Samsung 64" 3D Plasma TV (PS64E550D1M) - $1450.00 Cash Deal from Harvey Norman

550

Went to get a better deal on the LG 60MP6700 advertised at JB for $1196 and Good Guys now for $1195.
Couldn't get it for the $1200 'inc extra glasses' I was hoping for, and both were out of stock anyway!
Went to HN (Frankston) and likewise, no stock, so I thought I'd try get a bit off of the $1696 asking price for the Samsung (advertised at GG for $1597). I offered cash on the spot and he came back to me with $1450.oo!
Obviously there's still enough room for them to move on this product.
Good luck, go do your worst, see what you can get!!!

Ps. Obviously I have removed most personal info from the receipt!

Mod: OP requests receipt be removed as HN sales rep states this was a one off price.

Wow, what a price….how i wish one of my current three flat screen tv's died!

After filling up the living room, games room and bedroom i cant really come up with an excuse to buy another tv!

although would it be strange to have a tv in the bathroom?

I had to get rid of my 10yo $4500 80cm Sony Trintron Wega before I could get this!!!

    • +18

Why not? Plasma has the best black levels, colours, and overall image quality.

      • +8

        obvious LCD fanboi is obvious

"but its newer, it must obviously be better"

        • +10

At this size there would be no way i would get anything but plasma.

        • +4

At this size there would be no way i would get anything but plasma.

pftt, fool. dont try and bring common sense into this argument. theres a time and a place for that, and fanboi'ism isnt one ;)

now back to the real world…. i did just buy the kogan 55" lcd to replace my old 50" plasma, i hope im not disappointed but im also not overly fussy about my TV's. im more a bang for buck sorta OzBer. but if i saw this before i already paid for the kogan id rather this.

maybe apollo wants to buy my brand new 55" lcd so i can upgrade to this? hehe

        • It seems pretty widely accepted that Plasma has deeper blacks. But my concern with them is always burn in. I remember going to buy a plasma several years ago and mentioning that I wanted to play games on it . They salesman said oh no don't do that if you have the same image on it you can burn it in. I said what happens if im watching a dvd, fall asleep and it goes back to the main menu won't that burn it in too? He wasn't sure but thought that too could be a problem. in the end I didn't buy a plasma because of that and the stories and burn ins ive seen on plasma screens. I had two friends have mild burn ins that they had to do all sorts of tricks to try and get the burn in out. (eg reverse images etc..)

Has that improved with the modern crop of plasma screens?

          @drunifex

It's funny about a year ago someone asked this same question which I replied to. Modern day plasmas have burn in reduction technology. Early models of plasmas where susceptible to image retention but today its almost myth.

Quick google: Pioneer ran a test (back in 2005) by leaving Half Life 2 on for a whole weekend, after they got back there was image retention but they where able to remove it by running a video for 24 hours: http://www.pioneerelectronics.ca/pio/pe/images/portal/cit_34…

        • +1

Is LCD newer than plasma? LCD's have been around since the days of pocket calculators and Game & Watch's.

        • @drunifex
Thats old news. I have a plasma from 2010, that my less aware brother left on a menu screen overnight. No ill effects. Whats more concerning is the power consumption. My 50" uses 550w. Can imagine how much juice a 64" sucks up.

        • @ drunifex

A lot of the burn-in criticisms levelled at plasma tvs originate from the first early batches where it definitely occurred. I recall going to a Hilton a number of years ago where all of their tvs suffered burn-in from the hotel menu that's loaded up on the screens before you enter.

However if such a large problem persisted, plasma tvs wouldn't sell anymore. I've personally had mine for 3 years (Panasonic G10 series) and it's fine. I'm a relatively heavy gamer so there's things like on-screen levels (health levels etc) that rarely take themselves from the screen for hours at a time, and one or two occasions where I've accidentally left a DVD/Blu-Ray menu on the screen and left the house (whoops).

There's been a tad of what I call "shadows", silhouettes of the item that was on the screen after you turn it off, but they tend to remove themselves relatively quickly. No permanent damage. I believe however that they can be more susceptible in the first 100 hours or so. The easy way around this is when you first buy it is to leave it on the TV when you go to bed so it wears itself in.

So short answer, it's not an issue anymore. If it were, they wouldn't sell.

As for the lcd vs plasma debate, they both have their pros and cons. Pick the TV that's best for you at the price you want and go for it.

        • My plasma's a 40" pana, with our family use averaging between 1-2kwh a day; 70/30 ratio based on the energy monitor. So 22 - 44 cents a day. I can't see this type of power consumption being a sales point for or against lcd/plasma.

        • Would be great for Pioneer employees to have to test games on the plasma for a whole weekend.

        • Hi nosdan,
I bought the 55" LED LCD 3D Kogan last August. I was disappointed with the colour rendering at first. However, with a fair of tweaking and driving the video from the mythtv HTPC I eventually got it to an acceptable state.

What I'm saying is be prepared to fiddle. The Kogan's panel is capable. Some of its firmware isn't.

          Cheers

        • plasma has been around since mankind began

      • So what? its also noisier, hotter, uglier and more expensive to run.

        • +4

          Noisier and uglier?

          lol

        • +10

          He forgot smellier! :p

yeah, it's a poo poo face

And I already have 2 (frustrating to watch football on) LCDs here!!!
(and rugby, for my northern cousins!)

      • +8

I don't think the LCD is your problem, you might wanna start barracking for a new team…

        • hehe love it

        • Excellent

      • I can't see how Rugby can be called 'football'. Only soccer can be called true football and Aussie Rules has merit because kicking the ball through the goals achieves maximum points, unlike rugby where you run over the line for maximum points. Most Rugby players cant even kick a ball properly.

        • Hence, the reason I wrote "and rugby…"

        • Aussie rules has been shit since Warwick Capper left…no Capper, no deal! :s

apollo, can you tell us which 64"LCD is selling at this price?
~200kw extra (if you watch 10hrs a day) is what we pay if we choose plasma over LED, which cost ~$40 dollar a year. Can you find us a 64' LCD (not yumcha brand) at this price with decent picture like this samsung plasma?

I don't mind LCD or LED, if they have similar price, great and smooth picture (expensive LCD do, but almost double the price).

    • Choose the picture quality not the technology. Both can be great!

    • +2

The ONLY thing inferior about plasmas is the reflection levels, worth it though for everything else they do better.

      • i will vouch for that, cannot face my plasma against the wall facing a window. very frustrating. resorted to moving it in front of the window but worried about the heat levels from the sunlight??? any thoughts?

    • Plasma's
      Pros:
      Deeper Blacks
      Better Colour
      Greater Viewing Angles
      Better image quality overall

      Cons:
      Higher Power consumptions
      Potential for Burn In

Pros far outweigh the cons for me.

      • +1

How much extra power consumtion are we talking? $5 extra per year on average? $100? More?

        • +2

          Oh wait…

~200kw extra (if you watch 10hrs a day) is what we pay if we choose plasma over LED, which cost ~$40 dollar a year.

          Thanks stevelo

Have they fixed the awfully sluggish guide in the new Samsungs? I have a a 24" and a 58" series 7(?) and it's a dog to use the guide on both.

    • Nah it's not too bad; would be snappier if it had the DUUEEEEEELING CORES!

    • Agreed, there's a 32" Samsung series 6 in the house, which I can't stand using because of the guide. The Panasonic plasma I bought for the lounge room is much better to navigate.

    • the fix is getting a separate pvr w/bluray player, or one of those WD live things

  • Thats a pretty good deal. I bought mine for about $1800 when aus post had the 20% off good guys. Been very happy with it so far.

hahhaa do not trust harvey norman at all… don't take my word for it:

    http://www.theage.com.au/national/harvey-norman-worst-for-cu…

not to mention their latest asus tablet debacle..

Harvey Norman are the devil. Buy from them at your peril.

  • -8

Nice Maximum Power Consumption of 455W! With a couple of hours use a day you will soon find out you need a second job to pay for the running costs. Compare with a 70" LCD running at max 240W…. almost half of this plasma.

    • +10

Lets assume that its consuming an extra 200w for 2 hours a day. That would equate to an extra $9 on a quarterly power bill. Need a second job to pay for an extra $3 a month on power? Yeah, sure thing bud.

    • +4

Oh god, just leave that tired argument at the door. I've only ever owned LED/LCD, and even I'm sick of the whole plasma energy consumption crap. More to the point, why do you even care what other people prefer to spend their money on?

    • And you'll end up spending more on the LCD upfront anyway.

    • Consumption has been tested.. The equivalent size LED, using for 3-4 hours a day, will cost about $30 less per year. Not much to spend for a superior panel at a cheaper price to begin with.

Enjoy your washed out LED panel chief.

  • Is that ex demo? I think we'd like some more clarification on this deal - because it's pretty damn slick (500$ cheaper than the cheapest E8000 price and nearly 1000$ cheaper than the cheapest 65" Panasonic price)
I'd prefer the 8000 or the Panasonic but 1450 is MADNESS!

So, ex demo? Can they do more of these?

EDIT: and let us know if it has a loud buzzing.

    • +1

Where are you seeing the 64E8000 for $1950? Please tell….

    • +1

Brand spanking new in the box!!!
I'm going to pick it up right now… and if the display model isn't sitting exactly where it was last night then I'm coming back home with $1450 in my pocket!!!

      • Confirmed its new?

  • Binglee have the 50" LG plasma smart tv with wifi, delivered for $799 and that will play iview, SBS, 7&9 from the net but I'm waiting prices of the BIG tv's to drop to this level later this year… Patience gets the worm in the end…

    • +3

Only a couple days left this year. Patience better hurry up

    • Yes and the second mouse gets the cheese.

    • +1

Geez what's considered BIG these days? I think 50" is pretty huge

  • +3

"Went to HN" oh no you didn't…

    • Would have been a better deal if it is not HN. The sales rep services are a big minus.

  • has anyone managed to get it at this price anywhere?

    • Trying my luck this afternoon.

  • -2

    Does it buzz?
How would get go watching 11 hours straight of fox sports with their solid no moving logo in the top right hand corner? Burn in??

    • burn in? again?

edit: I just realised the burn in comments were greyed out for too many -ve's…

      As you were.

    • No.

    • LOL at people's ignorance. Stop being sucked in to buying inferior products at higher prices purely because of issues that affected the technology 10 years ago… or some shit for brains salesman.

Plasma provides a superior viewing experience… The end.

  • Wow do these TVs get any bigger? I'm waiting for the 100inch tv to be released near future.

    • 70 inch sharp
      80 inch sharp
90 inch sharp just about released I think
      84 inch LG
      85 &102 inch Bang & Olufsen(I think $123k for the 85 inch)

      When does the size stop???

  • HN Chadstone confirmed no stock
Good Guys tried but couldn't go below $1567
    HN Frankston confirmed no stock
    HN Mitcham confirmed no stock

Apparently Stock avail at Thomastown (6) and lots at Fountain Gate (33) 14:00 29/12/12.

Fountain Gate (phone) indicated they would price match but wanted the original receipt (???). Might have to go in and ask in person with a print out.

  • No stock anywhere. Good Guys Carseldine (11 in stock) would do it for $1550. Another $49 for delivery; but it was ticketed at $1599 until NYE anyway.

  • +2

    Guys…
It would seem I have caused a bit of an uproar with this deal!
The salesrep has called me to explain that this was simply "a 1 off deal that could not be replicated" and has also asked "could I please remove my post as they are receiving a negative response from management!"
Like I said guys, go do your worst. But it would appear I was just in the right place, at the right time, under the right conditions!!!
I think you'll find most places will either say "NO!" or "No stock!"

    • +2

Well, we are professionals, after all, not just your typical, everyday consumers… what do they expect?
I say leave it up. Eat your heart out, management!

      • Yeah, I'll leave the moral judgement up to the moderators!!!

        • +1

Agreed, that's the only way to get consistently inconsistent decisions around here! :p

    • HN most like told there staff it was one off. they are right one this stuff with email and memo tell staff not to do it.

    • I like doing one off deal for people where I work. I think there cute or a poor student some nice to help some one out or there if nice old people. I time one did 35% off macbook for poor student real want one would have never own one. I as sale staff member get in trouble. It 10% come off my commission but it nice to see some one happy.

      • Then you definitely don't work for or not suitable to work at HN.

  • +4

Hi Guys, just left GG at DFO Essendon, showed the sales rep the copy of the receipt from Snoop (Thanks
Snoop ,My brother and i got one each for $1450!and 3 year warranty $139,picked one up, the other one will
arrive in around a fortnight.Oh and free delivery, hubby has a truck !

    • +2

Sweet! Can you please post a receipt? Maybe other Good Guys will match it!

    • Well done… By the sounds of it most are struggling to get it!!!

    • Great work! Probably the bargain of the year! Awesome TV for the price!

PS. Don't let them send you a BUZZER! Get an exchange if you receive one!

    • Pls post the receipt, I am hoping to get it tomorrow. Thanks in advance

      • trying to post the receipt, so far haven't found a way to do so, does anybody know how i can do that?

        • scan it if you have scanner otherwise took a picture with your phone and upload it to any free image hosting, make sure to hide if you have any sensitive information on the receipt with paint or any other program (ex. photoscape)

    • GG would have lost money on TV but sold more warranty win win. at that point they most like need warranty sales

  • Don't forget this is how Harvey Norman treats it's customers- refer to the Harvey Norman Asus pad debacle here
    http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/89032?page=12
    They don't deserve your business.

    • +1

As much I agree with what you are saying, it's a matter of keeping money in your pocket &/or putting food on your own table!
If people can get a deal they're happy with from other retailers, by all means do it!
But I couldn't justify spending an extra couple of hundred dollars based on the principals or morality of others!
I actually thought people would've had a better chance for a deal at JB!

      • +1

Just saying whatever deal Harvey Norman is offering, try to get it from their competitor first

  • We bought this tv yesterday DELIVERED this morning for $1450. Dont give up…theres still hope!!

  • +1

Im so tempted to try even though I dont need it :P

  • +2

I couldn't get the $1450 from Good Guys but JB Hifi refunded me $150 from when I purchased my set for $1699 a month ago (after showing them the receipt.) Better than a kick in the teeth if you ask me!

Just have to ask, guys! Good luck! :)
