Before you buy a dashcam, watch this video Basically they are like mattresses. There's 2-3 variants rebadged into lots of brands.
Whatever dashcam you get, make sure it has the new Sony Starvis 2 sensor. It makes world of a difference when it comes to number plate readability at night.
Don’t be confused with last year’s model, the non-plus one, with an older sensor.
Blackvue DR970X PLUS is the one that came out a few months ago, with the STARVIS 2 sensor (but also the only major upgrade) - on sale at Autobarn for $899, it’s not the best price, but better than nothing if you need one ASAP.
The plus one they sell it with useless LTE module…

At this price range. Anyone considering using a Insta360 X3 or X4?
I guess this is a great price but I am really sick of Blackvue's WIFI function. My DR900S2 failed just right after 2.5 years of purchase. The 750 is starting to fail, it kept spamming system restarts.
One gripe with it is the Blackvue app. I cannot get into the app via wifi to download videos. After 2 models from Blackvue, I just moved to Thinkware.
It is three years warranty and auto blackbox service is pretty good.
If I were in the market for a camera I would steal this from your car. $600+ for a dashcam?
I’m waiting for Viofo 229 Pro to go on sale. That has Sony Starvis ll
Same here, or the VIOFO A229 Plus - either will suit me fine.
I've been a loyal Blackvue owner in a few cars now but their current pricing just under $1k is ridiculous to me… after watching/reading various reviews, I've concluded the A229 Pro (or Plus) will be as good as or better than the Blackvue 970X/X+ for a much cheaper price in my use case since I have no interest in LTE/cloud access. So now to wait for the Viofo to have a half decent sale since the current promotions look pretty lame.
Only thing I will give Blackvue some credit for is it's good you don't need to buy a Power Magic Pro kit anymore since it can be hardwired out of the box… but it's still priced way too high and given it's no longer the best in camera/video quality, I don't see the value. I'm also intrigued by the Viofo's having a screen although not sure exactly how much use I'd get out of it.
I have the same one and it's terrible at night because of lack of HDR. Sometimes you can't even read plate pf a car right in front as headlight reflection makes it overexposed.
The Plus version of it is slightly better I noticed from some YouTube videos.
