Dell Requesting Personal Information

Hi all, I bought a laptop from the Dell outlet on Thursday and last night I got an email from Dell requesting my full name (including middle name) and date of birth.

They claim it's for trade compliance, but wouldn't the laptop be here in Australia? They've already got my first and last name and residential address. I don't feel comfortable emailing these details back just to buy a product.

Has anyone else had this before?

    1. Ask them if it is absolutely necessary to give them those details and if they will not proceed with the sale if you decline. If they say it is necessary, then go on to step 2.
    2. Give them fake middle name and date of birth.
    3. Save the email for future reference in case you need to quote the middle name and DOB to them.

  • Maybe they also want to see ID like Telstra does when they deliver your stuff.

  • Loads of people don’t have middle names. What do they do?

You could be one of them..? 😉

Wouldn’t surprise me if middle names (companies asking for them) are gone in a few years. I for one am offended when asked for a middle name that I do not have.

    • Everyone here has a middle name : bargain

  • If you already have the laptop then I’m not sure what they can do if you refuse to send them back the information Maybe ask a few more questions about why they need this information and say you aren’t comfortable due to the risk of identity theft.
    .

    • It hasn't shipped. The delay is me providing the info. I raised this in the reply to them so we'll so how I go. My old laptop is starting to fail so I'm getting desperate and asked they refund the $1300 currently sitting on my debit card if they aren't going to ship it.

  • They probably need nice new fresh data after they somehow let 49 million customer records be accessed early last year.
    Customer data

At least the most recent incident in September last year 'only' appears to be employee data.

    BTW - they state that

You have the right to know about the personal information we have collected about you and why we collected it.

  • Sounds somewhat odd that they need these details for a regular sale.

Is it perhaps to do with finance or warranty registration?

Perhaps it's to do with customs declaration if the computer is coming from overseas.

Call them and query why they actually need these details for a sale.

If you are not comfortable with it, the. Cancel the order and select a different manufacturer. I've purchased from Lenovo and HP in the past 18 months and they don't ask for this information.

  • Just an update on this one. The first order was cancelled. I placed a second order for the same thing and it went straight through and was delivered. Weird.
