PS5 Pro Announcement Tonight! Anyone Else Worried It Will Instantly Sell out Due to Bots?

With the Sony technical announcement tonight at 1am EST from Mark Cerny is anyone else worried that it will be instantly unavailable due to bots and scalpers?

Other thing I'm worried about is that the Pro won't come with a disc drive as standard. Really hope that's not the case.

What are you guys most excited about the new Pro?

Personally, hoping the extra GPU power and PSSR will improve the terrible picture quality we have been getting from games running at 720p and then upscaled with fsr2 to 4k.

Edit: With the announcement of the Pro costing $1199 and another $160 for the disc drive I am no longer worried. The price is just bare able, but no disc drive is the worst part.
Oh, and don't forget it comes with no stand as standard either…….

I'll be getting one. I've been holding off on playing dragons dogma 2 & wukong until the release of the pro.

    • -1

      Re: Wukong. Same same!

  • -8

    Lol consoles…..

    PC master race

    • +6

These comments arent really welcome here but at over 1k, you can actually get a gaming PC lol
Thats the hell ironic thing here is, what a rort

    • So, what do you want for your 11th birthday?

  • -1

i have ebay gift cards. I would like to use but.. it wont be for preorder on there and might sell out? maybe. I do want an early model not sure what to do.

oh we have to wait till 1am…

  • -1

Had a Ps5 for a few years and didn’t even know there was a new one coming out

  • +1

I'll be waiting until the electricity companies start offering discounted PS5 pro's as a sign up bonus.

Need to make use of that $300 electricity bill rebate the government is giving out.

  • +1

Oh no why did I stay up, that was disappointing and no pre orders. looks like disc-less lol no thanks..

  • +7

    Yeah, no thanks:

    • Underwhelming performance upgrade.
    • Likely over $1000 AUD (based on $699 USD).
    • No disc drive. Can buy one for an additional $159 AUD.
    • yeah this is just cynical

like i'd be surprised if its ONLY $1,000 aud

and the digital only option where you have to pay $160 AUD for a $80 usd drive.

      Jeez. What a rort.

And they havent really announced what the PS5 Pro supported game list is.

With a standard PS5 being under $600 INCLUDING DRIVE.

      Awful awful.

    • +5

Ok, so Australian pricing has been confirmed for $1199 AUD (or $1360 AUD if purchasing the disc drive in addition), which is even higher than I speculated above.

IMO Sony have majorly set the Pro up to fail. I reckon it’ll sell abysmally, which will gradually divert resources away from working on ‘PS5 Pro Enhanced’ versions of games, and the whole thing will eventually fizzle, just like the PSVR2.

In fact, they’ve set the price so high that I reckon even a 20% price cut to the console (which would place it at just under $1k AUD) wouldn’t entice a whole lot of people to pick it up. It’s still just not a worthwhile upgrade for that price.

      • Yeah, it'll be like the PSVR2 all over again. They just won't ship the units (and for good reason, it's freaking expensive for an incremental upgrade.

Back when the PS4 vs PS4 pro was out there was a pretty definite gap in performance, but not this time

      • make it $1500. make the scalpers bleed.

then in a month drop it to $1199.

    • And no stand.

  • +7

Ridiculous price. Arrogant greedy PS3-era Sony is back!

  • +6

reckon this will go for $1199AUD without disk drive

insane that launch model PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X has only gone up in price since launch in comparison to past generations halving price by this time

i can see why Microsoft is considering making future consoles open platform like handheld gaming devices; steam deck, rog ally, etc…

who wants to spend PC prices while locked into Sony's ecosystem when PC offers much better value, flexibility, choice & control in gaming

    • Currently $720 for og PS5 disc refurb at EB. Noice…

  • +11

lol yea this ain’t selling out any time soon 😂. Ridiculous pricing.

    • +1

Scalpers probably wont even want it at this price.. What a joke

  • +1

    LOL

  • +1

Not if they're over $1k each lol. The bots can keep them. Won't make any money. People are dumb and desperate but not when it's thst expensive

  • +2

Yikes… Sony misread the market on this one. I thought it would at least be in the same ballpark as the original, but for basically double the cost without any notable feature upgrades? That's insane.

