    Just use Seagate??

I use both WD and Seagate. Hardly any difference in speed or reliability

      seagate?? No thanks.

      • WD RMA process is worse and cost more than Seagate, if at some point you have to do RMA yourself.

        • I RMA'd a WD MyBook early last year. All i had to do was pay postage back to them and they did the rest. Quite an easy process except it took a while.

        • Last time I have to post WD drive to Malaysia and took around a month to get back. Yes I used normal air mail package, because it's already expensive enough, and if I use express post the cost will higher than buy a new one. With Seagate, you only post to Sydney and hard drive normally come back quicker.

        • How much was it? I guess international postage is not cheap, especially with things as bulky and heavy as 3.5 HDD

        • the place where you by it from is required to handle that for you if you wish.

        • Was $31 or $32? It weighted 1.1kg but the store assistant allow me sent as 1kg registered international parcel.

      • The main difference is the green drive inside. Seagate tends to use the 7200rpm one that is fast on one side, but hotter on another side. It's energy saver feature is not working properly sometime and leave the drive on indefinitely. If you buy it to use as NAS, that kind of issue is very annoying: noisy and waste of energy.

If you use it as an extra computer drive, then, it is no problem and indeed, better than WD

  • This drive comes with SmartWare backup software which Ive been using for 2 years (on other WD's and this exact drive) and its great. True real-time incremental backups. WD regulary update the firmware as well. I much prefer it to windows 7 backups. Worth the extra $20 or so IMO. I don't think the $148 from JB comes with any software at all, I could be wrong. If all you want is the space and don't care about backups, then go the seagate.

The shiny surface on the WD scratches pretty easily too, so you'd best leave it on your desk and not take it anywhere with you.

  • Just be aware that the WD MyBooks uses Hardware Encryption with a controller PCB board. I had real problems with data recovery on a failed 2Tb MyBook, and if this PCB board fails, you're stuck as you can't do normal recovery operations on the bare HDD. Now much prefer a Seagate or an external-enclosure.
