What Streaming Service Do You Currently Use in Australia in 2025?

I am reviewing our Streaming Subscription and it's doing my head in.

I checked the forum here on OzB and rather surprised that this question hasn't been asked yet. So here I am.

PS - I don't trust ChatGPT, or DeepSeek for this topic :-))

Cheers!

  • Mate of ours has one of these Xiaoyun TV-boxes that appears to have everything in it for free. Not sure how or who is hosting the streams, but they've been around for a few years now apparently. Tempting…

    • Ha, donkey years ago we have friends who had one of these, totally free after the one-off purchase cost, less than $200 from memory.
The challenge is that the connection can disconnect suddenly, either slowly or abruptly.
Havent heard much of them now with so much more online streaming platforms.

      • You dont even need to purchase hardware now. There are IPTV services that have pretty much everything (even in 4K) for about 80AUD a year…
How they arent shutdown i dont know, but they seem to work very well.

      • My dad got a yogurt TV box from Malaysia, one off payment but some show loads kinda iffy and can't choose quality. It's probably the same concept as Kodi without a debrid service. I prefer to pay $55 a year for real debrid to use with Stremio

    • Referred to as a "dodgy box" in other parts of the world.

  • +2

Netflix with ads, Prime video. Looking into stremio + real debris again. Need to know if RD is working OK now.

    • +3

Watching Linux ISOs on it right now.

    • +3

Have had Real Debrid for 2 years, didn't even notice when the whole saga happened, maybe it didn't affect Aussies.

    • Netflix with ads never worked for me. it accused me of using a VPN. which i was not using. they never told me what it was checking that made it trigger that. so. i quit Netflix

    • +5

Looking into stremio + real debris again. Need to know if RD is working OK now.

Real debris is trash. Real debrid, on the other hand, works like a charm.

    • +1

RD works fine. Finished Severance this week. Also watching Reacher and Matlock.

  • I thought stremio was illegal

    • Stremio is legal, it’s just a media player.

It’s possible to have it play pirate content however. That may or may not be legal.

  • YouTube family via India
Netflix and Binge with my 3 friends
    Amazon Prime

  • +3

    Netflix + Prime

.. and have on rare occasion shared around a Disney+ with family for one or two things but not so common

As for free stuff, probably goes without saying Youtube with ads also gets a workout, Spotify for music, plus the ABC iView etc

  • +2

    prime
    youtube premium

  • Netflix with ads
    Bloody Kayo
    Scab Disney
    Scab Binge

  • +2

Plex $45 a year for newsdemon
Youtube Premium Family plan Indian Gift card apple trick $7.5 a month
Prime - I only really use prime delivery the rest I kind of waste $79 / Year.

  • +5

    Plex… and an eye patch.

    • +2

the high seas are calling ;)

  • Currently MUBI ($3 for 3 months) and Kanopy.

    • Kanopy is excellent and I wish it was more well known amongst the general population.

      • Yeah surprised it's not well known.

Prime for the delivery, Kayo shared with family member, and Britbox because I'm a sucker for police procedural dramas and the UK does a lot of those.

  • +3

    Plex

  • +5

    ABC iview - free
SBS OnDemand - free with minimal ads
    10play, 9now, 7plus - free with lots of ads

    • +2

Surprising amount of quality content on iview and SBS too.

    • +1

For 10play, 9now, 7plus - free with no ads - try Kodi with Slyguy's addons

  • sflix - free. Use a different DNS if you can't access it ;-)

Amazon Music or Apple Music free trial

  • ATV+, Prime, Netflix and Disney+. Soon Max as well since they’ve entered the Australian market.

  • +1

Streamio, but I missed the recommendation from Netflix…so tempt to get Netflix with ads …

I'm a casual watcher. If a show catches my interest, I will watch everyday. Otherwise I sometimes go on months without watching anything.

  • I have Stan so my parents can use it.
Prime alongside my normal Prime account (not paying for ad removal)

Everything else I've dropped because they either upped their prices constantly and/or cracked down on password sharing or lost content (eg Disney, Netflix, Kayo)

Brave browser and STN on android TV remove the YT ad problem. VPN covers my Aleague needs on YT when it's not on ch10.

  • +3

    PLEX

  • The only 2 subscriptions worth having are YouTube Premium and Amazon Prime.

YouTube Premium is the only streaming service with content I actually want to watch. The other streaming services offer absolute rubbish (if that's your thing).