    • -1

People can just get a second job

  • +2

I am seriously so done with living in this hyper-inflated world at the moment it's honestly ridiculous how bad things have gotten

  • +4

Lol… $1000 and doesn’t come with disc drive… yeah nah. I think its the first time i’ve felt really underwhelmed about a ps product. This is going really badly

    • +4

This is what happens when Sony doesn't have real competion. MS is failing so Sony thinks they can get away with anything. Exactly the same as the launch of PS3 when they thought they could screw consumers.

Even Sony fans should be hoping MS can turn it around.

      • If anything I feel like they're being over confident and as a playstation fan I'm really not supportive of this.

May be I'm getting old or I've lost touch with the modern trend economy. It's been more than 6 months since I last used the ps5 and all this time been using pc with game pass / steam / gog and has been more than enough. I absolutely hate the Microsoft's software bs with windows and gamepass but it is what it is and once you get past the ridiculous update phase its been alright with it. Been really happy with their line up of games for it so far.

Will I get another playstation product -> yes absolutely
Will I get it at RRP or at launch -> Not a chance with this pricing

        ymmv :)

    • +1

*$1200 according to news sources. It's in total $1360 when you buy the disk drive with it.

      • Yeah… rather than capitalising on their market position to invite more players in, they’re pushing away the existing players to alternatives.

  • Double the power

    Double the price

Yeah, the market really can't take this. It's not going to go well. It's a shame.

    • +6

Lol. 1.45x the GPU power, no change in CPU, for 2x the price. Demonstrated by zooming in on trees.

  • +17

AUS price just got announced…$1,199.95!! Actual insanity by Sony

    • +9

You know what's funnier? That's just for the digital.

$1,360 all up for the disc drive also 🤣🤣🤣

      • -8

agreed its expensive but still half the price of a gaming pc so I think it will still sell.

        • +10

Respectfully, where are you getting 'half the price of a gaming pc'?

You can absolutely build a PC for 1200-1400 bucks. Heck even the 7700 XT (supposedly what the ps5 pro equates to, I'm aware hardware level dev work doesn't make this apples to apples but still) with a ryzen 5600, 16gb of ram definitely for the price of a PS5 pro. Grab some cheap or free games following Ozbargain, via steam, epic, whatever is giving some free games at the time… (Edit, threw together a basic build, interchange parts as you like but… $1276 excluding delivery, and yes 1Tb vs 2TB but could make it 2TB easily and still be below DISC version of the ps5 pro https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/g7wdpB)

PS5 Pro prices are insane, and not justified. End story

      • +2

There are trolls on fb stating that going physical is a a lifestyle choice of old aged gamers and the cost can easily be justified. 😂

        • -1

It's weird because presumably these same people are shopping for these consoles at EB Games where they can see all the cheap trade-in deals at the moment, or on Amazon where they constantly list games 40~50% of their PSN digital pricing :/

My first PS5 was actually a digital and I sold/traded up to a regular one because I could see firsthand how much I was missing out on and would be saving with discs.

          • -1

@Stoibs: Well yeah exactly why I use disc version as digital versions never go on sale at a reasonable price for my liking… Also I use ps5 as a 4k uhd movie / tv series player :)

  • -1

The only reason i would want to get a ps5 pro is to play gta 6. But i recently upgraded my gaming pc to a 7800xt so im thinking that should hopefully be sufficient to play it too.

    • +4

If I remember correctly, GTA6 won't be released on PC (at least not on Day 1).

Rockstar has only confirm that it's coming to PS5 and XSX

      • hmmmm, historically every gta eventually gets released on pc, just depends on how much longer

i dont really want to spend $1300 on a console just to play one game. I am yet to see a single ps5 game that excites me enough to warrant purchasing it

  • +8

No need to worry about scalpers at that RRP don’t worry.

  • I held out on a PS5 because I had no money at the time. Waited until PS5 Slim because there were no games. Then I thought "whats another year? I still got PS4 games to go through so I'll wait for the Pro". Now its here. But jfc. $1360 all up. Cant decide if I should splurge, because I can afford it, or not reward Sonys insane pricing, and go for the Slim

    • +2

At that price get a PC. Not only will you have most PS exclusive games (they're now on Steam), but you'll have Xbox and PC games too… and no need to pay for online/PS Plus!

  • +1

Wow! Soo expensive and without Disc drive too!

  • +3

I hope this ‘Ps5 Pro’ at the price they are asking crashes bad for Sony….Sony ought to be brought several notches down….

