Toshiba AT270 7.67" Quad-Core 16GB Tablet $249 + Shipping ($12.85+ or $0 Pickup) from BCC in Vic

530

If you're looking for an alternative to the Nexus 7, the Toshiba AT270 Excite 7.7 is a great look at the same price. Differentiating factors are that it has a faster processor (1.6 VS 1.2 Ghz), 5MP rear camera and microSD slot. However, it's only got Android 4.0.

Comparison on GSM arena:

I can't vouch for BCC Computers as I've never bought it from them, but there is a rep on Ozbargain and they have physical stores in Victoria, so pickup is an option.

  • Only 0.3"m thick,very thin!

  • great price. But i already got my ipad 4, so im not going to get this one.
    Good find.

  • Tegra 3 & AMOLED drool

    • Exandable memory and camera are also positives. I guess the negative is the slightly lower PPI and possibly lack of software upgrades.

      • +3

        Definitely lack of OS upgrade.

      • Supports expandable memory up to 128GB

  • +4

Good price, problem is just bought a Nexus 10. Software update to Jelly Bean may take a while, my old Samsung 8.9 still stuck with 3.2 Honeycomb, that is why buying Nexus and would not consider non-nexus tablets in future.

  • Any JB yet?

  • since it got 3g function, can we used it like a phone as Samsung galaxy tab 7?

  • +1

Read that as the unit was free if you picked it up. Lol

    • Ok, edited brackets to make it more readable.

  • Does this model actually have 3G? Doesn't appear so.

    • No. That's the AT275 which has full phone specs.

  • Makes a great traveller with the included GPS.

  • So tempted because of amoled and quad core tegra. But lack of dev love (not rootable yet , no dev threads on xda) and potential lack of updates (toshiba) are putting me off.

  • Does it support USB host On-The-Go?

    • +1

It should. Most ICS tablets do. This one has a Micro USB slot so you'll probably need a micro USB to OTG cable.

  • i think it is a good deal as the RRP/MRP is 500. 500 is way too expensive. What surprised me is it has usb port :D

  • I was so tempted until knowing that the 3G Toshiba Excite AT275 was selling in the USA for $299 in mid September this year. Link http://slickdeals.net/f/5227768-Toshiba-AT275-T16-7-7-Excite….

i bought the toshiba excite 13.3 for $399 its massive and the best for movies, its only 1600x900 but eh for the price is great! this one isnt that good imo, but depends on what your doing… mines quad core + 1.. and does 1080P bluray rips that are 15gb with out any sweat, and also plays DTS sound, but only in some players,.. no stutering, its really great!

    thumbs up!

    • This is also quadcore +1

    • Where did you pick the 13.3 Excite up for $399?

  • this or nexus 7?

    • +2

This has better build quality (Aluminium case) and a Micro SD slot.

      Negatives: no Jellybean.

      • +1

I think the micro SD card slot is a major Plus

    • Definitely nexus 7.

android 4.0 vs 4.2. And this will be stuck on 4.0 forever pretty much, while nexus 7 will get 5.0 and 5.1/6.0 as well.

The nexus 7 has a great community online as well due to the amount sold.

And lastly, you'll find that lots of developers actually test their games and apps on Nexus 7 nowadays, so they'll work well. Whereas with this one you might have some issues here and there (yes i know it's tegra 3 as well, still).

    • +2

this!.. due to the well documented poor build quality and reliability of the nexus. The nexus may never survive long enough to be around for Android 5.0 updates

  • +4

Won't stay excited for too long after a year later when all nexus tablets are on Android 5 or 6 but yours is stuck with 4.0

    • +4

Oh to be as prescient as you, and know what the tablet market will look like in 12 months.

I am still using my 286 PC, because I am constantly putting off buying something new - knowing the next breakthrough is just around the corner.

      • +1

The point is that Nexus 7 will also be running the latest Android OS in 12 months - this thing won't…

        • -1

…unless Google decides they want to sell more new tabs then by witholding a port of the new OS to the older tabs???

        • -1

Motorola is owned by Google now and Xoom is getting JB.

        • +2

Well it really depends on your use for the tab. Would someone just browsing the web and watching movies really care for lime pie? Probably not.

Would they appreciate the better screen and associated hardware like microsd? Definitely.

        • …unless Google decides they want to sell more new tabs then by witholding a port of the new OS to the older tabs???

Except Google is largely uninterested in revenue from physical stock, and their history with phones would indicate that they are unlikely to deliberately withhold updates.

        • Call me a cynic, but I always worry when a company selling hardware says they're not actually interested in profit from that hardware…the obvious question then becomes why are they even selling it at all?

Only time will tell I suppose…

    • +2

But…. thats double the price??? I dont get what you mean.

    • +8

      You're comparing a $250 7" Android tablet to a $500 10" iOS tablet.
      Hooray for logic!

    • +5

      Relax guys he's trolling.

    • How much to cross the bridge?

