"Reasonable" Lifespan for a Baby Bottle Steriliser

Hi all,

My wife is currently pregnant expecting our first and of course she is doing all the research in terms of things we will be purchasing. We aren't due until late March and she has been holding off purchasing a baby bottle UV steriliser, specifically the Minbie which is $390 i.e. on the higher end of things I believe. I've already tried to convince her about using our dishwasher sanitiser function, microwave steriliser, Milton tabs etc so no need to get into that side of things.

Anyway the Minbie comes with a one year warranty from the manufacturer. My wife specifically did not buy it during an Xmas sale because 3 of those 12 months would be "wasted" as the baby hasn't been born yet. In my eyes something that costs this much should be expected to be function for at least 2 years if not longer.

I understand that potentially we have statutory protections under the ACL in case it does break in the 12-24 month timeframe but I am interested to know if the general public feel this is reasonable or not.

Thanks!

Minbie 12 month warranty is reasonable.

ACL overrides the business warranty so 2 years would be reasonable.

Pot of boiling water. You already have a pot. Tadaa!

First-time parents are too precious, which is natural. By the time the second and subsequent come around the pot starts looking like a valid option.

      • Yeah we spent months looking at stuff, can't blame 'em. By the third child, they make their own cereal potion for breakfast and wear tutus with cowboy boots downtown.

  • My wife and I bought the cheap Omebel steriliser and drier from Amazon. Has been going solid for 8 months now and is much more convenient than mucking around boiling in pots.

$400 for a steriliser is ludicrous.

  • Actually Minbie $390 is not too bad, my sister in law bought this Korean Smart UV steriliser for $589 a few months ago. I tried to tell my brother she could buy a cheaper UV steriliser for much less, but yeah couldn’t change her mind. The thing is huge, taking up a lot of table top space. Personally I would not buy it, too expensive and too bulky.

It is not like there's a count down timer that stops after 12 months of purchase.

Anyway why so concerned about 1-year warranty? There are no widespread reports saying it will develop faults after 1 year. You have probably bought many things over hundreds and thousands of dollars and don't stress about the warranty, why so much worry now?

Just see it as $50 for the Minbie, $350 to keep her happy.

Also, don't count on ACL too much, it's not a matter of course and you will have to "fight" for it depending on the retailer. If they choose to ignore you or just drag things out, how much time are you prepared to waste to recoup from a $400 item that will be well used for more than 1 year?

  • How long do babies drink from bottles that require steralization?
