An alternative to a dedicated balance bike is to simply remove the pedals off their bike .
I pushed my son from one side of the park to the other at age 4 and I replaced the pedals after about 3 Hrs spread out over a couple of weekends .
Fair idea, but for $36-odd bucks this is a nice lightweight option for the youngun… notice how heavy the entry level kids bikes are?

These are the best idea for learning to ride. Training wheels should be banned because they only teach bad habits. Better than removing pedals off their bike because they are lighter and the seat can be made lower.
Last year 1-day were selling these for $39 + delivery.

They are OK for toddlers who would otherwise be on a tricycle.
When my 4yo looked ready to learn, I just removed the "training" wheels and the pedals. After a few short sessions (10 mins max before it got too much) he had got the balance idea, so the pedals went back on, and off he goes.
Buying a special balance bike for less than an hour's use seeems a bit extravegant.
