Hi Ozbargain!

My name is Matt and I'm the guy behind Hz Watches - one of Australia's newest watch microbrands. I launched my first model earlier this year, and a big part of the HZ.01 success was the support received from all of you OzBargainers. l think it is really important to engage with the community here, as I'm trying to build a reputation as one of the most "value for money / bang for buck" watch microbrands - and I think you are all very good judges of what constitutes value in this market.

The HZ.02 is my take on the classic chronograph. I have always been drawn to classic chronographs from the 60s and 70s, which I believe was the golden age for chronographs – designs with a perfect blend of sportiness, timelessness, and elegance. While I believe that any watch collection benefits from a vintage chronograph, the cost and difficulty to attain and maintain them often make them hard to add them to any collection. For this reason, I wanted to try and create something that could evoke the same experience, but much more attainable and practical to fill a gap in my collection.

On the 30th of November at 9AM, I'm opening up the pre-order book for our HZ.02 Chronograph for the first time. All 5 colourways will be available for $379 plus $10 domestic shipping, a $100 reduction from the retail price when pre-orders close (48 hours or until our first run of stock is exhausted). All pre-orders will include a leather watch roll, and a black genuine epsom leather strap with quick release.

Thank you! I really appreciate your support

  • Great to see you back with another banger Matt.
Massive step up, mate. Well done.

Thank you! I've found the golden formula for designing watches is to be a little bit selfish and make what I want for my collection and what I'd put on my wrist. Glad to hear that it has hit the mark - lots of exciting things to come in future!

    sapphire caseback is a rarity

but a caseback on a quartz??? what's there to look at? the battery?

    • +1

Great question! Being a brand focused on bring quartz to the forefront, quartz is in our DNA. Rather than shy away from quartz like many brands, I wanted to make a statement and show off the movement. For that, I selected the VK63 meca-quartz to be the perfect quartz movement to put on display, as you can see the mechanical chronograph module engage and disengage through the caseback when the pushers are used - a rarity for any quartz watch!

      • I like it, rarely seen.

Nice… anything for big boy wrists circa 45mm?

    • +2

Thank you! Unfortunately nothing yet, the HZ.01 is a 38.5mm and the HZ.02 comes in at 37mm. I'm working on many different designs and concepts at the moment, but with where those projects are currently sitting, I would be surprised if we offered larger than 41mm in the future - it's just a combination of where I see the market going in future with smaller classic sizings, and me being a bit selfish and making watches that I would wear as part of the smaller wrist gang.

Once we grow large enough, I'm hoping to be able to offer multiple sizes of future designs, such as a 36mm and a 39mm so folks can choose the one best suited to their wrist

  • Good lord that is indeed a beautiful watch!!!

So pardon my ignorance but do you need to wind this watch? Or is it battery powered?

I have a seiko presage that I love but the band broke the other day and the crystal has a huge scratch in it. I’m not a position to buy a new watch but if I was, I’d be in the front of the line for a blue panda, seriously… gorgeous watch!

Well done Matt in the journey so far I’m in your corner hoping for your success!!

Thank you, I appreciate your kind words and support! No stupid questions here, I'm glad you asked. We're all about trying to bring more quartz watches to the market, which all operate using batteries instead of hand winding or winding through a rotor.

The movement is called a meca-quartz which can be quite confusing, but is a quartz watch powered by a battery. The "meca" side of it comes from the chronograph module, which is built into the movement and operates mechanically (but uses the battery as a power source). The result of this is you get a mechanical effect for the chronograph seconds hand, where a mechanical stepper advances the second hand at 4 beats per second to give a smooth sweeping effect which is a hallmark of mechanical watches, instead of 1 beat per second which is one of the main tells that a watch is (most likely) quartz.

Are you in Melbourne? When we do a grand opening of the showroom, we'll be giving away some straps to try and get some heads through the door - I'd love to give you a free strap and help you change over the broken band.

      • ahhh sadly I am in Perth!!

  • Good luck mate with your start up

    • Thank you, I really appreciate it!

  • I really like the designs but 37mm is almost women's size. The Seiko Speedtimer at 39mm is tiny. All the best with sale and I'll keep an eye on you in the future.

    • Thank you! Lots of exciting things to come in future

  • Best of luck mate.

Chrono is too small for my taste but hope the launch goes well for you.

    • Thank you!

  • Too small for me but good luck. It takes balls to do this

    • Thank you!

  • Blue panda is looking decent.
    Keep up the great work.

    • Thank you!

  • Beautiful watch mate, a bit too small for my taste, hopefully you will release a bigger watch in the future. Best of luck!

    • Thank you! Plenty of exciting designs for the future, will be a mixed bag of sizes!

  • Loved the 01 series. Not after a chrono but love anything minimal and I must say that 01 ticks all the boxes for me.

    Thanks, mate!

    • Thank you for the support on the 01, it means a lot to me! Glad to hear that it ticks the boxes, exactly what I wanted it to do, hope you get many many years of wear out if it and wear it in good health

  • Oh damn, opening a storefront too? If the timing works out I might need to swing by to pick up my hz02. Was torn between the panda and blue panda but ended up going black since I already have a couple of blue dial watches I wear regularly.

    • Thank you for your support, cant go wrong with black! More to come in this space with the storefront but we should be open in mid-Jan, and will have a store opening event weekend to celebrate. Looking forward to hopefully catching up in person at the storefront and getting your HZ.02 onto your wrist soon!

  • Tool watch next please

  • The green looks beautiful, the two panda are also quite stunning.

  • no date function on the chronometer?! hmmmmm

    • That's a really good point and an odd omission.

  • I bought the HZ.01.2 and it’s an awesome watch - attractive design, lightweight, and being quartz means I’m not always setting the time. These look just as good, and I’m liking how you’ve taken a different route with your chronograph and not cluttering up the dial & bezel with things most people don’t need. I reckon green is a sexy colourway for my money.

  • Hopefully no ghost date…

  • Looks to be good watches with sapphire and titanium blut too small for most people and the hassle of changing batteries every three years or so.
