How Long Do I Need to Be with Another Carrier to Get The JB Hi-Fi Credit?

I've seen this plenty before, but all my searches bring up old answers and varying numbers.

I'm currently on a JB plan but want to port away and then port back in to get the sign-up credit. How long do they currently need you to be gone before you're considered a "new customer" and eligible for the credit? Is it 30 days, 90 days, 365 days?

  • Been a while but when I did it last it was 30 days.
It was the worst 30 days with Optus ever.

    • Next time switch to Aldi. It’s on the Telstra network and it’s not excluded (well wasn’t last I checked)

      • That was always the plan - thought I’d just trial Belong for 3 months… 3 years later still with belong lol

          That's where you belong.

        • I thought you switched back to the jb plan. Or do they offer jb credit gift card on belong as well?

I was doing these deals for years but decided to buy outright and go with boost (full telstra) yearly plan. Works out cheaper

          • @snapper17: Nah I been through the jb telstra process twice, both times swapping to Optus for 30 days, then the last time I thought I’d try belong as I had a very discounted starter kit turned out very good value and maybe slightly better if not same value than paying for the jb plan.

    • Thanks. How long is a while too?

you don't need to port out at all, you just buy a cheap sim from another provider($5 from aldi), port that number in, then cancel it after you get your giftcard, better off waiting till it goes to $1200 though

    • So what's all this about a $1200 gift card? How do I get in on the action and how much will it cost me?

      • it cost between $765 & $850 but you have to wait until JB have the $1200 bonus, you will have to wait for one of these https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/885630

        • Ah thanks. Yeah not worth it for me. Min cost $2136 minus $1200 gift card = $936 over 24 months = $39/mo = more expensive than what I'm doing now.

Edit. unless theres some way to game it to reduce that toal cost?

@tenpercent: You cancel it straight away, i have done it, many others have aswell, the amount i paid was $765 for the $1200 voucher

            • @Qazxswec: Thanks. I'll sub to JB Hi fi mobile and wait for a good deal to pop up then.

    • How does that work? They have this in their Ts & Cs now.

      Voucher Repayment Fee
6.2 If you received a JB Hi-Fi Voucher when you purchased your Mobile Service and you cancel
that Mobile Service within any applicable Voucher Term, you must pay us the outstanding
amounts for the JB Hi-Fi Voucher you received for the cancelled Mobile Service (the Voucher
      Repayment Fee).

The Voucher Repayment Fee is a pro-rata amount, equal to the total amount of the base
Voucher divided by 24 and multiplied by the months (or part months) remaining in your
Voucher Term. For example, if received a voucher with a 24-month Voucher Term, then in:
      (a) Month 1: You will need to repay 23/24 of the Voucher you received;
      (b) Month 12: You will need to repay 11/24 of the Voucher you received; and
      (c) Month 23: You will need to repay 1/24 of the Voucher you received.

      • They use the word "and" between (b) and (c). So if you cancel in month 1 then it adds up to 1.45 times the value of the Voucher…
Or do you only pay once depending on how many months into the 24 months?

They use a semicolon to denote that there is a further example. You only pay once depending on how long is left.

      • Check the critical information summary, the maximum voucher payment is $800, they may have finally closed this loophole, im not sure, but i can tell you, i have personally done this, paid $765 all up, many others have done it too

        • Oh I believe that it's been used before, I just get the feeling they've closed the loophole. I guess I'll wait and see.

Do you know if there's a time of year (besides Christmas) that they usually do the $1200 voucher?

          • @Tacooo: Maybe eofy sale, not sure about that though, i think they do it on black friday aswell

  • In my experience, you just need to find staff who doesn't asks(or care). I think once they search you on their system they'll know if you've been out of telstra for 30days or not, however lots of the staff don't care. If you get rejected, just try again at another store. Buy a cheap sim to port out.

  • IIRC, it’s one full bill cycle

  • Is it possible to sign up for a new plan, get the credit and new phone, then transfer my existing Telstra postpaid number to the new contract?