The Ps5 feels like such a glaring disappointment in terms of hardware vs software utilisation (compared to ps2/ ps3 especially). The devs these days don’t seem to push boundaries or optimise their games well like in the prior PS generations.

This gen’s Sony attitude to pricing/ hardware & software innovation is likely also the outcome of little to no competition they receive, plus it’s not helping that most consumers seem to have a sheep/ fomo mentality these days as well.

I wonder what the ‘Switch’s successor’ will be priced at this point now…

    • +1

Can't wait for the switch 2 - I'd give it ~$650 and it will rock

      • Switch 2 will have ps4 graphics power, ps4 pro if lucky in docked mode!

The main reason is power consumption.

Handhelds are dead/redundant, because mobile phone gpus have caught up in graphics.

        • They'll find a way to make it work, I don't think Nintendo would want to compromise portability - maybe the dock could have an extra chip etc built in to boost docked performance?

Mobile phone GPUs have caught up big time, but there's something nice about playing on an optimised platform designed for games.

  • I was very keen, after updating to the PS4 Pro from ps4, was a decent bump, threw in an SSD, 4k outputs, felt great.

But this seems very incremental. I already have a 1TB SSD extra installed, so 2TB isn't a selling point, I hardwire, so wifi 7 isnt a selling point.

And they're relying on upscaling tech to fight against bad optimisation? Blahhhh.

Joke of a price.. With a disc drive, MAYBE, 1000 here, sure, why not, without one!? 1200?! COME ONNNNNN SONYYYYY

  • Anyone Else Worried It Will Instantly Sell out Due to Bots?

More power than a PS5 (with associated cost) but nothing than can take advantage of it and no disc drive? No one's worried.

  • +1

We are not in any pamdemic so supply chain hasn't been in any stress, why would it be sold out as if it was during the height of covid?

    • +2

Demand will be much lower too, those who scrambled for 1-2 years for a PS5 aren't going to drop 1.2k+ on a new model when theirs barely has a layer of dust yet lol.

  • +10

Whilst I wouldn't say no if I got this as a gift, there's no way in hell I'm dropping 1.2k for this. I don't like to wish bad things upon other people, but I do hope everyone involved in the decision to kill the disc drive and extortionate pricing, has a day filled with petty and minor inconveniences.

    • +4

May their push doors required pulling, and their pulling doors require pull.

May they spill their water on their shirt everytime they take a drink.

May they never insert a USB the correct way until after attempting 5 times.

      • +4

USB one is diabolical. I hope this happens even if they use USB-C

  • +1

Sony always sets launch prices and pre-order prices unfairly high to milk early adopters. I hope as many buyers using bots buy up the initial supply at its highest prices.

I will wait until the price is justified by the hardware performance. Consoles only get cheaper over time. I just exercise patience and make substitutions for what I want to spend my dollars in the meanwhile.

We are lucky as OzBargainers that there are so many deals for entertainment and gadgets. Eg. the money I save on an overpriced console I could put towards the rest of my entertainment system such as a new TV, surround sound A/V receiver, speakers, headphones, laptop, graphics card, smartphone, media player, smart devices, etc.

    • +2

Consoles only get cheaper over time.

That’s not how it works anymore. Consoles have actually increased since release.

  • Yes, with all the atrocities currently going on all around the world, I'm worried about not being able to upgrade my PS5 to a Pro immediately after release.

  • The US price is actually more like $770 USD because of sales tax not being included in the price.

That means the Australian price is going to be minimum $1,199 AUD including GST and possibly even $1,299 AUD if Sony gouges us the way Europe is being gouged.

Then you have to pay $160 for the disc drive and $50 for the stand. So the whole combination could end up costing $1,499 AUD. Just completely insane…

    • +1

Pricing already confirmed for Aus, 1199 pre disc, so 1360 with disc.

      • +1

This is so insane. My PS5 with disc and stand cost $616 new. How can they justify $1,399 (ish) for this super minor upgrade. Haha amazing.

        • No clue. I can get myself a new ITX board, 7800X3D and 32GB of RAM with money left over for the price of a ps5 pro.

Or some sick Ubiquiti gear and rekit my network.

There's so many more things I could buy for almost 1400!