  • +1

For people wondering about the screen size coinciding with the Samsung GT7.7 - this has the identical RGB Super AMOLED 'Plus' screen. Samsung just made a point of preventing Toshiba from using the 'Plus' designation in their specs and promotion for the tab.
At any similar price the GT7.7 is gone. If you want a large screen with candy colours and syrupy Amoled black grab one of these while you can.

  • +2

How is ipad 4 comparable? You can't hold 10 inch tablet with one hand or fit it in your pocket. 10 inch tablets are too big for portability, they aren't comparable with 7 inch tablets. It all comes down how you want to use your tablet, if you want something to take with you everywhere, then 7 inch tablets are nice, if you don't care about carrying it everywhere and just use it at home then 10 inch could be good for you. Personally I'd rather just use my netbook or laptop instead of a 10 inch tablet, so won't consider any of the 10 inch tablets until they reach a level that can completely replace my laptop, so far neither apple or android has made a device that can perform or offer the same levels of application that you can use on a simple notebook. At the end of the day, its horses for courses, you get the device that will suit your needs the best..

As for this device, looks like excellent alternative to the nexus 7, its a pity about the lack of dev support seems to be a big downer for some. Another big negative is the lack of latest updates for android, this is a huge reason I personally went for the nexus 7 over other devices. The screen is probably a personal preference thing, some people like amoled, others don't, I find that it tends to hurt my eyes very quickly. The advantages of having expandable memory and hdmi are huge selling points over the nexus 7, lack of hdmi is something that disappoints me about the 7. So a few things to weigh up for people considering this, its nice to see some alternatives to the n7 with similar or slightly better specs around the $250 mark now. :)

  • I was wondering if anyone had dealings with bcccomputers before?? Thanks

  • Fantastic price for decent specs.

Gotta love AMOLED for movie watching. If I didn't have the Samsung 7.7 i'd be all over this.

  • +2

    Thanks Guys

Currently we only have 5 on hand right now 13:20 (because christmas) and another 10~20 is on the way.
For your connivence better call our stores before pick up.

And yes we start our business since 1996, but we are new to internet and OZ bargain.

Ask me anything or tell me what particular model you like, and we may will have some special deals for you guys.

    • +1

We also have some AT300 which has 10" screen and quad-core,

anyone interested if we put a deal on it ?

      • Sure how whats the best you can do? (bearing in mind the latest galaxy tab 2 deals) :)

        • Ha, saw that $299 deal, but that's a Tegra2 dual-core one right
          so what about $50 extra for a Tegra3 quad-core tablets? ;)

          i'll work that out tomorrow

      • yes please

      • Hi rep,

I personally prefer 7inch size tablet, could you do a special deal on the AT270 as well to make it more competitive than Nexus7?

        Cheers,

    • which store has stock? Cheltenham? Is it open today, until what time?

      • Cheltenham and Knox, until 4pm.

        03 9501 1888 Cheltenham
        03 9800 3474 Knox

    • Can you please confirm that this stock total takes into account the orders made online? I ordered one this morning its still showing as processing? I ordered with express delivery as i wont it pretty quick.

    • +1

Like to see the 3g version of this toshiba for up to the $399 price point of the Nexus 32gb

      • I would also like this!

  • can you post to 3122? Because i could not find any store near to my place.

    • Richmond?
      No problem cheers

  • would Nexus 7 owners agree this is (possibly) better for movie watching?

    • Yes because of the bigger screen and arguably better screen type, AMOLED

  • +1

    There's cons and pro's to both types…
I personally found AMOLED strain my eyes a lot more than ips lcd screen. AMOLED offers more vibrant colours and true blacks, while ips lcd has more realistic life like colours. Ips has better viewing angles, but only marginally so no big loss there. AMOLED panels lifespan isn't as long as ips lcd. It comes down to personal preference, some people prefer AMOLED while others prefer ips, it isn't clear cut.

    • +1

yes and some companies market AMOLED as a suprior screen than ips to lure customers who don't really know the difference.

      • Agree. I own a G7.7" and New iPad, couldn't really see the different btw IPS and Super AMOLED except for the New iPad has higher resolution thanks to the retina display. LOL, maybe something wrong with my eyes, I couldn't also see the diff btw my Dell Ultra Sharp IPS monitor and my bro's normal LED monitor.

        • +2

Time to get your eyes tested.

  • Seems to be a few mixed reviews around regarding the charging via USB. Is anyone able to clarify if this unit can be charged via USB.
Been waiting for a Samsung 7.7" special, however this has grabbed my attention.

    • OK got it now, it charges via USB by the proprietary connector, not via the MicroUSB connector. So in other words you have to buy from Toshiba if you want to have an extra cable lying around at work.

      • there are 3rd party motorola excite accessories on ebay. if it uses the same proprietary cable then it would not bw that hard to find

        • Nothing Motorola matches. Different cable completely

        • I meant toshiba… looks like we are going to have a hard time finding accessories for this.

