Telstra Prepaid $30 Nano SIM Starter Kit for $10 @ DickSmith

550

I just noticed on the DickSmith's website, Telstra $30 Starter Kit Nano SIM down to $10.
Great offer if you just got the new iPhone 5 or iPad Mini
Unsure when the offer ends
Click & Collect Available

Deal doesn't seem to include Standard and Micro SIMs but as suggested by @kspec, you can use an adapter.

EDIT: Due to popular demand for this product, delivery is no longer available, however you can still buy in store, but check store stock first to save time, just incase it's not available at your local store.

    • I bought 5. Had no problems.

  • -1

The description shows it's a micro sim card.

    • +3

Doesnt matter wat sim, just use adapter!!

      • +6

Actually you don't even need an adaptor. Sim swap is free at Telstra shops.

    • Sorry, the description shows it's valid for both micro and nano sim cards.

  • Great deal. Bought some. Thanks.

  • so how much data do you get?

    • +1

3gb if use on ipad and activated over the fone

  • Does the credit expires in 30 days?

  • Depends on the plan you select, can be up to 6 months / 180 days

read this, scroll down a bit to see the plans

    Got 2 thanks

  • +2

The Telstra site is a touch confusing as all I can find is 700MB of data for a $30 recharge on a data plan…Can anyone confirm that it's definitely 3GB over 30 days?

    • +3

3GB only applies if u activate it over the phone as an ipad sim.. If u use on a different device instead of the ipad it will detect and cancel ur 3gb..

  • So the adapter is included in each kit?

    • No - but you can buy one ($1 at DealExtreme or $10 at DicksSmith ?) or make one up if you have a cutter. Cut one and use the already punched sim card as adapter. I put a sticky tape on the back and slot it in and it works for the last 15 days now, still another 15 days to go.

  • 2 x $10 coming your way DSE TLS I hope my money isn't too good for you. got the $1/ eBay adapter

  • Can anyone confirm if the 3GB with 30 days expiry is only for iPad or for other tablets or mobile broadband devices as well? If non-iPad devices will only get 700MB expires in 30 days?

    • +2

I thought all you had to do was "say" you want to activate for an iPad.
How can Telstra detect that you don't have an iPad, unless you try to make a phone call.

      • Easily, IMEI number. You will be caught quick.

        • I used mine in the ZTE MF91 and so far it is still good.

        • @Z28 So you are getting 3gb and 30 days expiry? Please let me know because I want it in my ZTE MF91 too but if only getting 700mb isn't enough for a month usage

        • +1

Yes, 3gb and 30 days expiry using ZTE MF91. Just call 1258887 and ask for the Ipad plan. Have your drivers license + sim serial (from the back of the starter kit packet) ready. Very easy process. Did for the first time tonight.

        • @Cheap Steve, thanks! Ordered 5 just before the deal expired.

        • where do you get the ZTE MF91?
          I assume it's not 4G.

        • @phoebus it is 4G

        • is 4G = want.
How to get the ZTE MF91 for bargain price?

        • I got it from the DSE pricing error $169 for ZTE MF91 modem + $180 prepaid voucher. Soz, not sure where else has a deal as good as this.

  • I think you can just go to Telstra Store and ask them to replace a regular sim card to you.

    • Yes - so long as its a Telstra owned store not a licensed (franchised) store.

      • +3

For people who have not done this, be aware that it is not as easy as the above comments imply.

I have just been through this procedure and found it painful.
A company-owned Telstra store will indeed just give you an unactivated SIM card of the size you request - nice of them to do that - so far so good. But they don't want to know about your starter kit.

You must activate the starter kit using the (wrong-sized) SIM that came with it; the credit and the characteristics of the starter kit are tied to the original SIM, and you can't transfer that to the replacement, dead SIM, at activation time.

Then you have to wait for the starter kit to activate on the wrong SIM. This can take hours. I happened to choose a weekend where Telstra's brilliant accounts system was down for the entire weekend. And, unless you have a mobile device that will accept the original, wrong-sized SIM, you will not know whether it is activated or not.

Then you have to talk to Telstra customer service to swap the SIMs. You can phone them - good luck with that. Many non-Telstra phone services can NOT make a call to Telstra's strange 1258887 contact number, which only works from Telstra lines or Telstra mobiles. There are Whirlpool forum threads about the trouble these unique Telstra 125 numbers cause.

Or you can use the Telstra live chat online on the web site, the option I choose because I could not find a phone which could call the Telstra number. You talk to an operator for quite a long time. I found the chat operator helpful once I had found the right one. At the beginning of the chat, you have to type in the subject of your query, get a chat operator, then be asked again what you want, and told that you will be transferred to another and then another. (I don't know why they bother to ask the first time if they don't act on what you say.)
From then on, I was on "chat hold" for about 20 minutes after typing in the ID numbers of the old and new SIM cards, then waiting for the operator who said it always just takes this long.