Amazon Prime comes with Amazon Prime delivery.

  • How are people still getting youtube through India? I thought that was all stopped unless you have an Indian CC with home address.

Anyway youtube ended up losing out on cash as now i use smarttube anyway ,

    I have : -

    Stan
    Netflix
    Prime
    Disney
    Foxtel
    Plex
    IPTV

    • +1

      would also like to know!

    • +1

How are people still getting youtube through India?

Load up Indian Apple ID using gift cards from Amazon India.
Subscribe using an iOS device logged into that account - once it's done you don't need an Apple device again.

      • ah ok, yeah i did see that before, wasnt sure it was still valid. Its cool for me right now with smart tube, shame it doesnt work on phones.

  • +3

Plex + Torrent mostly - Honestly at this point it's less about the $ and more about access and consolidation to one interface. Any time someone wants to watch something from 10+ years ago, I look on Justwatch and find that no services have it and you can only rent or buy (still renting really).

Only current service I have is Dropout which I'm happy to support, highly recommend if that sort of sketch comedy is up your alley. Some genuinely talented people over there.

Youtube I used to have, and I hate the ads, but can't bring myself to pay full price since the VPN system got killed.

Apple TV+ I think has some incredible quality shows, but it is hit and miss as to whether they're for me, and there's not a lot of total content (Quality over quantity)

The rest of them are largely drivel, or the good stuff is so buried and scattered between services that I couldn't justify paying for any one of them these days (see Plex).

  • Prime (on due to delivery, otherwise would dump it like a hot turd)
    Netflix intermittently
Disney whenever I have a free offer like CBA yello 6 months free
BBC, paramount+ etc when prime has the sales where they are $2 a month for 2 months.

    4k Video Downloader+

  • Our Samsung TV comes with some nuilt-in Channels but its clunky. Does anyone know how to use it effectively?
    Does Google TV has similar?

  • Thanks for asking. Plex and optus sport.

    Real-Debrid

  • P L E X ⁉️

  • +2

    ABCiview, SBS-OneDemand, 9Now, 7Plus, 10Play.

there's a shedload of stuff on all of those.

    • shedload of ads too?

      • No commercials on the ABC (iView)

        • and the others…….

  • +5

    Stremio

  • I have:
    Netflix
    Prime (mostly for deliveries)
Youtube premium (Shared with 5 other "family" members)

I recently cancelled Stan, not worth it really for only a handful of good shows.

  • +4

    Nothing

  • Full Foxtel 4k for $20 a month ( if you know you know)
and Plex ( If you know you know )

    • +2

If you have a good Plex, then you don't need 'Full Foxtel'

      If you know you know.

      • -3

the hardest and least effective way to get live tv.

        • -1

          ok boomer ;)

          • @bohn: How would you go about it then? I've been using addons in Kodi for live sport, but the connections can be hit or miss and it's definitely not more convenient than Kayo and from what I've seen IPTV kinda sucks in Plex.

    • wow foxtel for $20

    • Could you expand on Plex setup?

      • all talk no action. on the other hand, i would happily advise on how to get full foxtel 4k (box) for $20 a month

  • Why is it doing your head in OP? What exactly is your problem?

Also, the news has been a source of great entertainment since January if you hadn't noticed, who needs fictional drama and action when there's live shit every day.

    • Seaaon 3 of the Apprentice: President is the best one yet. If they make a Season 4 it will be wild

I use the following (and I've been too lazy to get through another country etc as don't like disconnections but if there's a way I'll look into it):

    1. Netflix - for tv/movies
    2. Stan - for rugby & tv/movies
    3. Amazon Prime - for tv/movies
    4. Disney - for kids tv/movies
    5. Apple+ - only got for "Foundation"… and retained even though its crap
    6. Foxtel (basic) - had for years
    7. Shudder - horror aficionado
    8. UFC Fightpass - for general UFC/MMA content
  • youtube premium via Pakistan
    Netflix via India
    Plex pass via Turkey
    Amazon via Australia (mostly deliveries)

  • Prime - Bonus is the Amazon Deliveries
    Netflix
Foxtel (if you classify that as streaming)
    Disney Plus
    Hayu (via Prime)

As much as Plex and a NAS would be nice, I honestly cannot be bothered with the downloading of it all, and you watch it once…… how often do you rewatch stuff?

HBO Max is coming in at the end of the month, so will be interesting to see what is available for that.