I have a launch PS5 with the pre-copyright battle dbrand darkplates (so has the pointy design rather than the curved one heh). Suits my uses and looks nice too! Heh

  • +2

Sony is delusional…. They are pricing the pro like the ps5 scalper prices… Times have changed we're no longer in covid times. This makes no sense.

  • i would have loved it if they decided to not include a controller… after annoucing the dualsense goes up $5 usd… because… Sony hates you.

    • Is the $5 to cover the cost of stick drift returns? 🤔

    • Don't give them ideas! Next thing you know, they'll just ship the bare console, no cables, no controllers - because y'know, saving the environment or some-such.

  • +1

My original fat PS5 disc edition that I bought from JB HiFi in January 2021 1-2 months after launch that I use in my lounge room, and my slim PS5 disc edition that I also bought from JB HiFi that I use in my bedroom, combined cost me less than the price of the AU PS5 Pro + disc drive.

  • +1

its been pointed out that the first half of the presentation was them shitting on the base PS5

and they literally showed no new games… their whole spiel was you can play their old catalog in 4k 120 whatever

like how many times can you play 'last of us'

    • Well, three editions plus the eventual ps5pro/ps6 version should take it to four..

    • There is a state of play coming on the 19th. Thats were the games will be shown.

  • I would have accepted $1000 with a disc drive, vertical stand and dualsense edge. But that pricing is absurd. It's $1410 all in. I'm all for higher FPS and play in performance mode. I paid $750 for PS5 and $650 for Series X. I don't camp in one corner, I have access to all the platforms. You can say you don't need the stand, or the disc drive - well I certainly do. Until I can buy games on the PS Plus store for the $79 Target/Big W price - or share with my mates (yes I still do this, we exchange games at the office).

  • +1

Rather buy a ROG Ally X at $1,599

  • $1200AUD without a disk drive. Good Lord.

  • Nah its a ripoff, hardly anyone will buy it.

    • People always say this, and then guess what, it always sells. No matter the price. Iphones used to be $400, now their $1200-$2000 and they still sell like crazy.

      • +1

Low end iphone 1 was 499 usd on release in 2007. Iphone 16 is 799 usd on release in 2024. RBA inflation calculator has $499 from 2007 being equal to $760 in 2023 so the price is pretty much the same as the original taking inflation into account.

Anyways the point is that the ps5 pro is a ripoff because of how much more it costs than a ps5 while having very minimal improvements over it.

      • Iphones used to be $400, now their $1200-$2000 and they still sell like crazy.

People need a phone. People justify an expensive phone because 1) It’s a critical device they use everyday that could literally save their life in the case of an emergency. 2) It’s now the primary camera for capturing special moments in their life.

I video game console is basically a toy. It’s not needed.

  • it will be $999 by Christmas

    • In 2026.

Sony will just throw things into a PS exclusives bundle or a 2nd controller to attempt to 'sweeten the deal', rather than lower the price.

While there's hope, there's not a lot of it. Maybe they'll bundle the optical drive to save $10.
If there's even stock available once people start hoarding the $160 drives.

  • +1

Has anyone realized that all this ridiculous pricing is caused by scalpers (and willing buyers) of PS5 back in 2020/2021?
Back then people were happily paying that amount of money just to get their hands on the PS5 and that's where Sony got the idea of jacking up the price.

    https://dev.to/driscoll42/an-analysis-of-the-143-million-ps5…
Check out the median selling price in the analysis above - it is very close to the announced PS5 Pro pricing.

    • +1

@evilhomura89 - While I agree that some people did stupidly pay substantially higher than Sony’s asking price from scalpers when the original PS5 launched in 2020 and 2021, that was during Covid though, when nobody had anything to do other than stay at home, so people wanting the latest console and it being a hot item was to be excepted then. However basing sales behaviour on what happened during Covid to now in 2024 and expecting the same result isn’t going to happen.

    • I don’t think it’s driven by scalpers, but rather the same cost pressures that people have at home also rippling through the supply chain. Well after the scalping stopped, prices went up. Xbox has also gone up despite significantly worse sales than Sony and Nintendo hasn’t achieved any significant price drops on its 7 year old console either even as sales are slowing down.

