Good HD 720p (minimum) vehicle DVR car dash camera?

Hello,
Firstly apologies for the horrendous title.. i just couldnt seem to phrase what i wanted to say properly. Im after a in car DVR otherwise known as a dashboard camera basically to record the road as your driving which can then be used as evidence in crashes and such.

Anyone know any good ones that might be on sale or just generally cheap? Looking at spending up to about $80-$100.

Must have 720p recording and able to loop record. Does not need a screen on the device, as long as it takes SD cards that i can remove and put into a computer. Does not need any special night features although would be nice to have i guess. Is it possible for these to auto start recording upon car start somehow? I assume it just waits for a signal to turn it on then starts recording…

Thanks guys!
(PS i know there was a thread about this, but i looked through it and its quite outdated. I imagine technology especially in this relatively new consumer field would advance quite quickly..

  • 720p for $80-$100. I don't think you can get anywhere near that price.

    • Definitely possible these days.

      • Thanks for the link! Looks pretty good. Any other ones?

        • Sorry, I don't know. I was just doing some research myself the other day. I think I would want to get it hardwired if I got one rather than snaking around to the cigarette lighter.

  • If you're going to get an elcheapo from ebay, look at techmoan's youtube channel

Lens quality is important. Even though it might record at 1080 p it wont mean much if its lens is less than optimal.

  • @cheese510, some of the dash cams out there also record when they detect motion, so they can catch anyone scratching or bumping into your car in the carpark. but I guess if you park on a busy main road it would keep recording continuously which may risk flattening your car battery — some GPS units work off their own battery and then recharge from the car battery when the car is started, which is probably the ideal setup for any auto-electrical device.

Cough up another 100 or so and get a decent camera, the Blackvue DR400GHD-II is the pick of the bunch, does 720/1080, has gyrometer for impact protection, parking mode with movement detection and a very nice lense. Heres a sample of what mine is like at 720p

Taken heading southbound on the pacific highway turning right onto Ryde Road.

Edit, just remember as much as cameras record other peoples stupidity, they also record yours.

    • That does look quite nice indeed. Does the parking mode run off an internal battery then recharge when the car is turned on?
Spot on with the own stupidity part. Might help me to be a better driver in the long run.

      • No internal battery, however you can get a power module to run off the cars battery that will switch the unit off if the voltage on the car batt gets too low.

    • That camera is terrible. If it isn't a Youtube error, or a problem with my PC I am seeing lots of lost frames in your sample video. About every 3-5 seconds there is a big chunk of data missing.

It may be you are using a too low rated SD card (try Class6 or Class10).

I have seen some reviews on YT by Techmoan, and a number of action type cameras duplicate frames but this one seems to just keep jumping them.

      • Its not dropping frames, it would be the unit moving slightly over the various bumps as its not windscreen mounted, its mounted on a suction cup mount. Its got a sandisk class 10 in it. Must be your end i just watched the whole thing even at a standstill its smooth for me.

        Defo your end.

        • Right you are…. I need a new PC :) Apologies for any mis-information.

Tried it on my wifes christmas Xoom and all is good.

  • A genuine DVR-027 dash cam is more than you need and they can be had for around $55ish delivered.
Beware of the tons of imitations out there.

  • Opinions on this one please? I am wanting to buy one for my husband and I know nothing about them
