  • good deal!!! mm maybe i should get one and compare is against my sigma 1.4

    dammit OP!

    • The Sigma is a better lens in almost all aspects.

      • +1

thats the overall impression of the ive been getting from all my online reading, but theres still that urge to find out for yourself firsthand.

should add that im very, very happy with my sigma

Not going to be this cheap though.

"Don’t expect such a lens to be much less than the $800"

      • -2

You have a tendency to exaggerate the RRPs.

        1. You can search any international websites, like eBay or DigitalRev. They retail the 50mm f1.4 USM for around $360.

        BRAND NEW. GENUINE STOCK.

Where do you get your RRPs? First release time in your local small camera shop? HAH.

        • +1

He's referring to the NEW version coming soon, and is quoting canonrumors.com

Having said that, this lens can generally be had by any grey importer for around $350. $300 is a decent saving though.

        • +1

Last time I checked, "international websites, like eBay or DigitalRev" was not part of Australia.

        • Last time i checked, "amazon" was not part of Australia. This ain't really a bargain at all, unless of course u were that idiot that considered buying from Canon.com.au.

        • +1

Do you even realise what RRP stands for? It is Recommended Retail Price, as set by the manufacturer or distributor. Has nothing to do with street prices internationally or in Australia. You can almost always buy any product from a store for less than RRP.

RRPs cannot be exaggerated. They are either correct, or they are not.

  • I got one of these. Excellent lens and an absolute steal at under 300 bux!

  • How did you get A$290 delivered? Still showing at US$307.48 for me.

    • I think US$307.48 is about A$291 at todays exchange rate. give or take

  • thinking of pulling the trigger on this one or may be the sigma 30 mm from camera pro currently for 325. considering I shall be using it on a crop sensor, is this a better buy? (am aware about the focal length differences)
also have heard that camera and lens might need recalibration if using sigma lens on canon. any advice shall be appreciated.

    • look up the cheapest grey import price you can, then contact CR kennedy to price match the sigma lens. thats how i got my sigma 50mm 1.4 for $412 with 2 yr sigma warranty.

canon 50 1.4 EF lens, sigma 30mm DC lens (last time i checked), so if you're using it on a crop now, itll be fine, but decide whether you want the flexibility of going FF later on without getting new lenses, get the canon EF or sigma DG.

  • Is the equivalent Sigma with a Nikon mount also one of the better prime lens for a crop frame dslr (5100).

    • I prefer the nikon 50mm/f1.4 over the sigma but I use the 35mm/f1.8 more as its a 52mm once you factor in 1.5x on a cropped sensor

      • -1

Cheers ynot1985, the nikon 35/1.8, not a sigma one?

  • sounds like a good deal, can anyone recommend a camera to go with? would like to buy a set for xmas..

    • +2

Canon Eos 550D or Canon Eos 600D. Not TOO much of a difference, fairly decent priced cameras.

    • +3

5d Mkiii. Awesome camera…. Love mine

      Now for a sensible answer;

1st u need to identify what kind of user you are. As you are asking here I am going to assume, and I apologise if I am wrong, a consumer that would be classed as 'consumer' ( as opposed to prosumer or professional)'

That puts you in the class of the XXXD family of canon cameras. I'll stick with canon here as you are looking at a canon lens.

The latest consumer class EOS is the 650D. It has some great features and can be had on special on here recently. I would recommend this. For a little less greenery you can get the 600 D. If you plan on doing video as well, get the 650D with the 18 - 135mm STM lens. That has a silent motor and continuous focus for video, something lacking in all other models., where you needtomanially focus if you change focal length ( ie, zoom in whilst filming)

If you don't want to spend 300 on a lens, get the 50mm f/1.8. It is still a super fast lens, but is lacking in build quality and probably focus speed. However, you can get it for about 100 bucks. Photos are super sharp with it so you won't suffer in image quality.

  • Awesome!! I've been looking for a good price! Thanks OP

  • I have the Canon f/1.8 lens…
Is this worth the upgrade? o.o

    • +2

if you dont know the answer then obviously no for you

      • It's not.
I've done the research and it's not a great improvement.
        Nothing worth spending $290 for.
Rather save up for something else~

        • well it looks like you already had your answer

        • if you think its not worth spending $290 for,
          1. like bbyboy said you already have your answer
          2. you wont know how to use it (rather than claiming that the 1.4 is nothing special)

sigma, nikon or canon, 50 1.4 is many photographers choice of lens if they only had one.

        • actually I didn't.
Not at the time of writing.

        • -1

          1.8 to 1.4
they both produce similar effects with the 1.4 creating a shallower depth of field.
Though 1.8 is allegedly said to be slightly (very very little) in the centre than the 1.4.

The thing I was mainly asking which I did NOT correctly state was; is the image quality improved with this lens.

        • +2

One of the more noticeable differences when using would be the fact that the 1.8 often has to hunt (rather noisily) for focus. The 1.4 is a lot faster in this respect. I doubt you would notice much difference in image quality.

Not sure why people have to post sarcastic or demeaning answers to a perfectly reasonable question.

I would say if you are serious about your photography, even in hobbyist terms, then this would be a worthwhile upgrade, mainly for robustness and focusing.

        • Thank you!
If this were like Yahoo Answers I'd rate you 5 stars :)

And I did notice that the 1.8 was rather slow in focusing (and often incorrect things) on my subjects.

          Thanks again!

    • Definitely especially this comes with USM.

  • Alas, Canon… any similar Nikon? Actually looking for a 35mm but another 50mm wouldn't be too shabby.

  • Great price. Just ordered one, hopefully gets here before my wife pushes out our first little one. Thanks OP!

  • Great lens a real low light marvel a little hard to focus at time, but a must have.

    • +1

What actually is dodgy is people that neg a deal without bothering to research the rules.

There's a vid explaining what this kind of lens is good for if anyone is interested - not my vid.

Unfortunately (in terms of this deal), I'm a Nikon man :(

  • anyone know if these are made in Japan - I remember there was a 40mm deal (not from amazon) but the lenses were made in malaysia. And they had a 50mm one later and I asked them and they said that the 50mm they stocked were not made in Japan.

    • Just received mine. They are made in Japan

  • Nice deal. Buying one.

  • Thanks, good deal.

Ended up paying extra for the priority shipping, should hopefully mean I get it before doing my XMas travel.

  • I'm a new to the whole photography thing, can someone please tell me what the difference between this lens and the one in the link below?
    http://www.citiwideonline.com/au/index.php?page=shop.product…

    • Looks to be the same one to me, without digging too close.

    • I contacted the guys at dwi and they said that their lens is made in malaysia (this was a while ago might be different now), I'm not 100% sure if the amazon one is made in japan?

      • huey is not talking about dwi

  • None, but citiwide will hit you with shipping fees of around $60 for this lens, bringing the total to 335

  • So did anyone find out if these are made in Japan or Malaysia?

    • Just received mine . They are made in Japan.
