Because.
Cheap.
…and TLC memory thing which nerds like. Same specs as the Ozbargain fav Lexar NM790.
You need more words: Why Can't You Trust Atoms? They make up everything.

Wow 57 votes. Popular deal at the same price. Must be good.
Bought one to try out. Currently using a Team MP34 4TB, which has been good and reliable (eventhough its components are not top shelf). Hopefully this Z44A7 is just as reliable.
how is it?
Boys,
I need a 4tb drive. Old 2tb is failing and also insufficient. Have one nvme slot on my mobo.
What should I get?
This, NM790, Kingston KC3000? or something else.
Advice needed. Travelling overseas this next week, so need to sort this out beforehand.
NM790 hands down.
thanks g!
nm790 for 341 at amazon, it is then.
NM790 uses the same controller and NAND as this Z44A7 though.
KC3000 uses Phison E18 and Micron 176-layer NAND and DRAM. A different class for more money.
If same price, get KC3000. KC3000 has DRAM, is more consistent across the board, you get firmware updates and the warranty is generally pretty good (for my last Kingston SSD that went @#!@#, MSY offered me a full refund in cash (because they don't have that exact model for replacement in store)). For NM790, the store I got them from, will only give out store credit (but if the store can replace it, it probably will do that first).
The tough question is, how much cheaper does it need to be to make the switch to NM790 really attractive.
NM790 2TB $185
KC3000 2TB $199
NM790 4TB $341
KC3000 4TB $399
What would you pick?
The 2tb price for KC3000 seems reasonable. But for 4tb the price difference is large enough to make KC3000 less appealing.
Edit - price
First, if the 2TB SSD is still under warranty. I would claim the warranty (and if full refund option is available, choose that).
Personally, if I must get a 4TB SSD right now (in your situation), I would pick Team T-Force Z44A7 for $299 (due to price). Z44A7 uses the same controller and NAND flash as NM790. However, I am not sure how much postage you need to pay though.
That said, I bought my NM790 4TB back in 2023 for $255 so I am not comfortable recommending you to buy a 4TB SSD right now. However, for $44 difference, if you really need one now, it is fine to get it (yes NM790 has slightly better specs, but same controller and same type of NAND, same pros and cons).
Got a strange email from them "As part of the payment process, your transaction has been tagged for review by the risk and fraud protection platform’s verification system."
They want another phone number or email, but I don't understand how that verifies the legitimacy of the order.
I will be disappointed if they don't sort this out.
I need a new OS drive, would something like this be suitable or am I better off waiting for a deal on samsung or something?
has the deal expire? showing $349 for me
Expired. NVME drives are still creeping up in price every month. Wait a few weeks for better deals during Easter.
thanks