Finally the operator told me the SIM swap was ordered, and that it would take up to 24 hours to be processed. Then the joy of waiting to find out if I have been told the correct information or not.

I was - from the end of the chat session, it took fully 20 (twenty) hours to deactivate the starter SIM from the pack and then activate the correct-sized SIM from the Telstra shop, including about an hour just before the end when both SIMs were dead.

Thus burned uselessly the first day+ of the 30-day period, and a lot of my wasted time checking.
I would not choose to do this again.

So yes, it can be done, but people who say "just swap the SIM at a Telstra shop" are not giving the full story.

  • so if i activate one of these as a data only sim, am i still able to subscribe to the mobile foxtel?

  • Thanks! Ordered 5 for in-store pick up. $50 for $150 credit will last me all the way to March.

    • Just hope they don't have a short expiry date. Last time I ordered a $2 Woolworths sim from DSE on 28/8 the expiry was 1/9. Although I had a Telstra sim lying around for a few years without activating it but it was still good when I did activate it.

      • I activated my prepaid service on long life offer which expires Sept 2013, then switched my offer to Simplicity, so when I activate these cards I can use CreditMe2U over the next few days and still retain my Sept 2013 expiry. :)

        • I think he meant the SIM expiry printed on the back of the starter pack, not the credit expiry which depends on the offer selected once activated.

        • +1

Bought one yesterday in store and thought the $10 was a pricing error do walked out as fast as I could :) Expiry on this one is Sept 2015 so plenty of time to use them. Just grabbed 5 more!

        • Hi, please could you share how do you get 6 months long life plan and yet able to be on the simplicity plan?

          Thanks

      • Got mine from DSE with Sept 2015 expiry. Now to carefully cut the card into a normal sim card. To get 6 months and Simplicity just activate as Long Life then transfer to Simplicity plan.

  • are the sim cards preloaded with the $30? Or can I buy 5 packs and recharge 5 times on one simcard?

    • The $30 credit is associated to each individual SIM. But you can always use creditme2u to transfer credit from one account to another.

    • Since its a starter kit I would think you can not use the credit to charge another starter kit but will need to cancel one then activate another every month, bit of a pain but worth $20 (actually more since recharge costs $20 and you only get 1gb of downloads on iPad-not sure how it works for phones)

      • Use the $30 credit to buy a data plus pack if using it on a mobile (phone) offer.

  • My order says 'backordered' even though it still appears to have stock online.

    Whats the go with that?

    • OzBargained.

  • Like the fact that it is free delivery

  • Thanks op.. Bought 4 today.. Click & Collected

  • Thanks OP!
    Bought 5!

    • I was asked for ID in store, and my receipt shows my address from my drivers licence. Also, they would only let me buy one, but were cool if I came back another day =/

      • LOL, come back another day? 24 hrs cool down period? What kind of joke! click and collect max qty is 5. Tell the DSE staff to lookup its website before it sets its own stupid in store policy. "Talk to the Texidiot" instead of "Talk to the Texpert".

      • When he said come back another day, he probably meant "Please go away so I may buy all these for myself and they will be sold out tomorrow"

  • Yeah I bought the 5 online as well. But I pass by often so I may go again and try again if there are other staff at the counter.

  • I bought 5 yesterday and paid $50. Today received my invoice and shipment notification for 3!!! Wtf???

Anybody received their invoice for 5 or more?

    • just an update. got the second invoice for the remaining 2 kits today.

  • I bought 2 a few hours after the deal was posted on here and my order status is on backorder now and will be shipped when available.

    • Haha that is why I chosed click and collect. Even with free delivery I'll get mine first and anytime I want from my local DSE.

    • 24hrs

  • I didn't bother ordering online, just dropped into a local Dickie and order a few.

  • Gave job to me postie - in the hands within 72 hours, 1/2hr saved for me, bonus.

  • It appears dicksmith has been ozbargained, home delivery no longer available due to out of stock.

  • Got mine tuesday,

Perth metro via startrack? or whatever they are called

  • has anyone tried to add the 30bucks from a 2nd starter kit into their own telstra account?

I asked in store, and they mentioned you can only transfer $10 per day from credit4u
once i get another 3 to make up 6 kits.. i'm going to call and see if they let me use the 180 credit
and setup the 365 day 12gig account.

i'd hate to have to do this 18 days in a row.. not sure if i'll be able to do it everyday..
though paying only 60 for 180buck account is good still..

    cheers.

  • bought one today at broadway. asked for my ID, lucky i bring one

  • Purchased one at Dick Smith today. They would only sell me one.
I took the receipt and went over to JB-HiFi - they would not price match it.
I went to K-Mart and they price matched the SIM (they only had one left).
    Here's the receipt:
