This does not look like a banh mi at all. Although, I'd be curious to try it if they bring it to Brisbane.

It actually doesn't look too bad as a sub but definitely wouldn't call it a Banh Mi.

    • (A banh mi thit is a sub)

Besides the bread (maybe) nothing about this is banh mi….

  • +1

What about this is a banhmi.

    The bread (the worst part)?

Does it have butter? Patté? Pickled carrots? (The best parts that isn't the meat)

    Supercharged Vietnamese

    U ban mi, I ban u.

I understand bro, just like not every males interested in female

      • Probably we have different opinion on what is a beautiful female. As an Asian I know non-Asian see it differently.

It's cheap, it's salty+spicy+sweet+umami, and most importantly, it has a IYKYK factor that makes people feel like they're in a secret club that knows the good shit.

The best banh mi I have had were in Australia. The best bánh mì I had in Vietnam just could not compare.

A great banh mi is available in a variety of fillings, and can be custom made to suit everyone.

Has a great crunchy mouth feel. If you're not partially wearing the crumbs, your banh mi is not fresh enough.

You can smell it from a short distance away, and the flavour linger just a little longer on your tongue.

After the last bite you might fish the bottom of the paper bag for any ingredients that might have fell out.

Just got 2 from Bennetts Green store, they were not made properly so i can't give a proper review, they had almost no slaw on them, one had zero chilli on it, the other had 1 piece, both had no cucumber and very minimal coriander, it did have a slight fish sauce taste, if they were made like the picture, they actually would of been pretty tasty, still good, but classic case of fast food let down by the food not being put together properly

    • sounds like the staff were also confused about making a foreign KFC Zinger banh mi thing.

      • That happens with new products. I recall going to Warners Bay, and waiting 30 minutes for one of their featured products, because, no one knew the instructions to make it.

I'm so glad I didn't have it (I was at Bennetts Green today, as well). I just posted it, for everyones benefit. ;)

    • Authentic banh mi use soya sauce or sweet sauce/gravy made from the grilled meat.

      Never fish sauce.

i like a little nuoc cham on my banh mi, gives it that salty tang

Why is this specific to Newcastle? Does it have a large Vietnamese community?

    • +2

They actually have a decent number of good banh mi joints in Newie. Pho is terrible though.

But it's probably because it's close enough to Sydney for the head office to keep an eye on closely, but far enough to be it's own market. And with a large enough population as well. Also by keeping it to 1 area, they can deny it ever existed if it is terrible.

Newcastle is a Test market. I'd rather have the Nachos, than this.

      • I've read some decent reports.

I like KFC. I like banh mi. Why not combine them?

      • Had the nachos yesterday.

        Very underwhelming.

        • I recall having them last year, and they were good.
Only issue was it took 25 minutes for someone to find how to make it.

          • @BewareOfThe Dog: They must have been better last year as what I was served was slop. Took them 10 minutes to make it too!

    • Fast food companies (and other industries too) often use smaller cities like Newcastle and Wollongong to trial new products and judge market success. They're decently separated from the larger cities and have a demographic makeup similar to that of Australia as a whole.

  • Wait until Uncle Roger reviews this. Some can tag this to his channel?

  • How about Zinger HSP?

    • i think it WAS a thing but very briefly during the height of HSP hysteria some years ago

  • I want the russeats review.
Because they gotta be taking the piss.

I think they call Banh Mi a roll and not a wrap.

  • this is because the Americans lost the Vietnam war isn't it? So they are destroying Vietnamese food

    • +1

Vietnamese food is not cheap these days. A pho used to be $10-$12 is now $18-$20.

      • maybe in you're state lol sounds like your from NSW or VIC where they rip you off on everything. lol

        • Yep the Vietnamese town used to sell $4 pork roll is now $8. It has become the norm in qld. I guess more likely because of the housing market leads to an increase in the rent as well as the labour.

  • +1

As a Vietnamese, this offends me slightly.
I remember when they introduced a breakfast menu and had the best doughnuts (ever). So maybe give it a try.

if they had a viet style ice coffee this might help though.

    • imagine setting this as your expectation for banh mi, then trying a real banh mi

      • honestly have had 'real' banh mi since visiting Vietnam. So my expectations are pretty low.

  • +1

Just had one, better than expected. 60% the size of what it should be, crusty bread. Pickled veggies were MIA. No Pate.

    Solid 5/10, won't buy again.

  • Wrap?

    • I was gonna say.. it's clearly a bread roll not a wrap

  • Did anyone notice that the cheese slice has shrunk?
Got a couple of burgers last week and thought the kitchen forgot to add the cheese slices. When I reported this at the counter, they told me it was there.
Looking closer, I manage to find a paper thin slice of cheese …

    • KFC in it's native USA prioritises low price over quality, and it's led to years of underperformance. Interesting they adopt the same failing strategy here.

  • +1

not a bad idea, maybe a true ozbargainer could look into a DIY option.

Buy a pate mayo roll from your favourite local, buy zinger fillets at 4.95, probably will come out to be $7.5 + veggies (or skip veggies, we dont need that)

That would be a pretty lit meal

  • Russ Eats will review this I am sure

  • +1

Just got another couple of these today from a different store, they still didnt seem to have cucumber on them but overall they were made much better than yesterdays ones, much more slaw and chilli on them, overall, they were pretty tasty

  • lol banh mi my ass but still would try

cheap of kfc to use the name for marketing purposes like this. they'll be confusing all the bogans
