Running Power for Home Assistant Wall Tablet

I recently had my gas heater removed from the roof, there is a powerpoint on the joist in the roof,
In place of the old wall controller, I want to run a USB cable (with extension) from the powerpoint in the roof down to this and plug in a flush wall mounted tablet

So there will be a USB 5V wall plug (like iPhone charger) in the roof and perhaps 5metre USB cable down the internal wall to the tablet
Is this legal/safe/not gonna burn my house down?

Thanks

  • I’m more interested in knowing about your tablet. Care to share?

Haven't even looked at a tablet yet, but if you mean in general then it is called Home Assistant

Currently I have my 6 split systems, solar panels, house consumption, hot water system, electric car, some blinds, room temperature sensors, garage door opener integrated
Still intend to get house speakers, security cameras and perhaps lights set up in the future

So instead of having to use my remotes for AC i can turn any of them on from anywhere instantly, I can see their current status etc. Everything can be automated so I can automate car to charge if solar is generating excess power instead of sending it to the grid for 3.3c/kWh, turn AC on if room temp sensor exceeds a certain temperature , or at a certain time of day, or if i'm on the way home, or if the solar is exporting

Could set an automation that when I leave work the AC turns on, lights turn on, garage door opens. Or set a movie mode so when you switch that on the lights dim, TV turns on, blinds go down, whatever you want

      Example Here

Do your windows open and close automatically when you want the AC on?

        • If you want them to but do you normally leave your windows open when you aren't home? If so what days do you work?

          • @Brick50: I’ve got crimsafe so yes, yes I do.

            • @Downvoter: I have it on my back door as well, however I don't leave it open when its going to be 30+ outside when I would run my A/C. Perhaps you have evaporative cooling which would make sense to leave a window or door open

But hey if my solar is generating enough I can leave my windows open and run the A/C, maybe that will help slow down global warming.

      • I like that I can turn my sprinklers on when the dryer stops. Or if my cameras detect motion it can turn on a smart switch to charge my Ryobi batteries. The possibilities are endless with HA!

How do you capture your houses power consumption?

        • How do you capture your houses power consumption?

If in Vic, free Powerpal + Bluetooth receiver on HA

          • @jjjaar: Interesting! I have all these things. I'll check it out tonight.

          • @jjjaar: How do I get the powerpal to connect to the bluetooth reciever?

            • +1

@stuffandthat: I don't think you can, as I looked into it and couldn't get it to work. Would love it to though!

My solar inverter has a consumption monitor in the switchboard so it measures panel generation, house consumption and how much is being exported so I use this data

              • @Brick50: I never had a Bluetooth receiver on HA (I went Green and just never got around to it), but always saw people on forums saying they had it working. Good to know I didn’t rush to sort out a receiver!

And yes, same, we have it running through our solar meter. It’s rather addictive. Just picked up some IKEA inspelning smart plugs too before they stopped being available! Wish I’d bought more.

                • @jjjaar: I think maybe the Powerpal Pro was compatible but not the basic one that was free under the vic scheme

  • I don't know the source but I'm sure I recall it's illegal to run any powered cable behind a wall that wasn't installed by an electrician.

IMHO I think if you run it through some conduit you should be sweet.

I agree I was thinking of using conduit, some fast charge phone cables get very hot I have noticed

Funny thing is according to aus electrical standards if a cable is put in a conduit its max amperage is lowered compared to if it is bare in the ceiling, but I think a conduit would reduce any heat damage if it happened

      • If you just use a 5V 2A charger you won't have to worry about fast charging.

        • Yep, the other alternative i considered was POE to USB C Adapter at the tablet and then a POE splitter/power supppy in the roof space so technically it’s just Ethernet/security camera wiring in the wall

          • @Brick50: That would be better as you won't have to worry about the voltage drop in the long cable run.

  • I was going to put in a wall tablet but I've now opted for a Shelly screen. They're doing two sizes and work really well with HA.

  • I'd run POE and get a POE tablet, they are fairly cheap on Aliexpress

    • Could I get POE tablet (with wifi), ethernet cable run from tablet up into roof and then connect this to the powerpoint in the roof and hook the ethernet cable to the end? https://www.centrecom.com.au/tp-link-tl-poe160s-poe-injector

Unfortunately ethernet back to router is not an option where it will be for now due to FTTP upgrade in future