    • As much as Plex and a NAS would be nice, I honestly cannot be bothered with the downloading of it all, and you watch it once…… how often do you rewatch stuff?

      So delete it afterwards?
      That's what I do.
If I want to re-watch, I may not delete, but that is quite rare. If I want it again in the future, I will get it again. I have Fibre 1000/50 so not a problem for me.

Also, re 'cannot be bothered downloading all of it' - it can be automated quite easily.

      • I have Fibre 1000/50 so not a problem for me.

I've got 400/400 which is fine and faster enough. Downloading bandwidth isn't a problem for me.

Also, re 'cannot be bothered downloading all of it' - it can be automated quite easily.

Really? My understanding (although haven't looked into it a lot) is that you need to download it and then add it to the NAS? You can automate the download part? Is it relatively quick for new releases compared to a streaming service?

Yeah, it's very quick for new releases compared to streaming services.

And yes, you need to download and add to the NAS if you want to watch it. But as soon as you have seen it, there is nothing stopping you from deleting it. You don't even need a large NAS if you want to run it like that. In fact, you don't even need a dedicated NAS!

Some people have a hobby out of collecting tv shows and films, and like to have a massive NAS with a huge amount of HDDs - but that's up to them. I delete my tv shows and films after watching (for the most part).

          • @bohn: I might have to look into this further, I am wanting to get a NAS at some point when there is a good deal.

            • +1

@geekcohen: FYI the automation can be done with containers like: Sonarr, Radarr, Prowlarr & nzbget. That should be a good starting point if you want to look into it anyway!

  • Youtube Premium. Haven't seen a Youtube ad for years and I don't intend to now. All through the great country of India.

Amazon Prime. I use this mainly for the shipping because I get all the media from….

Stremio + Realdebrid for the rest.

  • AppleTV+ (as part of Apple One)
    Netflix (mostly for my son)
Kayo (split with some friends, for me solely to watch F1)
and giving Docplay a whirl for a month.

  • Netflix (ads) $8 - Amz Prime $x - Spotify $24 - Kayo $25 (inc Binge 6mth)
    + Plex for the rest

  • Hulu
    Peacock
    Netflix (included with Foxtel)
    Disney+ (kids want it)
Amazon (pays for itself with free delivery)
    Paramount+
    MLB TV
    NBA League Pass
    Pluto (US Version Free)
and Foxtel but will cancel unless i get a further reduced price when max comes in
also sometimes have Apple TV+ but usually its with a free trial

  • Stremio and google to search what to watch on Stremio :-)

  • im surprised there's quite a lot paying for streaming services, i guess the convenience is just way too good to pass up

  • Netflix and Viki (Asian drama)

  • Stremio (with RD and TB), Prime (for free delivery), Youtube (turkey iOS), Crunchyroll (turkey iOS).

  • I use the following on Android TV devices:

Stemio + RD - movies and TV shows
    SmartTube - YT no ads
Kodi for Aussie network streaming without ads (10, 9, 7, sbs) and way, way more
Ace Stream Live TV - live sports

  • +2

    Streamio + Torrentio

  • Amazon prime
    YouTube (ad blocker on FF)
    Netflix
    Disney

I can't win this battle as I'm living with 3 kids under 10 and wifey.

  • Prime via AUD
    YT Premium via PKR
    Crunchy Roll via BDT
    Netflix with ads AUD

  • Netflix borrowed, foxtel and Spotify family (not that the former works at all) and prime because shipping but that ends next month. I use public sources far more and help others setup the simple solution of qbit + search plugins

  • Prime/kayo/spotify

  • At this stage really only LemoTV and mostly just for the live sport (which it does ok not very reliably)

I am looking around if anyone has any suggestions for something that does football/soccer reliably

  • We unsubbed from all streaming services a couple of years ago, but now my wife is back on Netflix, hardly watching it though. I also have Prime videos as part of the Amazon sub but I don't use it.

  • Netflix - $3.5 per month via nigeria
Youtube premium - $3.5 per month via India apple account

    Total $7

    • I thought Netflix already closed the Nigeria loophole.

      • not for me. i think it was closed when it was ozbargained. i signed up a few months after the ozbargaining and it's still working now.

  • -1

    I use spotify

For sports I use free streaming sites. Use a good adblocker and the interface is fine and the quality is not much worse than Kayo, for 0% of the price

For movies I borrow a friend's Netflix or I download.

I'm not going to pay for content unless it's priced and delivered well - hence I pay only for Spotify.
