I understand the value of learning these skillsets but how are LinkedIn/Coursera certs perceived in the real world? Are they well-regarded or do they come across more like participation stickers?

I'm going to show my middle-aged IT professional bias, but as a professional "certification" I don't imagine they hold much weight. Certainly, learning via these means is beneficial for growing your knowledge base on a topic and post the badge you receive at the end to your LinkedIn stream, but I wouldn't be walking into an interview based on "I got a Gen. AI certification from LinkedIn" (even if it is co-sponsored by Microsoft). I think these are great gateway courses to get introduced to a topic and building your knowledge base.

I would suggest that if you can earn a "badge" or "certificate" from watching a few online videos and passing an uncontrolled quiz at the end then I wouldn't value the achievement much. In contrast if you need to sit an exam in controlled conditions at the end to earn a certification, then it shows a quantifiable knowledge/ability.

      Example:
      - this is a badge from an IBM course linked from Coursera: https://www.ibm.com/training/badge/generative-ai-fundamental…
      - this is a certification from IBM: https://www.ibm.com/training/certification/ibm-certified-spe…
(and the learning path leading to that certification exam: https://www.ibm.com/training/learning-path/ibm-ai-enterprise…)

…but I'm a middle-aged SAP consultant. Technology has changed and having a number of these LinkedIn badges still puts you above the next person who doesn't (unless they have proven experience in the subject matter!).

    • Coursera and edX have some courses partnered with Australian universities. Not sure about LinkedIn though.

    • Not much… good to get some exposure and hands on experience for your personal knowledge. I’ve checked with couple if recruiters as well and said they wouldn’t bother.
The proper online degrees setup through edx / coursera have somewhat higher weight than these as they’re well structured and conducted through partnerships with unis.

In the real world they don't mean squat. Actually certification from Redhat, AWS, Azure, SAP, Cisco etc have real world value because they are typically somewhat difficult and require an exam to get, but even then none are likely to land you a job alone.

These watch some videos and then post on LinkedIn "I'm pleased to announce I've now earnt my advanced AI prompt writing certificate from generic website.com" are worthless.

There are useful cases for the study, but the badges don't mean squat.

    • Realistically, it shows that you’re a ‘continuous learner’. Other than that, not much if you can’t back it up in an interview
