Price Gouging Colesworth

I recently bought about 3L of olive oil, supposedly on special at a major retailer.

Those in the know will be aware that Spain, a major olive oil producer, was in drought a year ago, with corresponding increases in prices logically justified. Since then, there have been floods, etc. Regardless, I attach a photo of oil prices here as of yesterday.

My advice is NOT to buy Colesworth specials. Clearly, the price of olive oil will or should, drop substantially in the year ahead.

Side note: we are buying cooked prawns here for under $20/kg. Excellent quality. Bottom line… never believe what the chains are telling you! Chains are, after all, there to bind you, and hold you back.
Side issue: while Trumpy is imposing tariffs that hurt us, screw him. Stop buying, decrease demand, for us goods. If the world acts against our imperial rulers, we can cause their downfall. You "vote" counts. Don't buy yank.

Someone should really look into this

I hate to break it to you OP, but you might be the last person in Australia to learn that big supermarket chains are scamming us all. Where have you been the past 4 years?

It appears that OP hasnt learnt anything really.

Prices go UP but they rarely come back down.

Fruit and vegetables the exception but even they have become rather stable in price.

With OP's attitude they wont be buying anything from either Coles or Woolworths.

That would leave OP in a very difficult situation

So, I cannot buy Olive Oil sourced from Spain that is sold in Coles or Woolworths, well for at least the next 12 months.
I cannot buy cooked prawns price at more than $20/kg
And above all else I cannot buy any goods sourced from the USA.

And if you do need olive oil, don't buy it when on special.

    Yes

  • A lot of American made isn't made in the USA. I bought an SS Brewtech that claim USA built it cost me a small fortune and arrived with made in China over the box.
I've since upgraded with Chinese built and dropped the hungry American middle man.

    • That’s because the box is made in China….

The forums are bringing out all the nutters this weekend. What is going on?

It's either people in Brisbane who have been shut inside too long or it's people in Melbourne/Adelaide who have had to deal with several days of hot weather in a row (plus a long weekend).

Or the 3 Liberals left in Perth need something else to think about after it being made clear the state is now owned by Labor.

Either that or it's just Sydney being Sydney.

        That makes sense. Cheers

I bought some 23A batteries from Bunnings for $4. The exact same batteries were $8 at Woolworths. Buying full price at Colesworth is almost always more expensive than elsewhere.

I have not been buying 'yank' since Trump 1.0 and with the current unstable administration won't be buying again anytime soon. I have recently been looking to buy stuff from Mexico and Canada but haven't found anything Canadian yet (I don't drink spirits).

Some of their maple syrup is pretty good.

    • Got a great tshirt inn Canada. On the back it says “bring a compass, it is always awkward when you have to eat your friends”.

oh sweet summer child, how naive you really are.

Just because something is on a special doesnt mean its the best price on the market.

You need to have a fair idea of what the best price you've seen something at.

Specials have cycles they come around on a regular basis but not always at the really good price.

Normal price for a item could be $11.50 and when its on a good special it may come all the way down to $5.60 but the next advertised special might be $7.10. So in this case i hold off and buy at $5.60.

Also Coles and Woolworths often alternate with a lot of their specials and you dont often see the same product advertised the same week.
