Thorn Titanium 39mm Automatic Dive Watch - Sapphire, PT5000 US$164 (~A$260) Delivered @ Thorn Watch Store

100
FS5

Definitely an homage to the Tudor Pelagos, but at this price point it's a worthwhile alternative to road-test whether you'd like save up for the Real Deal or not. Comes in three colourways with blue dial & bezel and black dial & bezel, both featuring white markers with BGW9 lume, and a black dial & bezel with 'fauxtina' coloured markers with C3 lume. Titanium case (likely grade 2) and bracelet means it will be light on the wrist, and the bracelet has a toolless quick removal system for links.

Thorn are having an anniversary sale till the end of March, and with the coupon code FS5 you'll get free shipping (a whopping US$5 off!) worldwide. If you can be bothered, you may be able to find this same watch on Ali Express moderately cheaper, item quantities prevented me from posting those as deals, though. Still, with only $20-$30 difference I think I'd prefer to go direct to the manufacturer's web site.

Buy one to wear as an attractive beater. The PT5000 movement is an ETA 2824-2 clone that has a surprisingly strong following. I wouldn't expect COSC performance, but it doesn't seem to be any worse than the SII NH35 or Miyota 8xxx movements you commonly see in homage watches. With 200m WR you might even be able to get it wet, and the 20mm lug width means you'll have endless strap options should the fancy strike you.

No, the BB doesn’t have crown guards whereas the Pelagos does. If you want a BB homage then Thorn has you covered there, too.

Plus GST at Ali, so direct from the "factory" is probably the way to go.

An homage to Pelagos that is an homage to Submariner

  • I was looking at the Octopus Kraken version of the 39mm for a long while and didn't think the reviews of the PT5000 looked very good at the time. (Originally they had a Sellita) Fair few stopped running after a few months.
This is a lot cheaper though, so?
Still not "throw away money" for me.

A lot of watch for the money, and 12.1 mm is really nice. But personally, I can't get over the polished bezel insert. Subjectively, it just doesn't look right. Also, I prefer an NH3X movement since I can easily swap it out if required and these days even NH3X watches can be thin. Thorn makes decent watches, but I believe the Ixdao, San Martin and Octopus Kraken are better reviewed.

The bronze FFF catches my eye along with the Desert (for sentimental reasons). I own the Hruodland Retro Sharkmaster 300 Automatic Watch F025 which is also on sale and excellent watch, but it can be found cheaper on sale on Aliexpress.

Case finishing on their own photos is horrendous: https://www.thornwatches.com/cdn/shop/files/20231114_144325_… - look at the area near crown guard and lugs

    • Also I just noticed that it says titanium - this glare doesn’t look like titanium at all. Probably just a marketing team that doesn’t care about marketing.

      • It is indeed Ti, but you can't always rely on studio shots. That's where YT can really help. Ti is challenging to polish or brush and that can also depend on the grade.

    Quality looks terrible.

You'd be way better off spending the extra $100 and getting the titanium San Martin homage.

Are you referring to the SN-0111? If so, it’s out of stock at the moment. Plus, it only features sword or Mercedes hands so it’s more of a Submariner homage.

      • +2

No - referring to the SN0121T. Comes in blue, black or green. The blue and black colours are excellent.

Have one myself and would totally vouch for the quality. On par with my $400-800 Sieko/Citizens.

        • Ah, no, I hadn't seen that one because it's strangely missing from the San Martin Official store. Yes, they look pretty good and I know that San Martin has a reputation of excellent quality so would definitely be worth a look-in.

  • "Homage"? That's a slavish copy.
