. Thankfully it was just one piece of timber….

  • Used this a few times before at my local, never been charged but I guess it depends who you get.

  • I actually tried this the other week, the floor staff were happy to help out but the manager told them off and said if I wanted it cut I could buy a saw.
    Indooroopilly Bunnings

    • fwiw mt gravatt (closer to creek road) no issues. it is one of the bigger bunnings though i guess. Not as huge as cannon hill. Havent been to the indro one.

    • No issues at Rocklea which is not too far from Indro.

Thinking about it……Does Indro have a saw? It's one of the smallest Bunnings with limited range.

      • It does, the floor staff were some of the most helpful I have dealt with. Just the manager was not having it. Apparently not many of them like that manager though. Rocklea is closer to me but was going past Indro bunnings at the time

  • i did this, and the cut is really rough. i needed them to slice 1 big board a few times to get a lot of wall shelves, and they chipped the hell out of all the shelves. i was better off cutting it myself at home.

  • Pro Ozbargin tip: Buy one piece at a time to get it cut to size

  • Needed to cut skirting boards down to fit on the car and they wouldn't help (can't remember the reason) or let me use the machine myself. They offered to let me use a handsaw instead. That was painful.

  • It’s completely store dependent. In Clyde North store, they have literally written the price to cut timber. Not free at all even just one cut.

Hoppers crossing, had it free always.

  • I recently needed to get some sleepers cut and they didn't offer first cut free, and were quite reluctant to want to cut at all. So I think it's store dependent!

    • Probably not too good for the shop person making the cut in the enclosed space with arsenic in the wood.

  • I sometimes carry a circular saw + speed square if in need to make a quick cut before putting it into the car.

Don't buy plywood sheets from bunnings. They've gone with a really cheap/terrible supplier and the quality just isn't there, despite what their rating suggests.

Goto a timber shop for plywood!

    • Price is the determining factor. Unfortunately, I think most will still go to Bunnings for price and convenience.

  • +3

Mitre 10, most places will do it if you ask nicely

    • Came here to say this, I usually get a few cuts done at Mitre 10 and never had an issue

  • Worth updating the post with more specifics. Hopefully a Bunnings employee can chime in with more detail, but I've found the following:

    • they won't cut engineered timber panels (the ones made of many smaller planks combined into a benchtop for example)

    • minimum material on each side of the saw is 400mm (at my local, at least).

Both of these are for safety reasons. there may be more.

    • A few years ago, when I knew less about diy (I'm still learning), I once had a MDF panel cut to about 300mm. I have since learned that MDF is not really safe to be cutting like that in general (not just at Bunnings)

      • +1

Cutting mdf is fine, just use a fine tooth blade. Higher number of teeth, and let the tool do the work. Don’t force it through.

    • Can't be bothered updating. It's clear there is no strict policy. Just hope that everyone is nice about it and get what they can get.

      • I mean I'm pretty sure Bunnings would have WHS compliance measures in place. Best to just let people know to call their local store if they are planning to rely on the service. Potentially saves people a lot of headaches.

  • last time I had to get 20 timbers 3 cut each, the lady was nice enough to help me load the trolley with all the long timbers, then she said might have to charge me extra cause of so many cuts, I asked how much, she just pulled a number out of her… When I went over to pay, cause she wasn't there, the guy didn't charge me any extra.

  • Will they cut it? yes.
Will it be a clean cut? No
Wear gloves, it will be splintered to hell.
Just be prepared to sand it down.

    • +1

Hmm! the cuts i’d done for pine or plywood have been clean cuts and were better in shape than factory edge. May be worn out blade or guy is new at workshop?

  • If you buy large timber at a Bunnings, you can have it cut at least once for free

Wym large order? As i’ve done it for single items as well. The only thing they don’t cut are mdf due to dust

  • Your better buying from specialised stores anyway. You can also get free cuts at Canterbury Timber & Building Supplies.

  • The price of timber is astronomical though!

  • I do wonder if this is site specific?

It really seems lucky dip if you get charged or not, or if they can even cut whatever you have.

I’ve had them cutt mdf and been charged 1 buck a cutt. Had them cutt some cabinet shelving. I’ve also had it free or been told they don’t have services available etc.

They have a really nice automated saw at one of the Bunnings I go to you give them the measurements and the computer controlled saw cuts it precisely, worth it for the 2 bucks. Easier then me digging tools out of the shed.
