D-Link DIR-632 Router $40 at OW (DD-WRT Compatible)

40

D-Link 632 $40 at office works. Seems like an alright deal as it has 8mb of flash so it can run full DD-WRT (and the install process for this model isn't too bad from the wiki).

Doesn't get the best reviews as a router otherwise, but still good for the price especially if your going to run DD-WRT.

Personally I am going to use it as a cheap extender.

  • DD-WRT install should be straightforward apart from this:

"Can only load on the NA (North American) versions of the router. You need to Hex Edit the NA firmware to load elsewhere per the instructions."

    • Yeah, I will give it a go in the next couple of days and upload the edited file if it works.

But the guys at OW said I could return it no worries if you can't get DD-WRT to work (assuming you dot brick it I suppose).

I can confirm that you can install dd-wrt. Hex edited the file then uploaded. Worked a treat. Just do it over cable and not wifi. Pretty good wifi router. Pity it doesn't have gigabit or a built in adsl modem. I think there is a tplink that has all that and more for about the same price.

    • Do you know the model of the TP link?

    • i want to know this aswell.

+1 for TP Link with Giga & ADSL

    • Adsl/router combos will never be supported by DD-WRT unfortunately =/

      • thats the fault of modem router companies who do not have to release gpl code

  • I had one. Updated to DD-WRT yesterday. Best feature is USB drive can shared to multi computers. Now my portable hard drive can act like a server. but I hav't workout out the setting for WDS.

I just want to make a recommendation to people .. if you want to use custom firmware (DD-WRT in particular) I would personally recommend going for routers with Broadcom chipsets, especially when wanting to use the more advanced features such as client mode / client bridged / repeater bridge. These can be a headache getting working reliably on Atheros chipsets. You will need to resort to using WDS, which isn't as flexible. If you want a more trouble-free experience, use Broadcom chipsets instead.