  • Just called Cheltenham, they are out of stock now. (FYI)

  • I don't suppose anyone knows anything about the online orders? I processed an order yesterday via guest checkout, but didn't get any e-mail receipt or anything; checked my spam folder, nothing there either… not sure if my e-mail account has issues receiving or if it's normal not to receive any order received notice from BCC…?

    • Same here, I ordered only an hour ago, but no email. I also did a guest checkout.

      • hi Daniel
not quite sure why, invoice should be sent out automatically .
but i can see all your orders from our backend,
        we will re-send your invoice.

        • Hi Rep,
Can you confirm if you still have stock of this or are waiting for new stock to come it? Thanks.

        • +1 - Will the Cheltenham Store get more stock?

        • Hi
Yes, but if you can put an order online to let us know that will be great
(using bank transfer to check out so you dont have to pay until pick up in store)

we can fullfil all the orders by last night, orders been placed this morning probably have to wait until late this week
          i'll keep updating.

In case some customers didn't receive our invoice, i'll resend it manually tonight

          cheers

        • if I buy it today, will it arrive in Melb CBD before 22nd Dec? because I'm going overseas at that date so I kinda need it before that date.

          thank you.

        • Ok thanks for the update.

I would like to order online for delivery. However, you said it is out of stock until 'probably' end of this week. Maybe or maybe not. However, FYI your site still has it as 'in stock' as of right now.
On this basis, I would rather wait til it is in stock again just in case you have issues in getting more in stock. Thanks.

        • @yogiisw Our new stock is expected this week. It will be there before the 22nd.

        • If i can get one before 19th, i m going to order. Can you confirm?

        • Personally I think that it will easily make it by the 19th. Just incase, check back on on Wednesday and if it's not in stock, check back on Friday afternoon. Thanks.

        • Hi Rep,

Does your invoice contain separate amount and lines for GST?

I m asking because i bought Nexus 7 from EB Games and returned same time because their invoice did not have GST amount mentioned in invoice.

          Thanks

        • HI Rep

I didnt get an email confirming the order too, order number #196. Can you please resend me an invoice and also can you confirm an estimated time of dispatch?

          Thanks

          Paul

        • @Paul
We are at the stage of confirming information, after this your good should be send out no late than Wednesday.

          @cniminc
We can make it happen for you, please contact [email protected]

        • Thanks Rep, i'll happily wait for my confirmation of dispatch email today :)

    • Great, have now received my invoice, for pick-up @ the Knox store, thanks - now just to receive notice of order fulfilment! :)

  • I didnt get an email confirmation as well. When is the expected shipping date?

  • which shipping method should I choose? the express one?

    Edit:
Bought it with express delivery, havent got any email about invoice.

    • I think they are emailing the invoice manually. I received mine last night

      • Yeap, I got mine last night too.

        • yeah that's true, got it this morning and it's all good, he even say if it's not arrived on time, they will deliver it manually to my apartment, such a nice guy.

  • I almost ordered it last night but wanted to be sure about the ETA and decided to give them a call. Just spoke with a guy from BCC store in Geelong West and he tells me they are out of stock atm & in negotiations with Toshiba. I see a lot of people have ordered it online and looks like they're getting it fast enough. I'm wondering if I should go ahead and order it, BCC Rep can you help me out here plz?

    • I think when people were saying they got theirs "last night" they were more referring to the invoices; as yet, I'm unaware that anyone that's ordered online has received their actual units yet…?

      • Yeah, talking about invoices arrived. Rep mentioned somewhere above that they are expecting stock by mid-week and we can hopefully recieve the items by end of the week (fingers crossed)

It was also mentioned somewhere that all the current online orders were able to be honored.

    Hi Guys
The first batch has been sent out this morning, we are still waiting for more to come(expected friday).

Good job OP, you are keep updating us about orders.

    • In lieu of e-mail order updates, thanks for the update here nameless BCC rep! Does that first shipment correspond to those ordered on Sunday? And does it include orders for store pickup (i.e. at Knox)…? I know I'll find out soon enough either way, but the anticipation is killer :P

      • Yeah, was wondering the same thing, Monday morning order. Does that put me in the first batch…

Just wondering if BCC would consider bulk ordering the HDMI dock, Im sure there would be a few people ording this unit that would also like the dock.

Looks like its going to cost 100+ for single order.

    • I hope mine was on that stack :o

  • +1

I pulled the trigger and placed an order for one of these this afternoon. Toshiba may not ever release an update to Jelly Bean or any future variety of Android but for this spec at this price I think it's a better deal than the much touted Nexus 7. The screen quality, build quality and the ability to add an SD card for extra storage won me over. Merry Christmas to me. The only bit of the buying process that was confusing were the various postage options. Being new to Australia I have no idea what the benefits were of going with AusPost as opposed to flat rate shipping, or what's insured and what isn't. In the end I plumped for the basic AusPost offering.