Digital Foundry has covered quite a few times that even before the generation began they saw a trajectory for manufacturing which was indicating they’d unlikely be able to do significant cost reduction for a Series X console, which in part influenced their decision to ship the Series S day one as there wasn’t a scenario where they felt they’d hit lower price points on a premium console. Given Sonys own pricing has gone up since launch, again post scalping periods, that suggests there may have been something to that.

It’s also not as though consoles are unique here. A lot of IT costs have gone up.

None of that is to say a $1200 console doesn’t feel excessive, but I think it’s for reasons other than a period of scalping in 20/21.

      • Consoles more often than not have been sold at a loss so increasing costs of IT hardware isn't a strong explanation. Sony will be making a healthy profit on these based on the hardware, which is not usual. The PS3 which was also very expensive at the time was sold at a significant loss.

For evidence that manufacturers use prices paid to scalpers to set an RRP you can look at Nvidia's 4000 series cards compared to the 3000 series. The RRP of the new generation was basically the same price that the public demonstrated they were willing to pay to scalpers.

        • But the companies can and will only wear so much loss as is tolerable. Sony probably is looking to not take much of a hit, or any, on the Pro units which in turn is why I don’t think scalping specifically is what is driving this price. Never mind that the scalping period was peak covid and home entertainment across the board saw people willing to pay more for that period.

I do think it’s over priced by a few hundred, but I don’t think scalping set the price. I also question how many PS5s actually sold for much above $1000 at the time given how many open listings there was on eBay at the time. It probably looked like a few to a casual observer, but this is hardware that at retail sells millions. I imagine the people paying a significant premium was a small drop in the ocean.

      • So if what you're saying is true, then MS made the right choice by release Series S. We should all buy Series S consoles and force gaming companies to optimise their games.

  • $1300 is pretty steep

  • +2

Fifa players will still buy them no matter the price, cant blame sony for taking them for a ride.

  • +1

With these prices I'm quitting console game and building a mini-ITX Steam Box for my next TV gaming rig. They only cost a little more now.

  • +1

Anyone here still with their base model PS4 thinking of getting the PS5 Pro before the announcement but is currently having second thoughts on settling with the slim PS5 instead ?

    • -1

You might be behind, but given what's available in stores, and the PS4/PS5 differences… It's not a must-have item.

Even the Xbox Series X vs PS5, it's closer now than it was at launch, just because the showcase 'must have games' for the generation haven't wowed people. That's the missing piece. It's an incremental improvement, much like moving from the iPhone 11/12 to an iPhone 16. or Samsung Galaxy S20 to S24. Good, not Great.

If you don't have a 4K OLED TV, it's not going to be significant enough of a bump in quality, unless you also have a TV to showcase it. YMMV.

The games are better, the experience is different. PS5 is not always an improvement because they built the console to start a new standard. It's going to take the games industry another 4 years to get there, i.e. 4k HDR at 60 FPS or higher. Let alone 120 FPS.

Not enough exclusive games use PS5 features, like the DualSense adaptive trigger or the controller speaker/touchpad. The games that do, are fantastic. But there's less than 20. Maybe 50 at a stretch.

As for PSVR2, you may as well get the Quest 3 and enjoy the freedom of lightweight, cordless VR for a similar price point.
And, if you don't have a big 4K TV, the Quest 3 can run Xbox cloud gaming and the controller. The meta/quest 3 VR Games are mediocre, but, it's a mobile phone VR chip.

    • If you've got a base ps4 and going to a ps5 slim, it's a much better device. Still can play all your ps4 games. Proper 4k 120 support assuming your TV can do it too. Last black Friday sales I upgraded to a 4k oled and damnnn that was a massive upgrade too (from a basic 4k TV from 2017).

My launch ps5 will be hanging around for quite a while.

I reckon keep an eye out for a good sale in the ps5 slim and go for it! Ps5 pro price is insane

    • yeah same exact same. honestly might settle with the slim, and be on the lookout for deals in the coming months

  • +2

    AUD $1199?!

    Yeah, nah

I’m surprised Sony aren’t selling the power, Hdmii and usb-c cables separately at this point.

    • +1

      Doesn't come with a stand… soo….. there's that

  • The disc drive is 70usd which is 105 if i get it imported from the usa will it still play games from aus fine ? Hard to find any info about this i know its different with movies

    • PS5 and PS4 games are not region locked. So yes, it will work.

    • And $699 USD for the console is $1050 AUD. How will you get it imported? I might want to do the same.
